New stretch goal, $30,000

We reached our Kickstarter goal, wooHOOO! Thank you all for sowing your generosity, we are thrilled and grateful to be sharing our work and seeds with all of you.

We have until the night of July 17th to reach our stretch goal of $30,000.

The additional funding will help us put a down payment on a critical piece of seed cleaning equipment called a “Clipper Office Tester.” This machine will allow us to spend more time working with our crops in the fields to ensure we provide the best organic seed for our region.

SOW WHAT?

Seeds are the foundation of the food we eat, the clothing we wear, and indeed of everything. Yet there is a global systemic crisis in how our seeds are selected, bred, owned and distributed.

When you pledge to our Kickstarter you are helping us complete our organic seed cleaning facility and warehouse, as well as contributing to the broader social, environmental, political and economic issues surrounding seed.  Not to mention you will receive our seeds that can make organic gardening easier and more successful!

DID YOU KNOW  ABOUT THE SEED CRISIS?

  • Chemical companies have concentrated the ownership of the majority of the global seed supply, treating seed as just another commodity.  Genetic patenting (including hybrids and GMO) has turned seed into ‘non-renewable resources’ for farmers who can no longer save their own seed.
  • The world has lost 75% of the genetic diversity in our food crops in the the last 100 years (study from: United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization).  Each time we lose a variety of a seed, a food crop becomes extinct.  As crop diversity diminishes our plants lose the ability to adapt to climate change, pests and disease.
  • Very few seed companies sell seed grown in the Northeast.  Those that do offer only of a fraction of regionally grown seed, the rest purchased from around the country and world.
  • Today most seed is conventionally produced for "wide adaptation."  These seeds grow “good enough” in some regions, but may not excel in any of those places; especially not the Northeast.

OUR RESPONSE...SOW FRUITION!

Many seeds developed to excel in our region have been discarded in favor of "good enough" because no one took a stand to preserve them... until now!

We provide organic, regionally adapted seed grown in and for the Northeast, making organic growing easier and more successful.

THE BENEFITS OF OUR SEEDS!

  • Make organic gardening easier and you more successful  because our seeds were grown in the Northeast and selected to thrive in our regional growing conditions.
  • Taste amazing!  We select for taste, otherwise what's the point?
  • Increase diversity by growing and breeding organic, open-pollinated (non-patentable) seed.
  • Reclaim our seed heritage and share knowledge rather than concentrate ownership in the hands of a few.
  • Support non-GMO, non-hybrid seed so the money you spend on seed goes to farmers, not chemical companies.
  • Connect with the network of the best organic seed growers in our region to inspire a new direction of seed growth and distribution in the Northeast.
  • Know your farmer; know your seeds!  Know where each seed was grown and by what farm for complete transparency within the seed industry.

THE ROLE YOU CAN PLAY

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”   -Buckminster Fuller-

Join us!  Thank you for making a pledge and helping create a new model for how our seeds are grown, owned and distributed.  Sow the seeds of resilience!

With continued and boundless gratitude,

Petra & Matthew

WITH YOUR PLEDGE WE WILL ACCOMPLISH:

We are using the funds to finish our warehouse facility that will include space for seed cleaning, storage, germination testing, seed packing, inventory and a small office.

This will allow us to properly handle all our seeds and ensure the highest quality seeds from the field to your garden.  Once the warehouse is completed we will begin shipping seeds to our Kickstarter backers so you can still get late summer and fall plantings in the ground.

Meet some of our seed growers: Transparency of where and how our seeds are grown:

The alternative to corporate control of the seed supply is respect, knowledge and transparency and is based in regional seed breeding, selection and production.  We grow over forty of the varieties of seed on our farm in Naples and Branchport, NY.  The remaining sixty varieties are grown by our network of certified organic seeds growers throughout the Northeast (Montreal, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York) that we admire and respect.  When you search for seeds on our website you can easily search either by crop type or by the farm that produced the seed.  This way- you can know where each seed was grown, in what climate and under what organic growing methods.

Risks and challenges

We know that there will be obstacles to overcome and plans to correct. The primary challenge we may face even if our project is funded is all about weather, weather, weather. Each season presents weather variables that we cannot control. Droughts can lead to water shortages, limited irrigation and exacerbate certain pest populations. Extended, wet and humid conditions increase the incidence of disease. Somewhere in-between is the ideal, but rarely the case.

We have a number of organic and management practices in place to deal with these issues as they arise. Because of the crop diversity between our two farms (over 60 varieties) we may lose several crops to any number of reasons, but others will thrive in that exact same situation. This way we hedge our bets to ensure we have a wide variety of seed to offer the following year.

Additionally, with our collaborations with other seed growers in the region, even if one of them loses a couple of crops, others will have had success on their farm; therefore we will still have a large selection to offer our customers throughout the season.

We are asking you to join us in not only in creating organic seeds for our region, but also an adventure in building a truly resilient seed company.

Thank you again for your interest and support.

Petra and Matthew
