Austin, Texas, is widely known as the "Live Music Capitol of the World," however, few are aware of the vibrant, bustling early jazz and swing music and dance community that has flourished here for years and continues to grow. In 2010, a group of swing dancers interested especially in the earlier, fast-paced, "hot rhythm" dances such as balboa, "collegiate" shag, and charleston, decided to create a workshop weekend and festival called the "Hot Rhythm Holiday." At this event, attendees study with world-class dance instructors, enjoy social dancing to brilliant live jazz musicians, participate in dance competitions, and experience an aesthetic atmosphere in which the jazz and dance born in the early 20th century continues to be played and appreciated with the same passion and fire as those who originally created it. The heart and dedication this close-knit community brings to the event has served to make HRH 2010 and 2011 unforgettable. This success has inspired its creators to form the Hot Rhythm Foundation and to add even more wonderful dimensions to HRH 2012.
Hot Rhythm Holiday 2012
This year's Hot Rhythm Holiday takes place September 13th - 16th, 2012, at the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs in Austin, TX. The event will feature daytime classes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and it includes four nights of social dancing—with live jazz, dance competitions, special performances, and jam sessions on Friday and Saturday night.
For the third year in a row the HRH will be welcoming the East Side Dandies to the stage for Friday night. This will be followed by the world-famous Jim Cullum Jazz Band on Saturday evening. The festivities will continue late into the night with after-hours dancing and jam sessions open to students and instructors.
Weekend pass holders may take dance classes from internationally renowned instructors covering all levels of balboa, charleston, and collegiate shag. There is a place for both students interested in learning a dance for the first time and advanced dancers looking for new inspiration. Music master classes will be taught by Austin's finest jazz musicians and will consist of two-hour classes for clarinet, trumpet/cornet, trombone, string bass, rhythm guitar, drums, fiddle, and piano.
