Santa Monica Next will be a future focused news website examining a range of issues that will impact Santa Monica.

Santa Monica is debating issues right now that will impact the quality of life for generations to come. These include transportation, land use governance, open space, sustainable living to name a few.

We believe that advertising can make up a major portion of the funding for Santa Monica Next, but we also need the support of individual donors to kickstart and maintain this non-profit journalism project.

Streetsblog Los Angeles is moving all funds raised in Santa Monica to help fund the project and Bike Center is already Next’s first advertising sponsor. So we're off to a good start.

But, in addition to startup costs, we want to have funding for the first three months of publishing Santa Monica Next before our launch in late August/Early September. Some of that money we already have in the bank. But, we're not there yet. The more we raise, the more content we can publish.

The bulk of the articles will be written by Gary Kavanagh and edited by Damien Newton. Kavanagh is currently the "Santa Monica Columnist" for Streetsblog Los Angeles. Newton is the editor.

Kavanagh and Newton will be guided by an advisory board including Barbara Fillet, Meghan Kavanagh, Juan Matute, Sirinya Matute, Carter Rubin and Joni Yung.

Risks and challenges

There are two fears that every publisher and writer of professional online journals has.

The first is that nobody will read what they have to write. Second: that they run out of funding. I think a variation of these fears is held by every entrepreneur, be they non- or for- profit.

To address each of these problems, we have to be willing to adapt. When we launched Streetsblog Los Angeles in 2008 (and re-launched in 2010), we had an established brand to work with which brought a set of parameters in what we can and can't cover, a funding mechanism, and all the other things that come with working with a national organization.

We have a smaller version of that with Santa Monica Next. While Next will be a relative of Streetsblog, it won't be Streetsblog. While Kavanagh is a known quantity as a writer and advocate, Next will be more than Gary's (albeit exceptional) personal blog Gary Rides Bikes.

If we need to evolve a little more as writers, editors and an organization to attract the audience we want, or the sponsors that we need, we will.
