What do you get when you take a Gospel singing, Jesus loving, song writing, people hugging woman on vacation to India where she develops doubts, starts asking questions and suffers a rather severe bout of spiritual schizophrenia? This CD project!
There, you have to admit you're curious now . . . or at the very least, confused.
I am a Gospel singer, songwriter who loves jazz, blues, hip hop and equal amounts of of Nina Simone and Katy Perry. I've co-written award-winning Gospel songs, enjoyed a best-selling jazz CD, and performed with world class musicians on stages across the country and around the globe. The twelve songs I've written for this project, Somewhere Between, are about the upheaval of my relationship with God since returning home from India where a three-week vacation resulted in my up and down spiritual journey that continues even now. Sigh.
Somewhere Between is an honest expression of my questions, struggles, losses and hopes sung using transparent sometimes, er . . . blunt lyrics over blues, soul, and Gospel-y rhythms. Though Somewhere Between harkens back to the Gospel, funk that ignited the band with which I used to perform, it's unlike anything I've done before in its rawness and intimacy. I'm excited and scared, but I'm feeling rather brave and free . . . I digress.
Your donations toward this project go toward hiring musicians, renting studio space, recording, mixing, mastering, and duplication. There are lots of great things in it for you when you throw a few dollars towards it, too.
No matter what you give, big or little, I really appreciate it. Of the many things that India taught me, perhaps the greatest is the gift of empathy - the beauty of choosing to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Here's me thanking you for walking with me.
