Stretch Goal #1- Radiotopia Expansion Pack

Thanks to you, we hit our goal and Radiotopia has the base of support we need to keep going strong. We’re still looking to clinch our $25,000 challenge grant from Hover by getting 20,000 backers, but we have new plans we want to share.

This year we’ve already achieved so much. But now we have the opportunity to do so much more. We’re on a mission to remake public radio into the best form of itself.

According to the popular podcast app Stitcher, as of February 2013, only 20% of the top 100 podcasts are hosted by women. That percentage is abysmal and we need give more opportunities for female-fronted podcasts to find their audience.

Therefore, when we get over $400,000, we’d like to invite three new shows – all hosted by women – into Radiotopia. This move addresses the need for better gender parity both on the broadcast airwaves and in the more tech-y world of podcasting. Our collective has proven to successfully grow audience and revenue for our members, so we think we can help. These are amazing shows that fit our Radiotopia aesthetic (i.e. shows we are extremely proud to recommend) and will make us more successful as a collective.

The shows:

  • Soon-to-be-titled Helen Zaltzman words and language program(me)– Created by Helen Zaltzman, host of the popular UK show “Answer Me This,” this brand new program peels back the surface of language to find out why we say the things we say.
  • “The Heart” – A show about the triumphs and the terrors of human intimacy, the bliss and banality of being in love and the wild diversity of the human heart. Hosted by Kaitlin Prest.
  •  “Criminal” – Riveting true crime stories about being wronged, doing wrong, and being caught in the middle. Hosted by Phoebe Judge and produced by Eric Mennel and Lauren Spohrer.

With these additions to our roster, Radiotopia will have a 50/50 host gender balance.

At $400,000, we can green light all of these programs and make Radiotopia better than ever. If you support our mission, please spread the word, and you can even increase your pledge, if you’re so inclined!

Can't wait to hear the new shows and chat about them to my new pen pal.

Pledge increased! Helen's show sounds awesome, as does Criminal. Hope this happens.

I don't think gender equality is the same thing as statistical balance and to try and force statistical balance and pass it off as gender equality is kind of a facade. Am sure all three of those shows are great and I hope they do well, however I'm slightly disheartened to hear that your adding female voices simply so you can reach an artificial 50/50 metric. In the future I hope you will add shows based on quality regardless of gender.
(PS I love all of RT's female hosts and subscribe to them all.)

I uped my pledge from $150 to $200 to make this happen. Gender equality starts with men. #Standup.

Great to see a plan to add international players to the stable.

Ok. Let me try this again, again. Have been listening to Criminal for a whole now and I love it. Not sure I can handle too much more love and intimacy in my podcast feed though. Leah's Love Hurts series had me crying, laughing and calling her with words of support. Will up my pledge and have the kids each pledge to help with the $20k challenge. Thank you for making my world a little better.

I tripled my pledge for this. Please bring more women and people of color into the host's chair!

Thank you!! I've been listening to CRIMINAL and I love it!!

Criminal is a great cast, and the Helen Zaltzman show sounds like one I'd be all over as well. Very exciting.

PRX - Sweet. Please know that I'm 100% supportive of what you're / we're building here. Keep up the great work.

I agree, Steve. We're actively working on that problem too.

    22. Steve Ciabattoni on October 24, 2014

I think this is a great goal, and you should be very proud of what you've created. Longtime supporter... However. I was really struck by the lack of cultural diversity of the hosts (and of the crowd at the NYC Kickstarter kickoff party.) Radiotopia could only benefit from having a broader variety of voices. Sincerely, white guy in his 40s. :-)
