Harness the wind! Meet Kaku Dako:
Kaku Dako (pronounced ka-koo-dah-koh) is a DIY paper and bamboo kite kit that teaches you how to put it together.
Inspired by traditional Japanese kites, we've created a version that's easy to assemble and practically flies itself. Ours comes in three colors – peach, mint, and black and white, with different geometric patterns on the front.
There are effortless instructions printed on the backside of the kite, and assembly is easy with mess-free peel and stick glue strips.
This kite soars with ease, and once you’re ready to put it away for the day, simply tuck it back inside its reusable cardboard briefcase for safekeeping. In this packaging, the kite handle is the handle.
Kites were invented way back in 2600 B.C. in China, long before the start of written history. Over the years they've been used in different ways, including communication and measuring tools. The style we studied in particular, Kaku Dako, hails historically from Tokyo. This name loosely translates from Japanese to English as "Angled Kite", referring to the rectangular sides of the body.
Today, they are an excellent way to clear your head and enjoy the outdoors, and truly an activity that's fun for all ages. Kites are something that can be fun for everyone, and are a great way to bring people together.
About Us & Manufacturing Methods:
We are a two-person product design studio in Detroit that specializes in toys and gifts. With every new product we dream up, we strive to produce it as locally as possible. By doing this, we get to establish personal relationships with the vendors we work with and collaborate with them on projects together. This kite kit is no different – the only piece we were unable to have manufactured in the US is the handle and string. All other parts are sourced from Michigan and California.
Our ultimate goal in this endeavor is to create a beautiful kite that flies great and offer it at an accessible price point.
Risks and challenges
So far, so good! We have created the first version of this kite kit and established which vendors we'll be working with to supply all the needed parts. This kit contains a paper kite, tails, cut-to-size bamboo, sticker reinforcements, a pre-wrapped handle, and an elastic bowline for extra stability.
Each Kaku Dako kite kit creates a 12.5 x 19 inch kite with 38 inch long tails. No additional materials are necessary, not even scissors or glue. This way, it's the easiest possible way to get a kite in the air.
With your help, we can create the first production run of this kite kit.
We're so excited to make this a reality! Help us make it happen : )
