Stretch Goal: If we can get to $70,000 we will have enough extra to revamp the sound system. One of the things we constantly battle is balancing the sound effects, music, and dialog so that each comes through clearly. If we had a little extra cash to modernize the audio gear it would make for a much more complete upgrade project. We are so close to our main goal, lets put it over the top and make the sound great too.
Here at Central Cinema, we are committed to bringing you quality films ranging from Citizen Kane to Howard The Duck, but as we move into the future of theater projection we need to convert our theater to DCP. DCP stands for Digital Cinema Package. It is the new standard in movie projection and by 2014 all major movie studios will only deliver films in DCP. Right now, two major studios are only doing DCP screenings which means there are tons of great movies that we would love to screen but cannot. Crowd favorites include:
Alien & Aliens
Adventures In Babysitting
Mannequin 2: On The Move (Jason's favorite)
Sister Act & Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit
The Last Of The Mohicans
Return To Oz
and hundreds more!
Central Cinema's KICKSTARTER campaign is to raise the funds to convert our theater to DCP, and we need your help to make this a reality. State of the art digital projectors are expensive, and we would have to save up for a long time to afford the equipment we need. The trouble is that we need to do this in the next six months before Hollywood shuts off the supply of non-DCP movies. If you can help us get over the hump with the new projector then we will bust our butts to make the shows that much better for you.
Reward Update: A YEAR OF MOVIES pass is now TWO YEARS OF MOVIES. We felt the passes needed to be balanced better with the punchcard rewards so we extended their time. We are willing to pay the movie fees over time if we can raise the money now for the project. Don't worry if you have already picked up a Year of Movies Pass, it will automatically be upgraded to Two Years of Movies.
A DCP system will also take the picture and sound quality of our shows to the next level. Whether it's a screening of a Technicolor Classic, a Cult Favorite, or one of our own Sing-Along events, the new systems will make everything more gorgeous on the screen. Brighter brights and vibrant colors all smothered in delicious caramel!
Here at Central Cinema we love movies, and we love watching them with friends while yummy food and great drinks are brought by the wonderful servers. We started Central Cinema to bring more fun to the CD neighborhood. For the past eight years we have used our scrappy ingenuity to build our own DIY movie system for getting the show on the screen. In fact we built the whole place ourselves on the bones of our old art studio. It has been great fun building a totally home-made movie theater, but now it is time to go big and take the Cinema to the next level.
Central Cinema continues to support the local community with projects such as the Central District Holiday Party, high school student Mia Roberson's senior project, The Black & Beautiful Film Festival and the Central District Garden Tour. We look forward to continuing special events such as these and screening all the movies that you want to see!
What We Need
We have been talking with Miles McRae over at McRae Theater Equipment in Fremont. Miles got us going with our first screen eight years ago as an upgrade from showing movies on the wall. If you want a person who can set you up right, Miles is the guy to talk to. We have our eye on a Barco projector and a DCP digital media storage block. If we are able to raise any extra money we have our eyes on a Datasat(nee DTS) digital audio processor and some other sound system upgrades that will really make the room sing. There will also be a number of cables and support bits to hook everything together. The new projector is significantly larger than what we have so we will need to construct a new support and housing to fit it. We will also need to pay Miles for his time to connect and configure everything into a cohesive system. We have determined that a fundraising effort of $60,000 plus what we are kicking in will buy us the ideal system to fit Central Cinema for all of the different types of events that happen here.
Please help us meet this goal so we can expand our repertoire and continue making our unique brand of entertainment for you.
Risks and challenges
If we do not make our funding goal then we will have to find another way of making the DCP conversion happen. In the current economy the banks are still quite hard to work with and equipment lease deals are approaching usury. An upgrade of this size is too large to put on our line of credit and credit card rates are out of the question. We may be able to work out a loan arrangement eventually but the best option is still to have the fans of the Cinema help us with this Kickstarter.
Currently there is a backlog of orders for DCP systems as independent theaters everywhere are being pushed to upgrade all at the same time. The sooner we can get an equipment order put in the better shape we will be for getting a timely delivery.
We will need to build a new support and housing since the new projector is much larger and heavier than our current one. Making sure the housing is built to the right size before the projector arrives will have to be carefully coordinated to make sure there are no surprises when we go to put the new gear inside.
The changeover will be a complicated dance as we will try to keep the theater open as much as possible during the installation. We may not be able to have both our old and new systems in operation simultaneously so we may need to close briefly while everything is tuned and tested. Careful planning of how each piece interconnects will keep this as smooth as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
