Evan Marshall and Brian Oberlin have been playing concerts together since 2012. The act is called Solo Mandolin X2. Both being a rare breed of solo mandolin performers, each guy plays his own short set and then they team up at the end. To put this collaboration into the annals of mandolin music history, the two have arranged their favorite types of music, and bring you, Twin Mandolin Slingers.
From the Classical music world, Brian and Evan have arranged some groundbreaking duets, including Khachaturian's Sabre Dance, Rossini's William Tell Overture: Finale, Brahms's Hungarian Dance No. 7, Oberlin's Mantello e Cilindro, and an adaptation of Kreisler's Caprice Viennois. In the Swing category, there are brand new originals from Brian and Evan: Hometown Melody and Lucky Star (Lucky Star is based on Strauss's Glucklich Ist), and also Don't Fence Me In, Washington and Lee Swing, Black and White Rag, and the Italian gem, Tu Vuo Fa L'Americano. Going back to their roots, Brian and Evan play the Bob Wills classic Sally Goodin' and Bluegrasser, Diamond Joe.
Brian and Evan will be touring in October and November to release the new album. October 15 - 18 in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, November 5 - 7 in the Seattle area, and November 12 - 14 in the Portland area. Make sure to go to www.mandoberlin.com for all of the concert details and dates.
Risks and challenges
There are countless risks and challenges in the music business. Clubs or venues double booking, venues not promoting, a bad sound tech, horrible weather for outdoor events, beautiful weather for indoor events, un-even stages, cancelled gigs, grouchy and/or unresponsive contact people, karaoke machines, and bad sound techs. (was that listed twice?)
The challenge here is simple... funding the project. The amount of money we are raising is the minimum for an album. Costs include studio time (recording, mixing, and mastering), album artwork and formatting, and the duplication and shipping of 1000 CDs.
More importantly, this campaign brings together a bunch of like minded people to support the music they love. And that, is not a challenge, but a joy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
