About this project

Vancouver, Canada - September 3rd & 4th, 2016

www.bloodcycleconference.com

Imagine a period that is predictable, cramp-free, and is sustainable for both your health and the environment - the painless period

Imagine a period that is treated as a source of information about the overall health and welfare of your body - the informative period

Imagine a period that is not at the brunt end of taboo, policy, or stigmatization - the respected period

Now imagine a world where all of these elements are automatically implied in the word "period"! The menstrual revolution is coming in a big red tidal wave, and this conference will build a network of people and products to encourage others to join in on the surf.

A two-day conference held in beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada will connect people from different avenues of menstrual activism: improving health, addressing taboo, improving access to menstrual products. It will serve as a bridge for those who wish to transform their menstrual experience from a negative, shameful and painful one, to a positive, vibrant, and healthy experience.

Why do we need a Blood Cycle Conference?

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Lara Briden (ND) (Twitter: @LaraBriden)

Lara Briden is a board certified Naturopathic Doctor. She qualified from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1997, and currently runs a busy hormone clinic in Sydney, Australia. Madeleine Shaw & Suzanne Siemens, Lunapads Founders

Madeleine Shaw and Suzanne Siemens are Vancouver-based social entrepreneurs known for their commitment to progressive business practices and gender equality. They are the co-founders of Lunapads International Ltd., a Vancouver-based company that specializes in sustainable alternatives to disposable menstrual products. Lunapads products are used by individuals in over 40 countries worldwide.

Since 1993, Lunapads has embraced a mission-based business practice by providing greener and more body-positive products, which include a fashion-conscious collection of washable pads and specialized underwear as well as reusable menstrual cups. Lunapads is also home to One4Her an in-house program that supports education for girls in developing nations.

Madeleine and Suzanne are also Directors of United Girls of the World, a registered non-profit society that supports girls’ empowerment globally. In 2013, they created G Day, a national community-based rite of passage celebration series that welcomes girls ages 10 to 12 into adolescence.

Jen Lewis, Beauty in Blood

Jen Lewis is the Conceptual Artist and Menstrual Designer behind Beauty in Blood, a bold, transformative macrophotography and video art project that confronts social taboos pertaining to menstruation and the female body. She received her B.A. in the History of Art from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 2001. Her work has been displayed in group exhibitions internationally, such as Women at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (US), Period Pieces at the Urban Artroom (Sweden), the 9th Annual Juried Art Show at The Kinsey Institute (US) and Art to Change the World at ArtPrize® (US). Jen curated a special theme exhibit for the joint conference of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research and the Center for Women’s Health and Human Rights entitled “Widening the Cycle: A Menstrual Cycle and Reproductive Justice Art Show” in June 2015. She currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado.

Bronwyn Simons, Vivid Menopause

Bronwyn Simons is a visual artist, writer, mother, community builder, priestess, dancer, visionary, and master of reinvention. The unifying thread in a life of constant creative change has been her work leading and mentoring women through art, dance, and spirituality. Vivid Menopause, created with Annagrace Kaye, is a labor of love and the culmination of decades of intimate circle work with women. Bronwyn says "It has been my privilege to spend my life so far mentoring women as we reclaim the power of our own stories, our own bodies, our own beauty." The Vivid Menopause Program includes live retreats, online programs, and Vivid Menopause Circles led by Vivid Menopause Mentors worldwide.

Topics:

  • Reproductive Health (contraception that doesn't involve endocrine-disruptors!)
  •  Dietary Health (how diet affects your cycle & how your cycle is an indicator of your overall health)
  •  Uterus Motility & Self-care Techniques (how movement is crucial for a healthy menstrual cycle and a happy uterus)
  • Access to menstrual hygiene in the Global South (how access to menstrual hygiene directly affects access to education)
  • Ceremonialism (cultivating a sacred, respectful relationship with one's cycle)
  • Menopause (reconceptualizing this time as a transition to be celebrated)
  • Art & Taboo (how artists are de-stigmatizing the period by highlighting its beauty)

This Kickstarter will not only help us fund the project, but also help us gauge interest. Every single contribution counts as a vote that "Yes, this conference needs to happen!" and backers will receive exclusive updates about the progress of the conference planning as well as practical tips on improving the menstrual cycle!

This project can't happen without Kickstarter backers. The budget of an event this scale is a big one and we are three individuals from around the world working together to put it on because we believe it's needed to further the menstrual movement.

Who We Are:

Lana Friesen, Vancouver, Canada

During Lana's studies at Simon Fraser University, she started her own company which involved teaching dance throughout the Lower Mainland, and producing shows of varying sizes. Over the course of two years, Lana's shows managed to successfully raise up to $5,000 for non-profits around the Lower Mainland including PACE Society, WAVAW, The Last Door, and RCAP. Lana's shows sometimes featured up to 75 performers selling out tickets to audiences of 300. Lana's professional interests shifted from a theatre arts focus to a health and wellness focus, and after a diagnosis of PCOS she became interested in healing herself and sharing the resources she's discovered with as many others as possible! Lana manages Sponsorship, Speaker, and Location Affairs.

Jennilyn Carson, New York, United States

Jennilyn has been a cycledork since she was a tween first intrigued by the magic of menstruation, but it wasn't until several years ago, when she started researching, investigating and tracking her own cycle - before apps! - that she realized there's so much more to know, and with that knowledge comes empowerment. She started cycledork.com as a period-positive space with an underlying mission to undo the taboo around menstruation. Prior to her efforts with BCC and Cycledork, she founded YogaDork.com, a website she built from the yoga mat up which has grown to over 100,000 followers and has earned her a profile in the New York Times, as well as features in other publications. Offline she is co-founder of TASCbar, an affordable and creative co-working space in East Harlem. She is also a birth doula, a volunteer cat rescuer, and a proud partner of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition. @jenniyoga, jennilyncarson.com

Sabrina Duventru, Paris, France

After completing her BA in Communications and her MA in Psychology, Sabrina has been working administrative roles for the past 5 years. She is passionate about how human beings can find well-being and embody it in their lives. She bought her first cup many years ago. Since then, her relationship with menstruation has changed for the better. She thinks that the BCC is an amazing opportunity to evolve common ideas about menstruation. Sabrina manages Administration.

Sophia Kreuzkamp, Vancouver, Canada

Sophia comes from a background of passion and activism. Over the years she found that her body had extreme side effects to the different types of hormonal contraceptives she used. After weighing her options she decided that the pros just didn't out weigh the cons for her, and has been embracing a synthetic chemical-free cycle since. She wants to broaden the conversation about the options we have when it comes to our body and encourage women to listen to what it is telling them. Sophia manages Outreach & Communication for BCC.

Risks and challenges

There are always risks associated with any big event, but we have positive contingency plans to assure the success of the conference. If a speaker can't make it due to unforeseen circumstances, we'll do everything possible to find a suitable speaker who can address the same topic. If for any reason sales are below expectations, there are expenses that can be trimmed if necessary for the event to go on. However, we're confident that with our Media Relations Guru, Jennilyn of Cycledork, we'll have enough sales to spoil our attendees with an outstanding conference.
