About

Nuclear Compost Site : : Twitter : : Facebook : : YouTube

Plotz is a game that explores the trade-offs, inter-connections, and complexities of a small farm as part of the community.

The soil and plants are modeled in detail to give you lots of stats to consider when planning. The weather is dynamic enough to put your plan to the test. As you go, you'll learn how to best use the benefits of the inter-connections between the systems, and how to overcome the challenges in front of you. The decisions you make to run your farm are meaningful because they continue to affect both your farm and the surrounding community for the long term.

~ Gameplay ~

You play as a local farmer trying to maintain a successful and sustainable farm. To do so, you'll have to make lots of decisions such as:

  • Types and quantities of plants to grow
  • What type of soil to place plants in
  • How to deal with unexpected extremes in weather
  • Do you use chemical products or keep things organic
  • When do you need to plant to ensure your harvest will be at the best time
  • How to manage soil fertility over the season
  • What type of business model you should use
  • Who will you sell goods to

Plotz encourages thoughtful planning, adaptation, and experimentation. There's no one right way to run your farm, as you'll choose your own long term goals. You might want to grow your farm as large as possible, make a ton of money, or specialize in the highest quality products.

~ Progress So Far ~

I've been working on Plotz for awhile already to prove out the basic concepts and get a feel for balancing the game. There's a public demo available. Give it a try to see what Plotz is all about. Some features you'll see in the demo:

  • A quick tutorial to help you get started
  • Your own small plot of land and all the tools you need to start farming
  • 12 unique garden crops and 2 cover crop varieties
  • Detailed soil model with substrate type, saturation, nutrient, and toxicity content
  • Dynamically balanced weather system
  • Soil microbes symbiotic with plants and soil
  • Chemical and organic fertilizers to help restore nutrients
  • Visualization tools to help you decide where to plant

~ Goals ~

To get from the demo to the fully featured game, I've grouped all of my ideas into 4 groups. The support I get from this KickStarter will allow me to work on the game full -time, and will pay for additional art assets.

~ Delivery ~

Plotz is made using Flash, so it'll be playable on Linux, Windows, and Mac. As expansions are completed they'll be sent out to all backers at the Game level or above. Beta level backers and above will get periodic updates of the game all along the way. Plotz will never have DRM or any other kludge. Source code will be available for free a couple of years after the game is complete so people can learn from it, mod it, or whatever.

Risks and challenges

* Bugs - No software is 100% bug-free but between my own diligence, some tester friends of mine, and the oh-so-lucky beta backers, nasty bugs should be kept to an appropriate minimum. I'll jump on any that get out the door as quickly as possible.

* Delays - A common issue for game development, there are endless things that can cause delayed releases. I've given my best estimates for when the additional content can be delivered, with plenty of buffer time factored in. I also develop new features so that there's as little disruption to existing functionality as possible. That way if one feature is late it doesn't have to hold back the entire release.

* Technical Difficulties - Technology changes, and isn't always as reliable as we'd like it to be. I don't control Adobe or The Internet or lots of other things that Plotz depends on to be successful. I'll certainly adapt to any challenge the best I can if things of this nature come up.
