HOW TO SAVE THIS LINOTYPE
Very honestly, even after some successfully completed impossible missions, saving this giant Linotype machine is not at all a piece of creamy cake.
Especially because the mission is NOT to just save it from scrap and bring it into a museum or showroom. NO, the essentially important part of our adventure is to RELOCATE this unique and super rare piece of technology to our new workshop and RESTART it with next generation operators. Developing a whole portfolio of new products which would be impossible to produce without it.
This adds a hefty chunk of complexity, but together with Willy Kolleger and several professional partners we have developed a clever masterplan to protect and caress every single part and detail so as the beautiful old lady will not at all be offended.
With your support, we can make it!
WHY SAVING A LINOTYPE DINOSAUR?
Linotype was the first letter-assembling machine in history that made it possible to print text without the complicated and time-consuming process of arranging each and every word by hand. TODAY, the iconic Linotype is the ULTIMATE MACHINE to produce and print text in an all analog way.
We do believe that exactly this all analog way enables us to manufacture one-of-a-kind products, with a very special feel that we love to describe as "magic". Not everybody can feel this yet, but more and more people all around the world re-discover this aspect in our increasingly digital world.
Therefore we started to develop a whole series of magic products that can only be produced by using the wonderful Linotyope machine of Mr. Kolleger.
WHAT YOU GET
We decided to celebrate the future of magic Linotype products with a small selection of pieces we carefully developed with Mr. Kolleger, Anna and Christian in preparation for this Kickstarter project. Magic products, especially produced for YOU, our brave backers, with all our analog heart and passion.
Please allow us to present you a small gallery and some previews of our final selection (find more details and pricing over there on the right in the reward section).

Because, after decades dedicated to analog printing, Mr. Kolleger has decided to retire and will close the doors of his workshop. Founded in 1976 and having been run ever since, this amazing Linotype workshop has been coping with all the changes in printing technology for decades. We can not thank this wonderful gentleman enough that he supported us to start learning the Linotype in order to connect his beloved machine with the next generation. Inventing new all analog products in a more and more digital world. Creating the basis for the future of LINOTYPE.
By the end of this year Mr. Kolleger finally has to give up his magic workshop in the heart of Vienna and therefore we do not have much time left to move the machine to a new location. THANK GOD WE FOUND CHRISTIAN, who has a superb background in printing and was ready to dive into this new adventure and learn from Mr. Kolleger, the true master of Linotype!!!
Together we developed these Kickstarter products and already produced the prototypes you see above. NOW it's time to act and move this wonderful monster to a new location and start the future.
WHO WE ARE
Our mission and goal at Supersense is to prevent the demise of analog technologies and give them a home in a digital age. By (re)discovering and presenting analog producers, products and technologies we restore the analog realm to its rightful place in the digital world - against all odds and prophecies.
At our all analog manufactory we are letterpress printing record covers, postcards and more, based on the very original printing principles and techniques, exclusively working with pure analog tools like antique types and hand-cut linoleum printing plates.
Florian "Doc" best known for his success in keeping the very last Polaroid film production facility based in Enschede, The Netherlands, up and running. Resulting in the suprising global comeback of instant film to the market. His current, Vienna-based venture SUPERSENSE has the mission and goal of preventing the demise of analog technologies and giving them a home in a digital age.
Christian. Just like his father, Christian already looks back at a lifetime full of printery, and chances are, that it's no longer blood but magenta running through his veins. Having grown-up in a printer family enterprise he is a skilled printer, whose master taught him the art of printing on nothing less but a Linotype machine. His love for this machine was so tremendous that a few years later he became an owner of a Linotype machine himself. But as regular business with his machine shrank, he couldn't afford keeping it any longer and donated it to the Lower Austrian Industry Museum. His excitement to operate a Linotype machine now again for you and Supersense can't be described in words but only felt in the letters which he's producing.
Anna is not only a newly graduated installation artist from the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts but also the chief printer and artist at Supersense. Here she's dancing all day between wood type and lead type, beating her rhythm on these old printing machines that incite activity and life. Anna jumps from intuition to perfection and back to the joy of doing things with her hands, feeling structures, grasping ideas like objects. As a technician, she is always in search of better results, as an artist she has an eye for even the finest hair to draw or print or cut or emboss - creating the most special print artworks at the Supersense printery.
Willy Kolleger is key to the success of this adventure. He never gave up to fight for his magic machine and this radical technology, and only because of his energy we had the chance to learn about the Linotype and fall in everlasting love. Before finally enjoying his retirement after almost 60 years of hard work, Mr. Kolleger agreed to support us the best he can in order to re-locate and re-start his beloved machine. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR ANALOG HEARTS!!!
HOW YOUR MONEY WILL BE USED
On the one hand, supporting our project and pre-paying for your favorite rewards will enable us to pre-finance the best quality materials for simply the best Linotype rewards of all time.
On the other hand, and most importantly, only the success of this Kickstarter campaign will provide us with the funds essentially needed to do something almost impossible:
Together with our heavy duty partner Mr. Schandl, who is specialized on super carefully re-locating and re-starting magic print equipment, we will
>> Carefully take apart the LINOTYPE, so it can be re-located
>> Also carefully pack and relocate all other items which are essential for building the future of Linotype, most importantly the big collection of type sets
>> Moving these tools to a new location next door to our existing manufactory (the former house keeper apartment)
>> Preparing this Rumpelkammer as new home for the Linotype, which will include some modifications in the door with, the power and water supply,...
>> Re-assembling and setting up the machine, slowly starting it up again
>> Training Christian as new generation Linotype operator to perfection and beyond
All these actions will cost more than 7.777 EUR but with the success of this Kickstarter project we will have the seed financing we urgently need for a good kick-off to make this dream a reality.
ABOUT THE LINOTYPE MACHINE
Thomas Edison called the Linotype machine the "Eighth Wonder of the World". Developed by the US American inventor Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1884, the Linotype revolutionized typesetting, especially newspaper publishing - making it possible for a relatively small number of operators to set type for many pages on a daily basis. Before the Linotype, daily newspapers were limited to eight pages.
The name of the machine comes from the fact that it produces an entire line of metal type at once - a "line-o'-type". This was a significant improvement over the previous industry standard, i.e., manual, letter-by-letter typesetting using a composing stick and drawers of letters.
The machine assembles matrices, which are molds for the letter forms, in a line. The assembled line is then cast as a single piece, called a slug, of type metal in a process known as hot metal typesetting. The matrices are then returned to the type magazine from which they came, to be reused later. This allows much faster typesetting and composition than original assembling by hand in which operators place down one pre-cast glyph (metal letter, punctuation mark or space) at a time.
Although these machines were revolutionary, technology began to supersede the Linotype and they were scrapped and melted-down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence. The highly-skilled operators of the Linotype struggle against time - if their skills are not passed along to a new generation of operators, the machine will die completely.
To understand these machines and their magic better, we warmly recommend you to watch LINOTYPE - THE FILM, a stunning, feature-length documentary by Doug Wilson, Brandon Goodwin and Jess Heugel.
Georg Schandl & and his fabulous team with all their expertise skills even the highest printing machine mountains can be moved and restarted
A-Team for all their endless muscle power when lifting heavy treasures to our new print heaven
Michael Luger for his availability and passion to always put our stories into the right light and moving images
Mrs. Kolleger for sharing her husband with us in this crazy adventure
Doug Wilson, Brandon Goodwin & Jess Heugel for capturing the magic of Linotype like no one else in their film "Linotype The Film" and providing us with stills for our campaign.
Risks and challenges
When transferring the LINOTYPE machine from Mr. Kolleger to our next generation workshop, parts can move and shift. BUT - with our experienced printing machine mover Mr. Georg Schandl, re-adjusting single mechanical components can be done in a way that guarantees impeccable operation.
Moreover, Mr. Kolleger has a huge collection of spare parts for repair and promised to help us re-building and operating his LINOTYPE.
As an honest summary, we only see one super scary risk: NOT raising enough budget in order to move these machines before the demolition teams enter the old workshop.
If this project doesn't get funded we'll see the another one of the very few linotype machines go and the threat of this technology becoming completely extinct becomes real.
