About this project

INTRODUCTION

Of all the forms available to us, the most efficient forms come from nature, whether that be in the molecular shape of a diamond or, yes, a soap film. Soap films are exquisitely beautiful forms because they redistribute curvature equally throughout their shape. However as a consequence they also equally redistribute the structural forces that run through their surface to create the form. If one could take advantage of these as-yet untapped structural capacities it could revolutionize the way we build.

Unfortunately, nature's shapes are not that easy to construct from standard building materials. No architect has yet managed to use the shape of a soap bubble to create a unique architectural enclosure, nor have they managed to support a human's weight. But in recent years, what began as a personal interest blossomed into a solution for the riddle of unique soap film sculpting, as demonstrated with an actual bubble model.

しかし、自然界で派生する形状を標準的な建築資材を使って構築するのは容易ではありません。石けん膜形状の能力を利用した建築構造や人間の重みを支える製品を作ることに成功した建築家は、現在のところ皆無です。私は軽い好奇心を持ってこの石けん膜形状の難題に取り組み始めました。それから数年たった今日、ついに、このシャボン玉モデルを使って、解決法をお見せすることができます。

THIS PROJECT

I am building a chair in the shape of soap bubbles to bridge the gap from promising concept to eventual realization in architectural form. The chair will be the first fabricated object to use the shape of a soap bubble to support a human's weight. The chair will also make use of the recognizable four legged scheme to demonstrate the ability to sculpt these sophisticated mathematical forms at will.

CURRENT STATUS and WHERE THE CONTRIBUTIONS WILL GO

In order to construct these complex shapes that are always bending in two different directions at every place, I must raise money to purchase expensive computer controlled fabrication tools, such as 3-D printers and laser cutters. After a few more rounds of developing the optimal shape of the chair that creates the most comfortable yet functional form, I will be ready to begin fabrication tests., before moving on to construct the first prototype.

    This 3-dimensional model will depict the chair in actual soapy water. Rather than see the shape in plastic, the form of the chair will emerge once the model is dunked in soapy water, much like a child's toy.

    Solid Model Subscription.

    As the design progresses from its current shape to final form, I will send updated solid models with the latest improvements. Once I have finalized the design, the subscription will posit a couple of additional speculative schemes for a chair in the shape of a soap bubble since there are many more possibilities than just the common four legged scheme. The subscription will begin with the large solid model offered above and will include at least 3 subsequent solid models. Plus, the bubble model, the PDF Booklet and all 3 renderings.
