We're tired because we've just finished our the 4th annual International Film Festival. It's been a 7 month slog of hard work, late nights, budget, sweat and tears. But it's all worth it when we step back and look at the result. 2013 was our best festival ever.
And yet it might also have been our last festival ever. We'd like your help to make sure it isn't.
We want you fund us so that we can ensure CineFringe returns for 2014 (and beyond) to continue the film revolution at the world's largest arts gathering. You'll also be ensuring the festival stays indie-friendly and FREE TO ENTER!
CineFringe is the film festival of the Edinburgh Fringe. We show high quality screenings of independent short films entered into our festival for free from all over the world. 2013 is our 4th year and this year we received nearly 500 entries from 45 separate countries, making us the biggest film event at what is the largest arts festival on the entire planet!
We are madly in love with independent film but, despite it's size, the Edinburgh Fringe and surrounding festivals are sorely lacking film events. It's easily the most unrepresented art form at the month long August festival.
John, our director, started CineFringe out of love for the Edinburgh Fringe and frustration when in 2009 there was no event at which to screen his short about the festival, Knock Knock. Instead of hiring out a whole Fringe venue for a 6 minute film, he decided to return having gathered other short films together in a film festival programmed specifically for the Fringe.
He invited anyone with a short film of any genre to enter the festival for free via a simple application process, eschewing budgetary considerations for sparks of filmmaking talent. About 35 films were entered that first year and in August 2010 CineFringe was born, run and funded by small group of volunteers.
Since then the festival has grown in popularity and size every year. The quality and sheer numbers of entries have rocketed! The problem is that the festival is still run and funded by that same small group of exhausted and penniless volunteers!
Unfortunately running a film festival costs money. Some of the main costs we incur every year include:
- Fringe Registration Fee
- Venue Hire for 10 days of screenings
- Equipment hire - projectors / screens / drapes
- Running costs for website, online application process
- Marketing costs - programmes / flyers / advertising
It all adds up. We work EXTREMELY hard to keep costs to a
minimum and have managed to pull in some EPIC favours, especially with
regards to equipment hire, in order to make the festival happen each
The only way CineFringe currently recoups any of those costs is through ticket sales. Though increasing, these are not enough to cover all the other overheads. The deficit ends up coming out of our pockets every year. As the festival grows the cost for us unfortunately grows too.
This is the point where most other festivals would get around this obstacle by charging filmmakers an entry fee to cover overheads.
BUT THAT'S NOT HOW WE WANT TO RUN CINEFRINGE!
If we charged for entry we could have already matched the total we are aiming for this year alone, but then we would have been shutting the door to those who do not have the budget to pay just to submit to festivals. Had we done that, we wouldn't not have uncovered some of the amazing films that we have showcased in the last 4 years!
We are a film festival set up by filmmakers, for filmmakers. For a film festival to truly act in the interest of all independent filmmakers, surely it cannot charge entrants up front without any guarantee of their film getting shown?
So we're not doing that.
Instead we are hoping some of the filmmakers who made our first 4 years so special (and our more recent followers) will donate just this once, as a sort of 'thank you' to us for continuing to keep CineFringe indie-friendly and free to enter.
Your money will provide funds for the festival for several years to come so we can focus on increasing our team and doing what we do best, running the festival free of charge to our applicants.
But you'll also be providing us with an extra contingency so that we can invest in the growing festival and help it not only survive but grow and start sustaining itself. Your money will also go towards:
- Making our borrowed equipment our own so that we can put on regular events outside of the festival to raise money and the festival's profile.
- Allow us to draft in extra help where needed to fully deal with the extra numbers of entries we receive year on year.
- Help us invest in improved marketing - expanding the festival's reach and audience.
- Allow us to organise further events and collaborations at the Fringe to help put film at the centre of the Edinburgh Festivities.
Filmmakers LOVE being part of our festival because we appreciate the effort that goes into making a film whether on a budget of tens of thousands or under a hundred pounds and we treat both types as one and the same.
Filmmakers LOVE that we are committed to making it as easy as possible for anyone with a film to enter and that we don't charge them. They love how we take a fresh approach to film festivals, allowing them to apply with films hosted online.
Audience members LOVE that we offer a truly unique experience at the Fringe, an event that in any one year might offer more separate productions of Macbeth than film events!
Finally, filmmakers, audiences and critics alike all LOVE the high quality of our screenings!
Risks and challenges
We have successfully organised and run the film festival for 4 years running. We've managed to do so far (at personal cost) without outside funding. We know the running costs of the festival and our total is designed to sustain the festival for several years.
The Edinburgh Fringe is a huge yearly event with a well established structure for providing venues for thousands of events, so we are confident the festival will find a home in the event that our current venue is unavailable.
There's always the chance that no-one will enter the festival. We hope that won't happen, but if it does we will still work hard to seek out fantastic independent films to screen at the festival!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
