About this project
A psychological thriller about a man who, upon waking up in a vast desert, chained inside a school bus, must follow a trail of clues to answer the mystery of his identity.
The film travels back in time through his fragmented memories piecing together the story that’s brought him to this hell. An affair. A crash. A murder. The mystery of a missing teenage girl….
A visual journey through one man’s mental landscape.
Notes from the producers:
This year we plan to shoot FOLLOWING FIVE BUT PRECEDING SEVEN, a feature film written and to be directed by Ruben Latre. Having never done a Kickstarter campaign before, we chose to test out the process by trying to raise money for one MAJOR prop needed for the film, a second hand rear engine school bus.
The video above, written, directed, shot, edited and sound designed by Ruben, is comprised of shots from previous film projects he's directed, as well as original footage, solely for this campaign. Since we have not started shooting the film yet, we chose to make a video that would tell you a bit about Ruben while showcasing his visual style. It is meant to represent Ruben's background in a way only he can express...
FOLLOWING FIVE BUT PRECEDING SEVEN FILM WEBSITE
Hostage Films has been producing commercials and short film projects in the United States and abroad for the past four years for clients including Samsung, Abbott Fund, Verizon, and Pfizer. We have worked on projects with 50+ crew and projects where Ruben has been dropped in remote locations like the Amazon jungle and the Ethiopian highlands and worked as a single person crew, shooting two cameras and audio himself.
During this time, we have simultaneously been developing film projects, creating the opportunity for a first feature film for director Ruben Latre.
Now, we have it in our grasp. FOLLOWING FIVE BUT PRECEDING SEVEN, a Ruben Latre film, predominately takes place in a single location with a single actor. In terms of execution, this makes our production straightforward. We are shooting on the Bonneville Salt Flats, so our window for shooting is determined by the weather/accessibility.
We will shoot this film for 6 days in April on the east coast, where Hostage Films is located, and then, have our main 27 day shoot in Utah from June 12 through July 12.
As mentioned above, we are used to working in challenging climates and at any budget level. What we never compromise on is quality. For Ruben Latre and Hostage Films, everything we do is made to the best of our ability, putting visual aesthetic and emotional evocation at the forefront. We hope this link to his work shows that clearly.
Ruben Latre is a director whose work cannot help but stir your soul, even his commercial work, for advertisers, selling products. When you unleash his potential through a narrative feature, the results will be tremendous.
Our audience awaits.

Risks and challenges
Our hope is that the total film budget will be reached through a combination of equity investors, production company partners, in-kind services, grants and contributions from friends and family.
Worst case scenario, Ruben ends up as a one person crew - just himself and the actor in the desert (as it was with most of the footage from our crowdfunding video). We are fully prepared for that scenario, but are working our damnedest to get a little support :) We will, for sure, need a bus! Thank you in advance for your contribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
