'A book, you say? Now there's a good idea.'
Hi. My name's Dan, and this is my story.
Ever since I was a baby I have lived with an incredibly rare eye condition called Wyburn-Mason syndrome. It's so rare that less than 100 cases have been diagnosed in the USA. Ever. And there's very little information about it on the Web — truly an indication of just how rare it is.
Being blind in one eye has had its challenges: trying to be sporty at school, trying to learn how to drive and trying not to bump into people when walking round town.
During my 20s I started to notice that things were slowly changing, but had no idea why. And then just as I was about to turn 30, I discovered - purely by chance - that I had another incredibly rare illness.
Me, Myself and Eye tells the tale of living with these conditions in a funny, honest and thought-provoking way. It's a no-holds barred account of life as a mid-30s male.
A New Approach to Reading
Knowing that I had numerous scans, x-rays and hospital records, I wanted to somehow include them in the book. I know people still love to read traditional paper-based books, and I knew that including pictures into the book would send the print costs rocketing.
I then had a lightbulb moment: build a Web App!
As you're reading the book, you can access all the media available (including music, video and other images) through a website via your phone, computer or tablet.
Want to see an x-ray of my eye? Zoom in and see the details. Want to read the letters sent to me by my consultants? Open it up and read away!
For those who prefer their books digital, an eBook format is in developed too. The eBook will have images in the footnotes but additional content (video, music, image galleries etc) are accessed via the Web App.
Please note: To view images and media in the PDF version, use your phone/tablet/laptop. Simply go to bit.ly/MMEthebook_KSpreview. This will give you some idea of the experience for those reading the printed version.
How You Can Help
The first piece of good news is this: the book is written. You are therefore not funding a pipe-dream. The next few months are about getting everything ready for the launch. Your kind funding will help with the following:
★ Development of the Web App
★ Development of the eBook
★ Publishing and Printing
★ PR and Marketing
I have big hopes for Me, Myself and Eye. Having spoken to a couple of PR/Marketing gurus already, they think there could be real interest in not just my unique story but the way in which it is told, fusing the traditional printed word with new technologies.
Risks and challenges
As the book is written, there are no issues with the most important feature: the content. The next challenges are to get the Web App built, design and finalise the eBook and find the best solution for publishing, print and distribution. Then it's all about spreading the word.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
