About this project

The project tells of the Hawaiian experience from old Hawaii into modern time through seven original songs and narration/storytelling by native Hawaiian composer, writer, musician and lead singer, Captain Jim Lani Zablan. An insider view of the Hawaiian ohana (family), values and heart.  His parents were the last generation of Hawaiian people to experience the loss of the Hawaiian kingdom and first generation of Hawaiian people to transition into the 20th century.  Joyous, sad, thoughtful, poignant, warm, yearning, entertaining and educational---"In the Old Hawaiian Way".  An initial release of 2000 albums are planned.  Submission to Grammy's in  July 2013.

"In the Old Hawaiian Way"

Lyrics and music by James Iwalani Zablan, © December, 2009

I want to sing about a time in Hawai’i
I want to sing about a time in my land
I want to sing about my mama and papa
I want to sing about the tears of Liliu            (Lili’u – Queen Lili’uokalani)
I want to sing about the lau kanaka            (lau kanaka – the people)
Who filled my heart  with aloha
I want to sing our music
In the old Hawaiian way.

I want to sing about a time in Hawai’i
When this ali’i walked the land            (ali’i – royal person)
And honored the gods
Kamehameha ali’i nui                 (ali’i nui – king)
And his law of the splintered paddle
Made it safe for you and for me
I want to sing of this ali’i
In the old Hawaiian way.

I want to sing about my mama and papa
Who were born into the ways of old
And loved by ohana                    (ohana – family)
 Surrounded by the new
And when kupuna whispered aloha        (Kupuna – elders)
The old ways faded away
I want to sing of my mama and papa
In the old Hawaiian way

I want to sing about the tears of Lili’u        (Lili’u – Queen Lili’uokalani)
Wahine mo’i  of our land                (Wahine Mo’i – Queen)
Beloved of her people
The bravest of them all
And when she sighed aloha ‘oe
The showers of heaven appeared            “Na waimaka o ka lani”
I want to sing about Lili’u
In the old Hawaiian way

I want to sing about the lau kanaka            (lau kanaka – the people)
Who are the people of the land
And the magic of the islands
Is in the spirit of our aloha
And the beauty of the ‘aina
Is a gift from heaven above
I want to sing about the people
In the old Hawaiian way

I want to sing about a time in Hawai’i
I want to sing about a time in my land
I want to sing about my mama and papa
I want to sing about the tears of Liliu
I want to sing about the lau kanaka
Who filled my heart with aloha
I want to sing our music

In the old Hawaiian way

Risks and challenges

The greatest risk and challenge in putting a music album together is completing the original songs. After three whole years, the lyrics and tunes for all seven original songs are done, thereby, eliminating the area of greatest risk. As for the rest of schedule, the only risks of concern are possible temporary delay, none which cannot be solved with alternatives.

This project is both a labor of aloha and a driving commitment to preserve for our younger and future generations of Hawaiian people and those who love our 'aina (land) an intimate look into our hearts and souls---our na'au. It will get done.
