About this project
UPDATE #3: We're pleased to announce that you can now grab the Reobirth: Magic's Awakening Battle Minigame demo right here! Please read the included readme text file for additional information about this battle minigame demo!
Reobirth: Magic's Awakening is a fast-paced 2D action RPG currently being developed for PC (with possible Mac and Linux ports through the stretch goals!). Drawing inspiration from some of the most memorable and classic ARPG's (Secret of Mana, Castlevania, Super Metroid), Reobirth combines world exploration, elemental magic, and intense battling into an exciting and challenging adventure that spans the lands!
When Reo, a powerful and devastating form of elemental magic, is unleashed across the greatest expands of the universe, sinister monsters of dark magic begin growing all throughout the galaxy. On earth, humanity is forced to seek refuge by escaping to the Hove, a large man-made airship that valiantly hovers high above the clouds. The privileged and high ranking civilians retreat to the Hove under command of the questionable Emperor Vioz, while the commoners are left on earth to fend for themselves against the growing masses of dark monsters. Two hundred years upon the Hove and the once mighty airship now slowly grazes through the air, desperately seeking restorations: damaged, quickly losing altitude, and seemingly mere moments away from plummeting back down to earth for the Emperor and all passengers to meet their untimely fate: death by Dark Magic monsters.
But in a moment, a mysterious young boy with aquatic blue hair is seen standing motionless on the deck, mysteriously blending with the darkness of the night. No name, no origin - stricken with an eerily uncanny silence and a deadpan expression drawn across his pale face.
"Who is this young boy that has slipped aboard?" the passengers whisper, completely perplexed. "There is no entrance to an airship that hovers hundreds of miles in the air!"
And this Reo - such a relentless and destructive force - how did that come to be?
Our adventure begins...
Reobirth is a project that I've dreamed of since childhood - a fun, lively fast paced action fighter mixed with a keen balance of RPG and real-time strategy elements. Reobirth draws inspiration from a variety of classic role playing and action games!
Reobirth can mainly be classified as an intense battling/action game weaved together with RPG elements and world exploration. The overworld map is used to traverse between different interconnected regions, and each region contains multiple Dark Magic obelisks that must be obliterated. Outside of the battle missions, you'll be able to explore the overworld and discover new areas, puzzles, and monsters (and a few secrets too!).
- Travel across the lands solving puzzles and exploring new regions
- Fast-paced, intense battling against an impressive array of devious foes
- Follow an engaging storyline about the truth of the Hove, the fate of the planet, and the origins of magic as you encounter unique characters and ferocious monsters!
- Animation created from an exclusive animation engine that allows for procedurally generated and dynamic 2D animations
- Create your very own monsters and gear and import them directly into Reobirth, using the included Keprus Motion animation editor. Share your creations with friends!
- Unleash over 40 powerful spells, ranging from heavy crushing ice storms and sinister dark magic to powerful attack boosters!
- With the skill upgrade system, your fighter can learn a variety of moves to bring to battle, such as the comet pound and the fire dash.
- A mixture of RPG elements and intense real time battling. Earn XP and level up, increase your stats, and train your way to victory.
- Bring two Pons into battle with you - tiny creatures that feed and grow from pure magic. Some Pons are masters of elemental magic, summoning a treacherous fire storm or flooding the arena with poisonous liquids, while others hang back and play defense, temporarily boosting your stats and replenishing HP when you're near death.
$15,000 - Mac/OSX port! This will allow me to purchase a Mac and any additional software for releasing a Mac port of Reobirth!
$20,000 - 15 new spells! Conjuring up 40 balanced spells running the gamut of all elements was a bit tricky, but once I got started, the ideas wouldn't stop! Reaching this stretch goal will allow me to add additional spells. Each spell requires planning, programming, artwork, and designing any particle effects.
$35,000 - There's a new game mode I've been considering, and I would absolutely love to see it come to life! Reaching this stretch goal will allow me find and work with an additional team member to help develop this new mode.
As the Kickstarter progresses and I have a better understanding of the interest and community feedback, I will create additional stretch goals. Stretch goals are a brilliant idea and serve as a fun and motivating approach to getting everyone involved, so I'd love to focus on additional stretch goals that are realistic, within the scope of the project, and won't cause any delays!
Great, another ARPG. So, what makes this any different?
I'm a huge fan of ARPG's - there's an enormous amount of depth traveling across a large overworld, exploring all the regions and discovering new items and battling dangerous monsters, all the while leveling up and becoming a mighty warrior. With Reobirth, I intend to take the best elements of ARPG's and expand on them to hopefully build a fun and intense ARPG for everyone to enjoy!
First, we have our rather unusual cast of foes:
Dark Magic Monsters
I'm finding that one of the most rewarding and liberating tasks of artwork development for Reobirth is the character design. It's one of those rare moments when you can simply toss conventions and earthly logic out of the window and let your ideas flow like crazy, sketching up some of the most unusual, offensive, unique, or just plain bizarre monsters!
Reobirth will explore a variety of different creatures with numerous elemental backgrounds - from viciously gigantic spiders engulfed in flames to water skeletons to electric unicorns with with the ability to summon miniature clones. Some enemies will be right at eye level with our hero, while other large, beastly creatures will dominate the screen.
Reobirth employs a partner system built on tiny, powerful creatures that are a literal physical embodiment of pure magic. In this universe, these Pon serve as the only link between life and magic. You can partner up with two Pon at a time as your explore the world, but you can breed and house up to 99.
Some Pon are masters of elemental magic, summoning a treacherous fire storm or flooding the arena with poisonous liquids, while others hang back and play defense, temporarily boosting your stats and replenishing HP when you're near death. Choosing the right Pon to exploit the enemy's elemental weakness and give you the upper hand is the key to successful battling.
Discovering special areas or completing certain missions might lead you to finding some rare Pon, but Pon can also be bred through a unique breeding system by collecting Reo and mating a male and a female Pon. Mixing and matching and discovering what magical powers your Pon will be born with is part of the challenge!
Another element that I was extremely adamant about during the design phase is the ability to equip your character with a variety of weapons, armor, and gear, and have them visually appear on your character's avatar.
Create your own Characters
For Reobirth, I needed a skeletal based animation tool that offered the power of realtime inverse kinematics, physics, and user defined animations. What's all that jargon mean? I wanted smooth, flowing 2D animations! So I set out and spent eight months developing the animation engine used exclusively in Reobirth.
But to share the fruits of my labor, I'm distributing this tool freely with Reobirth so you guys can create your own monsters! KEPRUS Motion (tentative title) is designed to be quick and easy so anyone can jump right in and start building characters and animating them right away. Use any piece of 2D artwork - a drawing, a scanned character, or even a photo of yourself or friends! I have plans to incorporate KEPRUS Motion into some exciting free apps I've been building on the side, so stay tuned to the updates section for more information! My longterm goal is to build an online community where players all around the world can upload and share their creations with others.
Features of the KEPRUS animation engine:
- Powerful and dynamic 2D joint-based animation engine
- Interpolation accurately creates all of the inbetween frames, allowing the user to concentrate on setting the key poses
- Use any 2D image! Drawings, photographs, digital paintings!
- Forward and inverse kinematics
- Physics-enabled joints
- Fully body ragdolls
- Animation methods can be applied on a joint-by-joint basis, meaning a character's left arm can be controlled via realtime inverse kinematics, their right arm controlled through physics, their legs controlled by keyframed inverse kinematics, and the remainder of their body controlled by standard keyframed animation
- Facial animation
- Aim joints allow a character's head, eyes, or any other joint to remain fixated and rotated towards a target point in the environment
- Multiple simultaneous animation sequences - assign an animation sequence to the upper body while the lower half plays a different animation sequence (or even assign a separate animation sequence to each individual joint!)
- Animation blending - transition from one animation sequence to another seamlessly with interpolated frames calculated realtime.
I'm currently working on many more new and exciting features, such as full body inverse kinematics, keyframe transitions, custom hit boxes, and a few surprises I hope you all will enjoy!
The majority of Reobirth's soundtrack is being composed by Ben Rawles, a very talented and versatile musician I've been working with! The music in Reobirth will mainly fall between an enjoyable blend of mood-setting ambiance and powerful orchestrated pieces. Be sure to head over to Ben's website to hear some more samples of his work!
Blue Blizzard World theme
Ben is a music composer and sound designer, working with clients across the world. He's also currently studying for his Bachelors degree at Leeds College of Music in the UK.
I began work on this project roughly eight months ago. I currently have a brainstorming document of over 100 pages full of ideas and weapons and items and spells and monsters and the story line from start to end. I'm finishing up the final touches on the animation system and have begun development of the actual game engine. Now that I have most of the planning finished and a strong visual direction in my mind of where I'd like this game to go, I've reached a point where funding becomes a key aspect of the project's continued development, because:
Your Funding Helps!
Reobirth has been a completely self-funded venture. I'd like to continue working with Ben, as well as collaborate with a background artist to share the workload with, but this all requires funding (unless we intend on living on invisible money. And, I'm not a big fan of invisible money). Although I absolutely love designing and digitally painting all the characters and items and backgrounds that populate the world of Reobirth, additional help would improve the workflow and allow me to place a greater emphasis on programming and the overall development of Reobirth. Your generous donations will allow me to shift focus to a more full time basis as the lead designer and programmer.
(please note that all reward tiers are cumulative, meaning that you will receive ALL of the rewards from all previous tiers. For example, backing at $55 level will give you early beta access to both Reobirth and Keprus Motion, the 'Making of' eBook, the soundtrack, and a digital download of Reobirth upon release. The only exception is the final tier, which does NOT include the $175 reward of being an NPC in the game)
$1 - Every dollar counts. As a thank you for your support, you'll receive 3 downloadable Kickstarter exclusive wallpapers!
$10 - A digital download of Reobirth: Magic's Awakening and Keprus Motion for PC upon release (additionally, if stretch goals are reached for ports to other platforms, you will be given the option of selecting which platform you'd prefer for the digital download).
$20 - All of the above, plus a digital download of Reobirth: Magic's Awakening and Keprus Motion, plus a digital download of the official Reobirth: Magic's Awakening soundtrack!
$25 - All of the above, plus your name in the credits and early beta access to developmental builds of Reobirth! With this tier, you'll be able to experience special snippets of the game throughout the course of development up to release day. You'll serve as one of the special beta testers, providing invaluable feedback and sitting on the forefront of shaping the development of Reobirth!
$40 - All of the above (including beta access to Reobirth), but with this tier, you'll also receive early beta access to Keprus Motion! Get a headstart on bringing your 2D animations to life using this simple and powerful animation editor for creating Reobirth content!
$55 - All of the above, plus a digital download of the "Making of" Reobirth eBook, which includes a behind-the-scenes look at the process of developing a video game. Artwork, monsters, game design choices - I'll be sharing the "how" and "why" of Reobirth!
$175 - This is your special chance to be a warrior - your chance to shine. With this tier, I'll create an NPC of your likeness to appear in the world of Reobirth. You can submit a few lines of text that you'd like your virtual alter ego to speak and let your voice be heard around the world, but no profanity please! And of course, this tier includes all of the previous rewards!
$500 - Get your creative caps on! With this tier, you'll receive all of the above rewards (with exception of the $175 create-your-NPC) in addition to designing your very own enemy to appear in the world of Reobirth! You can bring your design to the table - a quick concept sketch, a full blown masterpiece, or even just a small description of an enemy you scribbled down on a napkin during dessert - it doesn't matter! We'll work together to design your character's artwork, stats, spells, and motions, and let your friends know that the totally rad five-eyed goblin monkey space alien they just got crushed by in the beanstalk caverns? Yeah, you made that. In addition, your name will go under a special contributor's section in the credits!
And what about Additional Funding?
Beyond the stretch goals, additional funding will also be used to work with additional team members! I've been tackling the programming and artwork, while Ben's been taking care of the music, but having additional help (eg. background artist, character designer, etc.) will allow me to personally place a greater focus on the programming.
Around the web!
In addition to the 'Updates' section here on Kickstarter, I'll be posting information about the project's development and other notable updates on the official Reobirth social sites. If you'd like to futher support this project past a donation (or even if you were unable to back at this time!), it would be greatly appreciated if you 'like' Reobirth on Facebook and follow on Twitter! This helps to build interest and awareness around the web, openly showing your support for the project, and plus (a very good benefit), it makes me feel all warm and tingly inside. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
As with any ambitious undertaking, there is the possibility of delays, unforeseen circumstances, and gigantic meteorite squids rudely inviting themselves over for brunch (which leads to comically awkward conversations when you're out of squid food). I hope my progress thus far is a strong testament to my determination and willingness to provide an intense and colorful battling game that is, above all, just simply fun. I've found the most common challenge for the majority of Kickstarter projects are delays. Although I have the game plan all written out and the direction this project needs to go, I'll admit that I'm not immune to delays. However, with that being said, I will try the absolute best within my power to ship this game on time -full-featured and of the highest quality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
