About

The Power of perfection: mechanical perfection caresses well proven optical design and brilliance in German made masterpiece lens with outstanding contrast & sharpness across the whole image frame and silky bokeh. The lens is light and compact - the ideal companion for everyday use. Made in Germany but affordable with attractive Kickstarter value.

The Travegon 50mm f: 2.5 is the fascinating combination of a close to perfect optical system, designed for mirrorless cameras in a compact lens housing. The ultimate goal when designing this lens was to create an outstanding image, optical and mechanical quality at an attractive price so that the increasing popularity of manual photography would meet the appropriate modern lens which allows to take full advantage of the technological innovations of modern mirrorless camera bodies. All lenses will be handmade in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, to ensure the highest quality but sourcing of materials will be done internationally to enable an attractive price point. This is a unique combination taking full advantage of globalized supply chains and German know how to the advantage of the backer.

The Travegon 50 was developed with the uncompromised goal to meet the most stringent quality demands for analog and digital photography. The Travegon 50 shows outstanding performance when it comes to contrast, resolution, structure and tonal depth.

The Travegon is a lens for people who want the extraordinary but do not want to spend extra. It is for photographers who see the bigger picture, who look beyond the obvious, question the average and recognize the significant in everyday things. They want to enlarge their own horizons but not to empty their pockets. All of this calls for the Travegon - a lens that goes beyond the undistinguished but is affordable for all.

Travegon will help you to take powerful photographs anytime, anywhere. It is distinct due to its compact design, light weight and classical gauss optical design, as well as its fabulous focal length which provides close to human eye natural perspectives. The unobtrusive, classical design makes this the ideal standard lens and an outstanding choice in terms of image quality, speed, size and weight. Its exquisite image quality goes all the way to the edges of the image field, and excellent contrast is achieved at all apertures.

The creation of the Travegon 50 marks the beginning of a series of lenses that will span from 30 mm to 135 mm. All will be designed in Germany, internationally sourced for components to get the best possible value for your money but without compromises on your quality. Final assembly and most importantly sophisticated quality control will take place at facilities in one of the traditional centers of German photography – Bad Kreuznach.

Every single lens is produced to internationally recognized standards paying great attention to the correct alignment of all its components. Special attention is paid to getting the finest glass at the best price as the choice of glass is critical to obtain high sharpness. We use a custom made specially coated glass of low dispersion plus a special coating on the front and back surfaces against scratches (ARASC) plus the individual lenses of the system are positioned with highest accuracy using automated centering in order to achieve highest accuracy to avoid unwanted out of focus areas in the edges of the frame.

Where the photographer makes use of the special effects of out of focus areas these are characterized by an unobtrusive softness which is rightfully described and characterized as “Silky Bokeh”.

With only 50/60 (Leica/Fuji, Sony) mm and weighing slightly above 270 g/ 9.5 oz only (figures vary slightly depending on mount) the lens is a very fine piece of the finest precision engineering. It is the compact companion for your photography.

What is the best 50 mm lens? Certainly there is no easy answer but the Travegon 50 comes close to what we consider the perfect lens. The Travegon 50 is an opto-mechancial masterpiece of perfect craftsmanship with a combination of high precision aluminum and brass being united into a dream like symbiosis.

Start with its outstanding haptic. The turn of the focus ring feels smooth and soft, yet it is precise and the travel rings distance is small enough so that you can shoot moving subjects in the street easily.

The lens weighs only slightly above 270g and its discreet look unite with the body of the camera inconspicuously.

But most of all the optical characteristics make this lens so unique. First of all it is the outstanding resolution that characterizes this lens. It creates almost perfect images right "out of cam" that are extremely sharp and have an outstanding contrast. But it is the perfection with which all different tones of color and light are transmitted that create that special Travegon look. Images become extremely realistic and tangible but at the same time natural. The transition from sharpness to out of focus is soft and creamy of a so far unmet perfection of a lens in this price range.

The lens is the ideal everyday tool where the image and the photographer merge to become one and the boundaries between subject and photographer seem to disappear.

The Travegon 50 is the perfect alternative for the ambitious photographer who wants to see his view of the world reflected in his images and not the signature of the lens get into the foreground. With all humble respect for other great lenses of the past and yet to come: the Travegon 50 is the perfection of the essential mechanical and optical elements a masterpiece lens must have to create a lens of outstanding character.

The Travegon 50 mm f 2.5 can be your prime lens because it generates a “normal” image in outstanding quality much like your eye does. But it must be remembered that this is only true for a full frame format size sensor. For other sensor types the “magic 50 “mm must be multiplied with the crop factor of the sensor, e.g. 1.5 for APS C, to get the “real” focal length. The 50mm lens all of a sudden becomes a 75 mm portrait lens with an APS C sensor.

But see for yourself how versatile this lens can be for you:

Weighing only slightly more than 270 g/9,5 ounces the Travegon measures only between 58 and 66 mm depending on the chosen mount. It has a traditional “mountain and valley” focusing ring that makes it extremely easy to handle. Despite the fact that it is fully manual the camera focusing is extremely trouble free using focus peaking technology of Sony or Fuji. Of course the Leica M version is rangefinder coupled.

Albert Schacht (21.01.1890-24.08.1984) worked for Zeiss-Ikon AG in Dresden from 1926 to 1939 before he became technical director of the famous Steinheil Optical works, Munich. With the outbreak of the war it became his responsibility to work for military oriented projects for the coming years. In 1948 Schacht found his own optical company in Munich. While he was not an optical engineer himself he had worked with Ludwig Bertele for some years at Steinheil. Ludwig Bertele was one of the most outstanding optical engineers of the last century and designed most of the Schacht lenses in the late 40s and fifties. Schacht also seeked close cooperation with universities optical institutes in Germany to ensure that he was at the forefront of optical design.

In order to ensure the best possible precision mechanics he joined forces with a gentleman by the name of Constantin Rauch whose companies were already the major supplier of components for Zeiss / Oberkochen and other German optical firms.

But Rauch’s group of companies was lacking his own brand and development. So the two joined forces and created the combination of the most advanced optical developments done by leading optical engineer and combined it with the precision mechanics of Rauch and the process management of Schacht. Together they formed A. Schacht, Ulm.

The second critical advancement took place when Schacht convinced Christian Ullrich who was a leading engineer at Schneider, Kreuznach to take over the quality assessment and control of the young firm. When Ullrich joined the company in 1957 he came along with his experience from Schneider Kreuznach and immediately began to establish a one of its kind set of quality control system that was unique and led to the outstanding reputation that Schacht lenses were able to acquire.

So the Schacht company was a unique combination of men uniting the know-how of the best optical engineers with leading precision mechanics and outstanding quality assessment based on the know-how collected in the past, partly turbulent 20 years of German optical industry. The goal was to produce a small portfolio of excellent lenses at affordable prices in outstanding quality.

The know-how in optical as well as mechanical design and production that still remains in Bad Kreuznach is the foundation on which the return of the new A.Schacht lens – the Travegon 50mm, f 2.5 – is based. It is not a plain remake of the historical lens but a modern lens build with the same spirit and under the same guiding principles like its historic predecessor.

Like the historical Schacht it is again the result of the cooperation of experienced optical engineers with equally professional experts of the production and quality assurance of optical, high precision lenses. The quality and the production leadership is with Ivo Pavlik and Michael Schroeder. They have been working in the production of cine lenses for several years and worked closely with and for Schneider Kreuznach. Furthermore we have ensured ourselves of the support of Rainer Schnabel who has vast experience in the production of quality lenses. So the design, production and quality assurance right here in Bad Kreuznach was the next logical step to take. Production and quality control will be with former members of their team who worked in the Schneider Kreuznach cine lens production. Quality assurance will be guaranteed by Ivo Pavlik along with Rainer Schnabel while Michael Schroeder is in charge of the production.

Ivo Pavlik studied industrial engineering and was deeply involved in establishing a process oriented quality mangement system at the MDC-department of IBM Storage Systems company in Mainz, Germany. In the last 10 years he has establishes and maintained an ISO 9001 quality system at Patalux Industrial service. He is also co founder of OPC optics, acompany specialized in high quality optical lenses and optical components. Ivo runs his own consulting firm, CONSILIUM ET OPERA, through which he shares his know how with other parties.

To further strengthen the team with the highest know how possible Rainer Schnabel, former head of production at CW Sonderoptic, Wetzlar, joined the team. He has invaluable experience in the transfer of developed lenses into efficient serial production. With his help and together with experienced German optical engineers the lens was designed and its major components were tested in several stress situations to make sure it will work under all environmental conditions.

Experience shared ... but sometimes it needs a close look by Rainer Schnabel
Experience shared ... but sometimes it needs a close look by Rainer Schnabel

Ivo Pavlik, Michael Schroeder and Rainer Schnabel will ensure the efficient and quality oriented production of Travegon 50.

Many of the skills needed to create the Travegon 50 were thus acquired when working for the Cine department of Schneider Kreuznach or in the high end lens production at CW Sonderoptic in Wetzlar. Given the history of A. Schacht to develop and build the Travegon 50, f: 2.5 this felt like closing a circle in the most logical sense.

At the same time it was our goal to keep production costs at a level that allows for a price/value ratio enabling to reach a very competitive price level for the Travegon in the future. To reach this goal international sourcing will be applied but without compromises on quality. Assembly and quality control will take place in Bad Kreuznach to ensure and guarantee the famous Schacht quality.

The mtf chart shows the sharpness of the image. The fall of at the edges is small and finest details are rendered with more than 40% contrast in the corners at f2.5 and even more than 50% already at f4.0 which enables the photographer to take images with an outstanding detail rendition all across the image.

Risks and challenges

It is the nature of this project that we have to organize many different international supplieres in order to get the required quality at efficient prices. This might lead to problems in the coordination. However we are experienced in those tasks and have always back up solutions if one supplier should fail.
We have got our own production facilities and have been producing for leading opticla firms in the past. But we have to be realistic that we have designed a lens from scratch for the first time. We have got a first prototype but we still want to improve it even more and it will be a challenge to bring it into serial production so that we will be as effcient as can be.
This means we will have to optimize our work along the way but problems might arise. We are sure we we can overcome all isues but time might become an issue when solving the problems.
The new A. Schacht , Travegon 50 mm, f 2:5 lens will be a lens of high quality and modern state of the art lens technology specially designed for mirrorless cameras. We will put quality above everything else and want to achieve highest results in the optical quality of the product which might cause a few iterations in the production process and lead to a slowdown.
We have put in some room for error but all our expected delivery dates are estimates only. But rest assured that we will do everything possible to get this powerful lens to you as soon as possible.
