In Canada. received my copy earlier this week. Thanks! Excited to start reading it soon.

    2. John Szczepaniak Creator on

Thanks. But several of the now-published interviews were interpreted by the fine high-quality professionals from Active Gaming Media, such as the Game Arts interviews and Mr Kimura, or an independent language professor I hired (dB-SOFT). Others were retranslations (by various people thanked in acknowledgements). I won't mention the name due to data mining, but without the ongoing retranslation work from one professional I hired, there would have been no book. This individual helped save the project. Said person has their work cut out for them, for volumes 2 and 3.

My Gold edition just landed in Australia today! :D

Geebus the amount of info (and interviews!) is amazing. How you managed to retranscribe some of those interviews after the translator mess is just short of insane xD

I'll be waiting for volume 2 myself! :D

    4. Sean Renshaw on

Received my Gold Edition in the mail yesterday. I've only just started (about half way though the Eguchi interview) but I am loving the book so far. I can't wait for the next volumes!

    5. Matt Mayatt on

Thats cool John, looking forward to purchasing the next volumes :)

    6. Colonel Skills on

Canada here, my Gold book arrived today.

Absolutely nuts amount of content; thanks a lot John. Super happy with it so far.

    7. John Szczepaniak Creator on

With this first volume I gave backers more than I originally promised in terms of page count and interviewees (526 + 36 compared to a minimum of 300 + 30). This first volume constitutes the entirety of the backer rewards. The only reason I didn't put everything in volume 1 is because it was physically impossible.

I'm sorry if you misunderstood or I was unclear on how the book would be. I did a search of the project pages and couldn't find the specific example, but I recall someone asking about this point, prior to the campaign ending, and I spoke about the differences in CreateSpace prices for colour and black & white. I would have loved to print in colour, but it would have made the printing costs five times more expensive.

    8. Minoru TODA on

      Arrived in Japan today :)

    9. Damian Butt on

Shame, I thought it was going to be in colour - did I miss that in the original pitch?

    10. Matt Mayatt on

Just a quick question, what happens with the other volumes, have we bought those already or will we have to purchase them?

    11. Matt Mayatt on

Sorry cheers John, Chris was another Kickstarter entirely :)

    12. Matt Mayatt on

Got my book the other day, cheers Chris.

    14. Mike Jones on

Got mine yesterday. Looks awesome. I've only had a chance to skim read a few pages so far. Looking forward to getting deep in to it over a coffee.

      Nice work John.

    15. JS on

      Got my book today.

    16. Matt Mayatt on

Still no show for mine or my nephews, you would have thought living in the UK we would have got ours a bit quicker than this.

    17. John Szczepaniak Creator on

      The DVD is available here:

The book itself will be available to everyone, via Amazon, towards the end of August.

    18. Fabio Santana on

Hey John! Got mine today and, upon publishing about it in my social profiles, people got very interested in buying the book. Do you have plans to make it available (and the DVDs too) for the general public? Could you detail?

Thanks and congratulations on the amazing work!

Got my book today, sadly it was damaged in shipping, could've used much better packaging imo.

    20. Zeon

Yeah!!! got my book today, minor dent in it from shipping but everything else is good

    21. Harley Gresham on

Hey John, just changed my postal address on Kickstarter, hope that you get the changes! Cheers, Looking forward to the book!

    22. John Szczepaniak Creator on

The names are taken from there. Your name is listed just fine. :)

    23. Ross Foubister on

I checked for a survey, and I completed one in February, but that was only for a postal address. Are the names in the book taken from there, or is there a separate survey that I've missed?

    24. Mayhem on

Had a chance to finally watch pt1 of the DVD. Cracking stuff there, especially the Deco system. I guess with my preservation bent, it caught my eye heh. And no skipping, so the surface scratches were only superficial.

Is it common practice to actually do a "FAQ" style information on a Libel case on a blog? o_O

I had assumed posting up details such as those on that "FAQ" in a public place would normally screw over court proceedings.... and why in the world is the court case in France when John is a resident of UK?

      I sense something dodgy =/

    26. Mayhem on

The rest of the email states (for the record, as it is cut off):

      - Your comments on “The Untold History of Japanese Video Games” Kickstarter project page, in original English and French translation
      - Your company affiliation and job title
      - The record of your visit(s) to the LinkedIn profile of Agness Kaku and/or Hanako Kaku Abe, if any

If you wish to make an official statement about this matter, please do so before June 5, 2014 to allow for third-party translation into French before the June 12 hearing.

The plaintiffs and their families regret any upset caused by this notice. A brief outline of the case and an FAQ can be found here:

    27. Robert Hazelby on

Evening John, I've just checked my email, and it seems that yesterday afternoon I received a similar email via my LinkedIn profile from Peter Daimu.

      The email reads:

      Dear Robert Hazelby,

This is a courtesy notice of your inclusion in the victim impact documentation filed with the Criminal Court of Niort as a part of a libel case against Jon “John” Szczepaniak of Saint-Laurs, France regarding his false and malicious statements about Haruko Ota, Hanako Abe (née Kaku) and Agness Kaku (Kickstarter updates dated November 22, 2013; January 17, 2014; and March 13, 2014). No action is required on your part.

The purpose of this filing is to demonstrate to the court that Mr. Szczepaniak:

      - Defamed the plaintiffs to an audience that has a significant share of professionals from industries in which the plaintiffs works, including but not limited to video games and IT.
      - Successfully manipulated and encouraged backers into joining in the libel with reckless disregard for the professional, emotional and physical well-beings of the plaintiffs.

The information presented to the court consists of:

      - Your name
      - Your comments on “The Untold History of Japanese Video Games”...

Peter's LinkedIn profile points to this lengthy blog:

      Just thought you should know.

John, I thought you should be aware that my LinkedIn profile got a visit today by a Peter Daimu and he sent me a message regarding a litigation. His profile had a link to this blog page:

Great job on the DVD John! I'm hoping this first edition takes off so you can make another of these gems w/ a bigger budget :D

Jon, regarding the index (update 50 not visible here for some reason?) - as long as there is a good contents page and topic/interview headings so people can find something, I'm not worried about an index. Just make sure your footnotes and text point out subjects that go across interviews e.g. (See also interview with someone, or read more in the chapter about company)

Alex - That website is filled with nothing but disgusting lies, and is a blatant attempt at character assassination by two con-artists who fleeced me in Japan and are now upset that I dared to reveal the truth publicly. They either twisted everything I said or outright lied. There is not a shred of truth in anything they say, and I have the emails, signed invoices, and audio recordings to prove it. If this persists, I will be forced to reveal every single thing in public in order to defend myself. Agness' husband Peter contacted me, and I repeatedly offered them an olive branch - I wanted peace. I said if they walk away and leave me alone, I will do the same. He refused. This, in addition to contacting all of my interviewees, is utterly disgraceful behaviour.

Definitely hope I can get a DVD via HG101 or somehow. I really regret not backing at the DVD level.

Yeah man i would have been happy for you to keep the cash instead of refunding , is there anyway to give the the money back.

Aww sorry to hear about the digital version. It doesn't seem fair the amount of trouble you are getting!

*looks for the "reject refund" button*

    49. John Szczepaniak Creator on

The DVD will be on sale by itself. I'll probably set-up a page on HG101 and allow PayPal payments for any leftover copies I have.
