About

The greatest Lovecraft movie NEVER made – but you can totally play it on your tabletop!

This  cinematic card-n-dice game plunges players into one of H. P. Lovecraft’s weirdest tales. One player controls the cultists and deep ones, all other players try to make it out alive. The third and most terrifying game in the Shuffling Horror line!

The cost of creating a game is daunting - especially as an indie game creator. Kickstarter funding is a great way to make this hurdle less challenging – and your pledge makes all the difference! To support this project, simply select one of the pledge levels in the right margin. Click on the reward level that is good for you (from $5 - $90) and then follow the prompts to complete your pledge. Your pledge will not be processed unless our campaign meets its funding goal by May 31, 2019. Your early support is greatly appreciated!

Each Shuffling Horror title focuses on a specific time, place, and genre of horror. Our first release, Pittsburgh 68 (2012), is an homage to the classic zombie flick, Night of the Living Dead (which established Pittsburgh as the zombie capital of the world). Our second release, Roswell 51 (2017) is a mash-up of 1950s sci-fi space invasion flicks. For those of you who love these genres, we offer pledge levels that bundle these games and include a discount for each title.

THE MOVIE DECK

Key to the Shuffling Horror experience is the movie deck; this sixty-card deck holds all the characters, twists, turns, and terrors that await those trapped in Innsmouth – and it is loaded with great art by our amazing artists James Daly III and Wayne Miller.

To start the movie, the deck is shuffled and a number of cards are dealt for the first reel (round) of the movie. Ten cards are dealt for the first reel, representing the first ten minutes of the film; as these cards are played they confront players with terrible risks, plot twists, and the monstrous forces lurking in the shadows. Terror mounts with each successive reel!

THE MOVIE SCREEN

During each reel, three cards are played face-up on the central movie screen. The game includes this evocative card layout, which guides players for the placement of the The Reel deck, The Survivors deck, The Discards deck, and the off-screen Sanctuaries. The perimeter token buttons track each player's Survivor Points.

Note: the Roswell 51 box set includes our official Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board, a 20” x 30” game board designed for use with all current (and future) releases. The Innsmouth 32 card layout sheet mirrors the key card slots found on that game board. We are exploring production of a vinyl version of the Shuffling Horror Shuffle Board, which may be available to backers as an add-on after the campaign ends.

THE TOKENS

Innsmouth 32 is jam-packed with tokens, but not so many that you'll lose track of what they are used for. There are two token types: those used by the characters and those used by the Director. Character tokens are: Survivor Points (hearts), Mythos (keys), Sanctuary (locks), and Insanity (Brain). All the others are used exclusively by the Director for special effects and tracking: Flask and Deep One tokens, a You're Next placeholder, a Fade Out effect marker, and Reel Cans (with card count reminders added).

Fast-paced and action-packed, the Shuffling Horror system immerses players into a horror movie. One player is The Director who controls the flow of the movie and the actions of all of the monsters. All other players control the movie’s characters. As a group, players try to survive four reels (rounds). Players must play smart and take chances to make it through the movie – and this won’t be easy! Sometimes, none make it out alive…

The Shuffling Horror system has several unique twists that our fans love:

  • Players never disengage. Like a horror movie, each player is vested in the success and failure of the other players' actions. Plus, players can be sucked right back into the action at the turn of any card!
  • No player elimination. Those eliminated return to the game as monster players and join the Director's efforts against the remaining players!
  • The game can be played with up to 13 players (a lower player count is best until the Director masters the art of dealing the reels)!
  • Have friends that always show up late to game night? No problem! Players can join the game even after it starts, introducing new characters as the action unfolds (just like in a movie).

While the role of the Director requires a solid understanding of the rules and a flair for story-telling, other players need no prior gaming experience at all. None. Zippo. Zilch. A great fit for the casual gamer who shies away from rule-heavy games. It’s a simple as…

Each player controls the movie's characters. A character’s abilities are established by their stat scores (listed on the bottom of each card). For example, running away from a crowd of cultists requires a Speed test. To succeed, a player rolls a pair of six-sided dice; the result must be less than or equal to their Speed score. Rolling higher is a failure - dread consequences await.

Players start with survivor points (spoints) which represent the characters’ determination, health, skill, and luck. This versatile resource can be spent to negate damage from attacks, increase a stat score, or increase damage. Tension in the movie mounts as players run low on spoints.

To bring the game that full Lovecraftian vibe, two new features have been added to the Shuffling Horror system: Mythos and Insanity. Mythos are obtained by characters via items or investigation and gives them the power to banish monsters. Characters may also gain Insanity during encounters with powerful creatures (such as the shoggoth). The more Insanity a character gains, the more unstable they become.

The Innsmouth 32 rulebook is in its draft stage. For those of you who want to dive deeper into the rules, here’s a link to the Roswell 51 rulebook (the core rules are the same as those for Innsmouth 32). Enjoy these, while we get the I32 rulebook done!

The stretch goals we have in mind will be enhancements to product quality and exclusive rewards for backers only. As each stretch goal is attained, we will reveal the reward that is unlocked (as well as a little bit more of the monster that lies beneath)!

Our prime goal is to deliver this game to you in the time promised–and this is an aggressive schedule (see timeline below). We are limiting stretch goals to those that will not cause production delays (none of us want that).

Shipping costs will be charged after the Kickstarter concludes via our pledge manager. Shipping is never “one size fits all”, and this allows us to be fair and flexible to each backer based on their shipping location. We plan to keep the shipping costs as friendly as possible; in this regard, if any backer has an issue with their billed shipping amount, they have the option to ask for their pledge refunded before we ship their reward. See Terms & Conditions section below.

Rewards to all USA backers ship from our New Jersey location. Rewards to Canada ship from our Canadian partners. Rewards to the EU ship from Germany (Happyshops). The following is a list of rough estimates for shipping a single copy of Innsmouth 32; bundles will increase the size/weight/cost for shipping accordingly.

  • PICK-UP at a convention or local game night we attend: $0.
  • USA: $10 - $20 to most states. Alaska and Hawaii: $18 - $30 to most areas.
  • CANADA: $15 - $30.
  • EUROPE: EU & UK: $18 - $36 for most countries.
  • AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND: $50 via USPS. (Note: we are attempting to find an AU/NZ shipping partner in order to offer custom-friendly shipping to these countries).

If your country is not listed, please contact us directly and we will explore shipping expenses with you. For the launch of this campaign, we have included only countries that we have shipped to in the past and those covered by our selected shipping partners.

Our Shuffling Horror game has been building its fan base more and more with each release. We are still very much an indie fringe endeavor, with focus on playing games with our friends and fans at the conventions and geek gatherings we attend. Some of the conventions we regularly attend are: Gen Con, Origins Game Fair, GaryCon, and Pax Unplugged. We attend other regional cons and game club gatherings in the NJ/NY/PA area whenever we can!

Shuffling Horror Press Reviews

Our games progress from their clunky clip-art prototypes to final form with the help of those who play with us. Likewise, the reviews we have received come from the players and reviewers who have met us at conventions, by playing in one of our events or visiting our booth. We have compiled our reviews here: The Shuffling Horror Reviews.

And Some You Tube Reviews...

One great YouTube review is below from Lynn at the Board Game Kaptain channel. As just noted above, Lynn discovered us via a Gen Con event we were running of Shuffling Horror Roswell 51 (before the game was released), the next year she picked up a copy. The review below is Lynn's Top Ten Horror games, and Roswell 51 made the list - and holds the #1 slot. Thanks, Lynn!

The Board Game Kaptain and Lynn have also reviewed Roswell 51 and our R51 expansion pack, Santa Vs. The Space Invaders (find that great review here).

And... here's one cheesy guy who knows a thing or two about Shuffling Horror, too...

Larry Wickman, Game Designer. Born and raised in the not-so-wilds of weird New Jersey, Larry's love of fantasy and horror took hold at an early age. His journey to game design started in high school by way of the Basic Dungeons & Dragons box set; his enthusiasm for rpg games kept growing and eventually spawned his offbeat WEGS Old Skool Fantasy rpg (reboot coming in 2020). After self-publishing his rpg (2007), he got bit by the gaming convention bug, and has been con-hopping ever since. Shuffling Horror is the culmination of his love for old horror flicks, weird tales, and dice chucking. He's truly amazed by the great team (below) who followed him down the dark path to Innsmouth.

Ben Crenshaw, Graphic Design. Ben grew up on the East Coast and now hails from the mountains of Southwest  Virginia. He works in a wide range of disciplines that involve design, fine art,  graphics, and crafts. His work in the gaming began at his own Bent Castle  Workshops which produced the card games Numbers Leagues and Skallywaggs, and also a series of deluxe playing card decks (Pegleg Pete's, Deck of the Living  Dead, Pippoglyph and others). In addition to Shuffling Horror: Roswell 51, Ben was involved with the graphic design of 4 the Birds boardgame.

James M. Daly III, Cover, Character, and Monster illustrations. James lives in beautiful San Diego, where he draws monsters and robots in his spare  time.  He has been working as an artist in comics and illustration for more than 25 years.  His work has been published by Marvel, DC, Storm King Comics, among others. Notably the sci-fi horror comic series Bad Planet from Image Comics. In the world of tabletop gaming, James provided illustrations for  several White Wolf Games' Vampire and Werewolf books, and most recently the illustrations for Chuck D. Yager's Rise of Cthulhu.

M. Wayne Miller, Item illustrations. Wayne hails from North Carolina; whether he's working with a team or individually, he enjoys handling art projects from inception to completion. His attention to detail is well-tuned (just check out those Innsmouth item cards) and he enjoys the challenge of learning new methods and processes. He provided all the great art on the Shuffling Horror holiday pack, Santa Vs The Space Invaders. He's also the cover artist for Chaosium's soon-to-be-released Terror Australis, as well as interior illustrations for Modiphius's Star Trek line.

A quick shout-out to our Favorite Little Game Shops and retail friends! Have we got a deal for you... We love getting our games onto your shelves and this is the best chance of that happening (we're just not in distribution yet). So, contact us via email if you are interested and we will give you specifics on how you can pledge to this campaign and get your hands on our creepy offerings! Email: |wick |at| gamewick.com|

Risks and challenges

My primary goal is to deliver a game that we all can be proud of. This is my second kickstarter campaign and third boxed card game. My first successful campaign, Shuffling Horror: Roswell 51, shipped out to over 200 backers and ten countries. Our game is being manufactured in the USA by the same company who delivered the high quality components of our first two Shuffling Horror games. I expect to deliver to you another excellent product.

The game has been in development for two years, which included a full year of playtests in 2017 and a full year of actual play in 2018. We started layout and design in April 2018. At the launch of this project, all artwork, design, and layout is final, the editing and proofing of the cards and components is underway. The rulebook is moving from draft to final edit, with final layout occurring during the campaign. We are hoping to move to production proofs in June.

I do not expect any delays, but unforeseen issues can arise at any step of our journey. My aim is to get the backers their rewards before the product is made available at our convention appearances or to our select retail channels. However, this might not be the case. We hope that the special Kickstarter pricing and exclusive items make up for such a circumstance if it arises.

I will do everything I can to meet your expectations or exceed them. If things go amiss with our schedule, I won't blame it on the Great Old Ones (unless they really are to blame, in which case we’re all in trouble).

You will know what’s up with GameWick every step of this journey.
