A book of forty-five new variety cryptic crosswords constructed by some of the world's best logophiles (lovers of words).
There just aren't enough cryptic crosswords out there. And that goes double when looking for variety cryptics. So how are we going to fix that? With a "gnarly skater trick (11)", of course.
The goal of this project is to produce to the first in a series of variety cryptic books. Most of the funds raised in this campaign will go directly to the purchasing of puzzles. The rest will be spent in publishing two versions of the book. The first will be a solver-friendly, coil-bound version published exclusively for Kickstarter backers. The second will be a less-expensive, perfect bound version published as a print-on-demand title available online at Amazon. If successful, online sales will be used to fund the next volume of puzzles.
Everyone who funds this project at the $5 level will be rewarded with a pair of color-changing pencils to remember this Kickstarter campaign by as a small token of our appreciation. You will also receive one sample puzzle, to be delivered electronically.
Pledging at the $25 level gets you the entire book in electronic form. You can receive it as a .pdf file and/or an interactive and solvable Puzzazz ebook. Puzzazz puzzle ebooks are currently available for all iPhones and iPads, and for Android and Windows 8 sometime in the future.
Now everyone does receive the pencils, but they won't do for solving the eBook. Pledge at least $40 and you also receive the paper version of the book, within which you will find your name in the acknowledgments section. This book will be coil-bound, wonderful for solving and exclusively available to Kickstarter funders.
Pledging at least $65 is where things start to get exciting: a specially designed color-changing mug (note the consistent theme) that has a cryptic clue written on it. When the mug is filled with hot liquid, the answer appears. Things don't get much cooler (uh, hotter) than that.
Unless of course, you would like to be thanked personally for your contribution. Pledge at least $100 and we will send your book with a thank-you note. We will also throw in a signed copy of "50 Variety Cryptic Crosswords." I'll also give you a call to thank you in person.
Pledge at least $200 and your copy will be signed by the constructors. This is a truly unique gift for the cryptic lover.
Pledge at least $500 and your name will appear in a special "Executive Producer" acknowledgement section of the book. Also, you will receive 5 additional copies of the book. Just think of that -- 225 additional puzzles!
We've compiled a venerable list of the who's who of cryptic crosswords to contribute to this project. With hundreds of combined years of cryptic construction, we have
Henry Hook, Bob Stigger, Mike Selinker, David Ellis Dickerson, Joshua Kosman, Kevin Wald, Mark Gottlieb, Roy Leban, Mark Halpin, Hayley Gold, Roger Wolff, Todd Rew
and others all lined up and just waiting for this project to be successfully funded to start making puzzles.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Collaboration between so many constructors, each with their own busy calendars, takes a lot of time. We expect to complete the project in time for the holidays. But if necessary, we will delay the project to prioritize quality of the puzzles over timeliness of completion. We don't foresee the project completing any later than early 2014.
Other than that, we don't see any major risks. Together, the authors have centuries of constructing and editing experience. Many authors have had book publishing experience, including self-publishing.
