99% Invisible, Season 4: Weekly Episodes
You're getting this message because you've already generously supported our efforts. You've done your part. You are our champions. We only exist because you made it possible.
If you'd like to pitch in again, we've got some exciting plans that you can make a reality...
A little more than a year ago, 99% Invisible was a side project that I did in my bedroom at night. I had been making the show for two years when, in 2012, I turned to Kickstarter to see if I should keep it going. To my great surprise, the Season 3 fund-raising campaign broke all previous records for a journalism project on Kickstarter. Since then, I hired a producer (Sam Greenspan!), and together we've grown our audience, and made the show better than it has ever been.
For Season 4, we want to Kickstart the next giant leap in the evolution of 99% Invisible:
We want to go weekly.
We're staffing up and going pro. This involves hiring more help (contract reporters, editors, a production coordinator, paid interns), moving into a proper office, and commissioning more stories.
Our dream is to hire Sean Cole as a monthly contributor. Not only is he the best reporter in public radio, he also produced one of our favorite 99% Invisible stories, "Some Other Sign That People Do Not Totally Regret Life."
For our Season 4 fund-raiser, we have some of the coolest prizes of all time.
We've got a brand-new shirt from Chop Shop with our show's mantra...
"Always Read the Plaque" t-shirt
...And one that will keep you from ever getting torpedoed again
"Razzle Dazzle" t-shirt
Plus we have some amazing posters from the incredibly talented artists Steve McCarthy and Stephen Wildish.
"99% Invisible Map of the City" poster by Steve McCarthy
"Designer" poster by Stephen Wildish (whom you may remember from last year's "Architecture Alphabet poster"--which is also available again in this campaign!)
If we make our goal, The 52 weekly episodes of season 4 will start February 4, 2014 and run for one year.
We are making a new kind of public radio in a new way. I must admit, after the huge success and growth of the show in the last year, I thought the public radio decision-makers and granting institutions would really get behind 99% Invisible, but they are slow to act. It's OK, their deliberate nature is part of why we love them, but it means it is up to you to tell us if we should expand and make more. This is as public as public radio gets.
Just like last time, any amount matters to us. I get excited for every pledge: from $1 to $10,000. We're looking for backers to contribute only they can. That's what makes public radio great. Join us in changing public radio for the better.
