Recieved book, somewhat unimpressed with print quality and layout.

    4. Mike Jones on August 16, 2014

Got mine yesterday. Looks awesome. I've only had a chance to skim read a few pages so far. Looking forward to getting deep in to it over a coffee.

      Nice work John.

    5. JS on August 14, 2014

      Got my book today.

    6. Matt Mayatt on August 12, 2014

Still no show for mine or my nephews, you would have thought living in the UK we would have got ours a bit quicker than this.

    7. John Szczepaniak Creator on August 6, 2014

      The DVD is available here:

The book itself will be available to everyone, via Amazon, towards the end of August.

    8. Fabio Santana on August 4, 2014

Hey John! Got mine today and, upon publishing about it in my social profiles, people got very interested in buying the book. Do you have plans to make it available (and the DVDs too) for the general public? Could you detail?

Thanks and congratulations on the amazing work!

The names are taken from there. Your name is listed just fine. :)

    13. Ross Foubister on June 1, 2014

I checked for a survey, and I completed one in February, but that was only for a postal address. Are the names in the book taken from there, or is there a separate survey that I've missed?

    14. Mayhem on May 31, 2014

Had a chance to finally watch pt1 of the DVD. Cracking stuff there, especially the Deco system. I guess with my preservation bent, it caught my eye heh. And no skipping, so the surface scratches were only superficial.

Is it common practice to actually do a "FAQ" style information on a Libel case on a blog? o_O

I had assumed posting up details such as those on that "FAQ" in a public place would normally screw over court proceedings.... and why in the world is the court case in France when John is a resident of UK?

      I sense something dodgy =/

    16. Mayhem on May 28, 2014

The rest of the email states (for the record, as it is cut off):

      - Your comments on “The Untold History of Japanese Video Games” Kickstarter project page, in original English and French translation
      - Your company affiliation and job title
      - The record of your visit(s) to the LinkedIn profile of Agness Kaku and/or Hanako Kaku Abe, if any

If you wish to make an official statement about this matter, please do so before June 5, 2014 to allow for third-party translation into French before the June 12 hearing.

The plaintiffs and their families regret any upset caused by this notice. A brief outline of the case and an FAQ can be found here:

    17. Robert Hazelby on May 28, 2014

Evening John, I've just checked my email, and it seems that yesterday afternoon I received a similar email via my LinkedIn profile from Peter Daimu.

      The email reads:

      Dear Robert Hazelby,

This is a courtesy notice of your inclusion in the victim impact documentation filed with the Criminal Court of Niort as a part of a libel case against Jon “John” Szczepaniak of Saint-Laurs, France regarding his false and malicious statements about Haruko Ota, Hanako Abe (née Kaku) and Agness Kaku (Kickstarter updates dated November 22, 2013; January 17, 2014; and March 13, 2014). No action is required on your part.

The purpose of this filing is to demonstrate to the court that Mr. Szczepaniak:

      - Defamed the plaintiffs to an audience that has a significant share of professionals from industries in which the plaintiffs works, including but not limited to video games and IT.
      - Successfully manipulated and encouraged backers into joining in the libel with reckless disregard for the professional, emotional and physical well-beings of the plaintiffs.

The information presented to the court consists of:

      - Your name
      - Your comments on “The Untold History of Japanese Video Games”...

Peter's LinkedIn profile points to this lengthy blog:

      Just thought you should know.

Jon, regarding the index (update 50 not visible here for some reason?) - as long as there is a good contents page and topic/interview headings so people can find something, I'm not worried about an index. Just make sure your footnotes and text point out subjects that go across interviews e.g. (See also interview with someone, or read more in the chapter about company)

Alex - That website is filled with nothing but disgusting lies, and is a blatant attempt at character assassination by two con-artists who fleeced me in Japan and are now upset that I dared to reveal the truth publicly. They either twisted everything I said or outright lied. There is not a shred of truth in anything they say, and I have the emails, signed invoices, and audio recordings to prove it. If this persists, I will be forced to reveal every single thing in public in order to defend myself. Agness' husband Peter contacted me, and I repeatedly offered them an olive branch - I wanted peace. I said if they walk away and leave me alone, I will do the same. He refused. This, in addition to contacting all of my interviewees, is utterly disgraceful behaviour.

The DVD will be on sale by itself. I'll probably set-up a page on HG101 and allow PayPal payments for any leftover copies I have.

      Hi John,

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but will there be a way to obtain the DVD outside of the initial backing. I backed the book, but seeing the content now I would love to give more for the amazing footage. I'm sure I'm not the only one either. It seems too good to pass up. Thanks! Keep up the awesome work.

I backed this project and somehow managed to either miss or forget the fact that you're also behind Hardcore Gaming 101, which is in my opinion one of the most useful and informative video game-related sites on the internet. So, I'd like to leave my sincere gratitude on top of my contribution.

As for my question, I was wondering whether you had any contacts with developers who have worked with or still work with FROM or Atlus. You have an impressive amount of information on their titles on the website so I feel like an interview on King's Field or one of the old Shin Megami Tenseis would not go to waste with you. Of course, the content you've already promised is looking to be fantastic, but I thought it would be worth asking!

    45. John Szczepaniak Creator on August 1, 2013

Apologies for not posting a proper update yet. I got back from my trip, and immediately started working 14 hours days to clear my backlog of emails, and sort out some newer arrangements. So many contacts to process - it's unbelievable. Plus the equipment. Yesterday I received my Olympus AS2400 transcription kit, for easy transcribing. I've not even had time to test it with my new laptop or Sony dictation machine (digital all the way - none of that magnetic analogue recording nonsense). I did test the dictation machine, and it puts my old microtape one to shame. Lots of new contacts, but I'm just going to say: Quintet fans should be happy. I've not solved the mystery (yet), but if this goes ahead, it'll be quite excellent nonetheless.

A proper update when (if) I ever get the time.

    46. John Szczepaniak Creator on July 16, 2013

Don't worry about that. I know all the names of the games I will talk about, and I intend to provide my interpreter with a fact sheet briefly detailing each interviewee and their career. For clarity I would use the Japanese names during the interview, and either convert them into English in the book, or include a footnote explaining that each time myself and the interview say Rockman, we actually mean Megaman.

    47. Samuel Cal Engel on July 14, 2013

I have a question: When games get translated the names of characters, settings, items, locations and so on change. For example megaman actually being rockman in japanese. So how are you going to avoid communication problems concerning those changes? Do you search for the original japanese names before doing an interview? Are your interpreters specialized in gaming so that they know the translations? Or do the developers themselfes know the english translations usually?
