ONE INSTANT. Analog packfilm re-invented
After more than 2 years of intense R&D we are now ready to start production of our next generation Type 100 peel apart instant film.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, January 4 2019 3:57 PM UTC +00:00.
WHAT IS ONE INSTANT?
"It's not that we need new ideas, but we need to stop having old ideas." Edwin H. Land
In spring 2016 Fuji announced termination of the world's last instant packfilm production line. Since that day - more than 2 years ago! - we have been desperately searching for "impossible" ways to save this iconic film material. Just like we successfully did with the legendary Polaroid film by purchasing the last original factory in 2008 and restarting production the classic way.
We failed! And honestly this was the best thing that could happen.
Because finally we were forced to think outside the box, urged to develop a completely new approach, just and very precisely based on exactly what we had.
"Any problem can be solved using the materials in the room." Edwin H. Land
More than proudly we are today presenting our all new ONE INSTANT Type 100 peel-apart instant film for classic packfilm cameras exclusively here on Kickstarter.
ONE INSTANT is NOT a CLASSIC PACKFILM but a next generation instant film based on a new, radical concept. We will start producing a modern peel-apart instant film in a small new manufactory together with carefully selected partners, designed for both, the experienced peel-apart film lovers and the modern, next generation analog photographers. Not even daring to compete with the classic film legends of packfilm history.
ONE INSTANT is a SINGLE SHOT peel-apart instant film. Supplied to you in a sealed, pre-loaded, lightproof eco-friendly paper cartridge. This is of essential importance because only a hand loaded single shot cartridge can be produced without the need of crazy machines and millions of pre-investment. Our special Kickstarter Edition will contain 6 ONE INSTANT cartridges.
ONE INSTANT is COMPATIBLE. It is designed to be used in ALL these thousands of legendary classic type 100 packfilm cameras out there. You just have to load the paper cartridge into your camera under any light condition and thread the transparent tongue through the rollers of your camera before closing it. Thereafter proceed as always by removing the dark slide paper, exposing and thereafter pulling the transparent tongue to squeeze the film through the rollers of your camera to start the development process.
ONE INSTANT starts in COLOR! The first edition of our all new ONE INSTANT film series will be made of original Polaroid P7 material supplied by our fantastic partners from the 20x24 Studio in Ashland, MA: John Reuter, Ted McLelland and Nafis Azad. They rescued this material in 2008, carefully stored the positive and negative in giant roles and Ted started mixing a simply amazing new reagent for super fresh magic pods at their laboratory in Ashland.
Specifications are: Film Speed: ISO 125/DIN 22 / Development Time and Temperature: 90 seconds at 70°F (21°C) and above / Balanced for average daylight (5500 °K) / Finish: Glossy.
ONE INSTANT is REAL - as we did not rest before holding the first truly real ONE INSTANT photograph in our trembling hands.
It was not enough to trust our amazing P7 lab tests and to just present our promising day light pull-and-spread tests of our fine-tuned, eco-friendly paper cartridge and film-feed system.
Our goal for this Kickstarter Campaign was nothing less than real reproducible photographic results. A first real series of handmade, super early, experimental stage prototypes, exposed with classic packfilm cameras and pulled out for development. We cumbersomely built these in complete darkness from hand-cut positive and negative, containing a hand built "wizard Ted pods" from Ashland. All of this happened in a tiny temporary bonsai darkroom, equipped with just one pair of affordable IR goggles.
Please be aware that these prototypes do NOT resemble the final quality of our ONE INSTANT product as all components for these tests are folded and cut by hand in complete darkness. Making it all but impossible to come close to the potential, which this wonderful material will bring to you as soon as we are able to professionally and accurately manufacture the final product at our new production facility, because ONE INSTANT is much more than just a film...
ONE INSTANT is a tiny, bespoke, dream-come-true MANUFACTORY in Vienna. ONE INSTANT film editions will be produced WITHOUT the need of giant machines, huge factory spaces and large teams. Our all new manufactory will just consist of a small beautiful darkroom for all production steps that need darkness (mainly the insertion of the negative into the lightproof paper cartridge), a beautiful daylight assembly room and of course our beloved all analog printshop for all paper work, cartridge punching, producing all our hand-made packaging and communication materials.
With the exception of the supply of some external photographic materials as well as some base material for our packaging (sealing foil and paper) we will be able to perform and perfect each and every step of our new production process in-house with a small team and a small assortment of classic equipment combined with some sophisticated new machines, furniture and tools. We can hardly tell you how wonderful it feels to start this project from scratch WITHOUT the heavy burden of a giant old-fashioned film factory, designed for the production of many millions of films by hundreds of workers, decades ago.
ONE INSTANT is PRECIOUS. We strongly do believe that analog instant photography urgently deserves a new understanding of quality and our true respect in today's world defined by digital photography.
Beyond doubt, the unique selling points of the glory past are all gone: digital is much more instant, much more convenient, much more almost everything compared to the analog ancestor and, on top of that, it's for free.
ONE INSTANT therefore was developed and designed with all our love and pride to become your most breathtakingly adorable choice whenever it all boils down to the one and only aspect which digital photography will never ever cover:
Capture and preserve your very special magic moments with very special and real original photographs, slowly developing in your hands (or under your arm, caressed with your body heat on cold days). Carefully peeled apart to reveal their fascinating chemistry, magically transforming into your precious keepsake. Filling the air with this unique smell that finally will seal your love relation with this material for eternity and beyond.
Therefore we do believe that in today's world a single exposure cartridge makes total sense as each and every shot will be a very special experience anyway. We worked hard to make every little detail of this ONE INSTANT experience as precious as possible. Starting with an adorable packaging that will become your favorite archive box, and of course ending with the unique experience to take your pictures with one of the most magic peel-apart materials of all Polaroid times, the Polaroid P7.
ONE INSTANT is EXPENSIVE. Yes it truly is. But not because we finally want to purchase this kinky car we have been dreaming of, but because it is truly really expensive to produce it. Because each and every piece will be practically made by hand. Because we will use only the most precious high quality components we can possibly get. Again, please do NOT compare us to Fuji. You have our word that we will reduce the price whenever we can carefully optimise production to reduce our costs. Moreover, for all of you who decide to support this project with your pledge right away, we developed some early mover special-price rewards.

ONE INSTANT TEAM
With all the crazy ones. Only the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. Since more than 20 years we connect makers, tinkerers, inventors, believers and creators all over the world to think and act against all odds and prophecies. Pursuing our mission of materially reducing the irrevocable atrophy of analog assets in a digital world. Allow us to introduce our core team for this ONE INSTANT campaign :
Your passion and love for this photographic medium, your support, positive energy, friendship, guidance and support over all these impossible years was probably the most essential drive for starting this mission.
Out of the box visionary, inventor and photographic secrets super expert who pushed this project into reality. Only because of his genius single shot paper cartridge solution (replacing the traditional super complicated origami style folded 10 pack), this film can be produced in our bespoke manufactory in Vienna by hand, allowing a new future for this beloved format.
Used her astonishing design powers to force the idea of a paper cartridge system into reality, side by side with Uwe. Re-charged all of us with her endless pool of positive energy whenever a potential roadblock was in our way.
FLORIAN "DOC" KAPS
Unstoppable, passionate, crazy analog visionary who first saved Polaroid film and now undertakes everything to bring a new packfilm into this world.
JOHN REUTER, TED McLELLAND, NAFIS AZAD. THE 20x24 TEAM
Ted, wizard of pod making with outstanding film chemistry experience, John, who started it all by rescuing a giant arsenal of essential instant film material, Nafis with his impressive engineering background and test sample assembly skills.
Handicraft talent who is turning our Rumpelkammer into a proper professional darkroom and always lends a helping hand.
ANNA & EMMA TATU
Letterpress design and print geniuses, creative force behind all our best looking analog dreams, developing the most beautiful and safe package for our new film.
Holding everything together and melting into tears when realizing that this might be Doc's last (but most important) instant film adventure (and hers).
ONE INSTANT is just a BEGINNING.
This campaign is NOT about saving a cool retro style technology from the PAST. We need your support to finally build an innovative and sustainable FUTURE for truly magic analog film materials. It will all start with the first ONE INSTANT P7 color film produced in our new bespoke instant film manufactory in Vienna. This will be our first edition and we plan to manufacture around 50,000 ONE INSTANT single shot cartridges out of the saved P7 stock from 20x24 Studio (8,333 Six Packs). Exclusively available for pre-order here on Kickstarter and ready to be shipped from April 2019 onwards. But WE PROMISE that as soon as the ONE INSTANT manufactory is up and running, we will dive into our long list of additional analog projects that will become possible with this new setup, optimized to produce small editions of the most iconic instant film materials by hand: A positive/negative b/w type 100 ONE INSTANT film? ONE INSTANT 8x10? A ONE INSTANT paper cartridge for pre-coated glass plates? ONE INSTANT instant slide film?...
HOW YOUR MONEY WILL BE USED
(for but not in ONE INSTANT)
Your money is essential to convert our beloved experimental prototypes into a real astonishing product that meets our quality standards and your expectations and can be produced, packed and shipped in reasonable quantities at our manufactory.
To reach this goal we have to first set up and rent our dream manufactory with 3 dedicated areas (darkroom / assembly room / printshop) and then equip it with the perfect tools and machines for optimized production. Some of these machines will be run-of-the-mill, a small selection will have to be customized for our special purpose. Approx. 40% of the budget.
We will also need to finally start paying at least some of our super dedicated team members and start to build and train a (hopefully big!!!) new team for smooth professional fulfillment of this campaign. Approx. 15% of the budget.
Last but not least we will purchase all the special high-quality components from our carefully selected partners from all over the world, shipping them to Vienna. Most importantly the iconic masterrolls of the very ultimate stock of Polaroid P7 positive and negative from 20x24 studio and Ted's magic Vienna pods. Approx. 45% of the budget
ONE INSTANT is CRAZY.
And this is the most important thing about it. We honestly do understand and even agree that it does not make any sense for Fuji and Polaroid to even spend one second thinking about possible ways to build a future for "essentially important" niche market products that will never ever earn them millions. But as these big companies are getting bigger and bigger, gaining more and more control in this world, we are losing more and more wonderful products and technologies on a daily basis. Because they do not enable managers to build short term hockey stick profit charts on their back. Yes, we are ready to call our mission and our beloved product crazy. And yes, we are even more motivated by being told by the "experts" and industry leaders that it will be impossible. But please allow us to remind you that Polaroid - against all odds - introduced instant film with just 56 available cameras in exactly one shop in downtown Boston. And, in this crazy spirit, please permit us to celebrate this adventure on KICKSTARTER, this wonderful platform that was exactly invented to convert even the most crazy dreams into reality and to make this world a truly better place.
THE HISTORY OF PACKFILM
(in ONE INSTANT)
Instant packfilm was introduced in 1963 as a breathtaking upgrade from the first-generation rollfilm system. For many it is the highest quality and most professional instant film ever produced. Other than the later integral systems, the final picture of peel-apart film is NOT covered by a multi-layer coated sheet, which always tends to blur the perception of the image.
The wonderful story of why Edwin Land decided to nevertheless develop an integral system originates in that famous official presidential dinner where a lady politely asked Mr. Land if he please can invent something to stop these incredible amounts of peel apart film papers flying around Central Park.
Back in 2006 we had the chance to visit the very last Polaroid Packfilm factory in Scotland , shortly before it closed down based on a deal with Fuji to continue producing Polaroid-branded OEM packfilm in their factories in Asia.
After many decades and zillions of wonderful packfilm pictures taken all over the world, the packfilm business constantly downscaled. Private photographers and ambitious next generation artists were clearly not enough to create sufficient business for the Fuji company. As the last packfilm high-volume-burning passport picture industry finally converted to digital and globally ended in 2015, it was just a matter of a few weeks to terminate the packfilm program in spring 2016 and convert the packfilm machine into Instax integral film machines, meeting the exploding demand of this newly discovered analog gadget.
Not even a visit, followed by a very personal letter from our dear friend and supporter David Bohnett, also know as the Analog Baron, translated into Japanese, printed on finest Washi paper and sent to the Fuji CEO together with a serious bank guarantee, could help to change their minds.
This was the moment it truly became an impossible project. Luckily, this always has been our speciality.

ONE more INSTANT
(if you find time for a personal note from doc)
All of you, who really made it all the way down to these lines, please allow me to end this maybe longest story section in Kickstarter history with my very personal instant film fight psychotherapy.
Writing this text has been incredibly intense and at the same time incredibly heartwarming for me. In the course of writing I realized that this campaign is much more than just about pack film - much more than finally setting up a small instant film manufactory in my hometown - this campaign is potentially the action-packed last chapter of the crazy instant film story of my life.
A story that started with this very first Polaroid picture in 2003. Shot with a Holga camera on Type 80 pack film. Fascinated by the magic of this awkward image I started to research about Polaroid and surprisingly absolutely nobody but me seemed to really care about this iconic material. Not even the top management of Polaroid. Together with my famous sidekick Lexi aka Webomaestro, I took my chance and started my career as a Polaroid salesman, ambassador, evangelist. Discovering the astonishing fact that digital surprisingly had opened a new perspective for unique Polaroid photographs and the challenging adventures to capture them. Soon expired film and "carefully matured images" became our super best selling materials.
From 2005 to 2008 I tried everything to convince the Polaroid management that suddenly their "old outdated" key product is rising again. But not even my exploding sales numbers, a network of more than 40.000 new online customers all over the world and the fantastic comeback story of the global comeback of the Vinyl could help to re-start their believe in analog instant photography. Their only real reaction I could obtain was the heart warming invitation to the closing event of their last Polaroid film factory in Enschede, NL.
This was the moment to start a company called "The Impossible Project". A company dedicated to the essential mission to fight for a future of a magic analog material in a more and digital world. A company driven by the vision to do and think things differently than big companies do. A company built shoulder to shoulder with its customers in a time when Kickstarter unfortunately was not yet invented.
We succeeded in saving Polaroid film and much more than that. In 2017 The Impossible Project bought - and thereafter became - Polaroid. A big, powerful and proud company, with the true potential to come back as one of the world's most iconic brands.
But did we really succeed with our original and most important mission and vision to finally build a company that uncompromisingly fights for endangered analog technologies against all odds??? Changing the world by pursuing impossible projects???
I still do believe that ultimately the answer will and has to be a loud YES!! This has been the main driving force to withdraw from all my official roles at Impossible/Polaroid in 2013 and to start SUPERSENSE. A new company buit from scratch, learning from my mistakes and FINALLY building our dream company with my ever loyal friend and true partner Lexi.
4 years have passed and this Kickstarter campaign launching today is now our big moment of truth. Because this time we really did our homework the very best we possibly can, investing more than 2 years to finally reduce the whole crazy complexity of instant film production (which has been our demon and biggest burden for so many impossible years) down to a simply perfect solution. Producing a new generation instant film by hand in our beloved home town. Re-inventing the analog instant material we loved the very most from the very beginning: peel-apart instant film.
Thank you so very very much for all your support to together create a happy end for this last chapter in our ever lasting fight for this magic material within the next 30 days.
Yours very truly,
Risks and challenges
We really spent a lot of time and all our energy to reduce the risk of this campaign to the absolut minimum. We literally built many many protoytpes of all different kinds, spent hours in testing and defined all essentially important suppliers. Just to be 120% sure that we really can produce this films for your as soon as we have our new manufactory up and running. The only risk we see is that this might take longer than expected but based on our long experience we also feel comfortable that our current estimates are not overly optimistic.
There very honestly is no PLAN B. If this project and our dear ONE INSTANT film really doesn't get funded I honestly do not know how to continue fighting against the horrible threat of this technology becoming completely and irreversibly extinct.
- All gone!
