“Memoria. Hablar. Dignidad. 40” is a multimedia Arts program of the B4 Peace program (http://b4peace.net) which has received an invitation for its program, from Villa Grimaldi – Parque de la Paz (http://villagrimaldi.cl/) to hold an evening of dance, poetry and music on the solstice December 21, 2013 and to install a B4 Peace Art Exhibit and hold a Peace Art Workshop. (Come join us! Dec 21, 2013 – January 21, 2014).
Forty years ago the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende was overthrown (with some help alas from Nixon and Kissinger, etc). At this time thousands of artists were imprisoned and some like Victor Jara were killed and thousands more like Isabel Allende, Inti Illimani and others fled their homeland. So we are holding this event to be a healing collaboration between our Irish, American, Canadian and French B4 Peace team with the artists of today in Chile including Mapuches who work to improve human rights.
The purpose of “Memoria. Hablar. Dignidad. 40.” is to promotes Peace, National Reconciliation and Human Rights in Chile through the arts. This project requires $20,000 but don’t worry, we’re not asking for YOU for that much money on Kickstarter (though every dollar will be more than welcome to make this peace art program awesome!) Luckily, we have some frequent flyer miles and enough money to feed our international team. Our fabulous partner The Villa Grimaldi is providing us with an excellent stage for the performances (dance, music, poetry and more/mas) and a huge garden for the Peace Art Gallery (Amnesty Solstice Tower, Silence is Complicity banners and the 100 Flowers Poem Banners in 100+ languages).
However, we desperately need YOU to help us fund our Chilean (including Mapuches) colleagues, performers who will star in the opening ceremony! We need funds for eight Chileans dancers, six musicians, ten artists and a poet/poetess or two. We know several artists from all over Chile who want to dance and sing with us but none can afford the cost of travel and place to sleep (which is expensive in Santiago) even if we all squeeze in and bring our own air mattresses. We would like to pay the artists (even though we won’t get paid).
We need at least $2000 to cover all their costs and feed them! Not too much to ask?
Whatever your choice is, THANK YOU! And keep fighting for Humans Rights and Peace in your daily life.
Risks and challenges
We are very lucky to have a B4 Peace Team (www.b4peace.net) that has worked on projects like “Memoria. Hablar. Dignidad.” since 2010. The two partners organizations on this project GRACE Cares (www.gracecares.org) and Namaya Productions (www.namayaproductions.com) have collaborated on a variety of US and international (Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America) programs for over a decade. Our Chilean host partner “The Peace Park at Villa Grimaldi” (www.villagrimaldi.cl) has a long history of hosting national and international art events, that supports human rights.
So maybe we are being optimistic but we see no real risks for this project, but, of course there will be challenges. Coordinating a team of creative musicians and artists can be like herding cats, but our 2 kitties at home have trained us well and we like collaborating with other artists so we think all we go well.
Skype, the internet, etc are great ways to communicate these days but, to make sure things go smoothly we plan to arrive in Santiago six weeks ahead of time to allow times for rehearsal and installation of the art project.
Chile does have 10 live volcanoes and earthquakes so we could have a really rocking performance courtesy of mother nature. We would work with the Peace Park to reschedule if need be. But we will include a ceremony to Pachamama so hopefully she will be happy with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
