umidi is a custom DJ controller you design. Using our design interface, you can choose up to 36 components on a 6x6 grid including knobs, faders, encoders, jog wheels, and aluminium push buttons. You can choose the way your components are positioned, colored, and the lighting shapes around each one. To personalize your controller further, you can have a custom image laser etched onto your umidi. You are able to build a completely unique controller.
We build your design and ship it directly to you anywhere in the world. Every controller is assembled and tested in our workshop.
With umidi you can control the RGB lighting to create music driven visuals/animations, buttons effects and select from millions of colors.
Each controller is CNC milled from aluminum and anodized in your choice of your color. umidi uses only premium materials and components, is compatible with all midi DJ software, portable and plug & play.
You can start designing your own right now at our website www.umidi.co/design.
DJWORX - "each one is completely individual and hand made to a very high specification and quality. It’s your controller rather just another controller that you’ve bought."
Designboom - "the ‘umidi’ DJ controller is a unique visual platform for mixing music."
AskAudio Mag - "Have you ever wanted to design a MIDI controller & have it built for you? Then umidi's kickstarter project may be right up your street."
YOUR EDM - "If you’re eager to buy it’s understandable but just hold off for a while longer."
Materialicious - "umidi is the world’s first custom & visual DJ controller. It gives DJ’s a way to build their perfect midi controller by offering unparalleled choice in both hardware and software."
PSFK - "most DJ mixers and interfaces typically come ready-made and are sold ‘as is.’ Capitalizing on this gap in the market, umidi is a custom DJ controller that provides a visual platform for mixing music, complete with music-driven lighting, button effects, and color-changing knobs."
ALUMINUM PUSH BUTTONS
We use buttons which are similar to the CDJ cue/play buttons you know and love. Our buttons have an aluminum surface and a premium Cherry switch rated for 40 million presses, offering total reliability. Buttons come in 9 colors.
Our jog wheels are made from aluminum, giving a good balance to weight ratio for a great spin. The jog wheel feels solid and has an anodized finish in 9 different colors.
KNOBS, FADERS AND ENCODERS - DJ Tech Tools Chroma Caps
Our knobs, faders and encoders use Chroma Caps from DJ Tech Tools. Chroma Caps have a soft rubber tactile feel and our manufactured in the same plant as the top DJ equipment in the world, including Native Instruments. Chroma Caps are designed to allow for a much more interactive performance and come in 9 different colors.
See more information on DJ Tech Tools website Chroma Caps
If we met our stretch goal of 50K we will have a drum pads included in the umidi. The drum pads will be pressure sensitive and include RGB feedback.
Around each component, you can customize the lighting shapes. umidi has an acrylic layer that goes through a process of 3D CNC milling and bead blasting to ensure a flush surface and even light diffusion.
Each user will have the opportunity to upload a custom image of their choice which will be then laser etched onto the top surface of the controller.
Laser etch images will be limited to black and white (not grayscale). Template files, examples and image uploading functionality will be available soon on our website.
Go to our website to build your controller. Using our simple interface you can drag and drop the components you want onto your umidi, select colors, lighting shapes and preview LED colors. You can save your designs and even share them on facebook.
There is plenty of time to try out different designs and you can begin right now on our website www.umidi.co/design. We will notify all our backers when it is time to accept orders (estimated late Jan or early Feb).
The umidi enclosure is CNC'd from a solid block of high grade aluminum, it is then bead blasted and anodized giving it smooth fit and finish and scratch resistance.
The unibody design gives it a great strength to weight ratio, weighing less the 3 pounds and is less than 1 inch thick (2.4 cm). We wanted umidi to be ultra portable, so it can fit inside your DJ/laptop bag.
At the heart of the umidi lie 288 RGB LEDs that you can control to do whatever you want.
Some examples are
The lighting is all controlled through a program we are working on called the umidi editor.
Right now we are in the alpha version of the umidi editor. The lighting features you see are programmed using typed commands of code. But we are working on creating a graphical user interface for the umidi editor.
The editor will instantly recognize the configuration of your controller and display this as an interactive interface. The umidi editor has a color spectrum that allows you to select from millions of RGB colors. You can click on a control and set it up for on/off mode, flashing when playing tracks and assigning effects.
If you want to create your own effects and hacks you can do this through the editor program using your own code, or other peoples code. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination!
We assemble your controller in our workshop and rigorously test each one to make sure everything is perfect. umidi is not a mass produced device, we put a lot of care and passion to make sure you have only the best DJ controller specifically built to your design. We use only the most premium parts and materials usually only reserved for high end audio equipment.
umidi is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows and Linux operating systems. Just plug & play, no drivers necessary.
Works with all major DJ software such as Traktor, Live, Serato & much more. In fact it works with any midi compliant software.
Once you map your controller its ready to go! Lighting mapping can be done through our umidi editor.
What's underneath is just as important as what's on top. We use Alps rotary potentiometers, linear potentiometers and rotary encoders. Each has been tested for operating force, reliability, quality and accuracy. The knobs have center indents, the sliders have the same force/feel of high end audio mixers, and the encoders have the ability to be pushed down as a button.
Over the past 7 years we have being Dj’ing, but we were never really satisfied with the equipment on the market. Current DJ controllers are pre-defined, stock standard and made for the masses, one size fits all. But each DJ has a particular style and unique performance. We knew only a custom DJ controller would address this problem.
The only alternatives for a custom DJ controller were DIY kits which you had to build yourself and generally lacked in quality. This is exactly how the umidi was born.
We built many prototypes over the past 2 years, and we refined and changed our designs on countless occasions. The evolution of umidi has come from extensive testing by DJ's. The current design for umidi uses no wire which reduces the chance of failure and allows the case to be ultra-thin

During the last 2 years, we have been working around the clock designing and creating prototypes, we contacted hundreds of manufacturers, got quotes and production plans for parts. We bought machinery and tools for our workshop, and have already tested all the electronics and circuits we will be using.
On the software side, we are in the process of transforming our prototype code into final code. It means running extensive tests on our software/firmware, and finishing up our user interface to make sure the umidi editor is simple, beautiful and fun to use.
We have figured out our manufacturing and supply chain, we now need your help to bring umidi to life. The funds will go into:
We are committed to providing the most unique and best tool for DJ's. By backing us, you give us the push to make umidi happen and receive the first umidi on the market, months before anyone else.

Thank you for your support!
As with any hardware product there are many associated risks and challenges, here at umidi we are working very hard to address each one of them.
Our primary concern is product reliability and quality assurance, we know many DJs depend on their equipment and any failures could be catastrophic. The main risk is ensuring the manufacturing and assembly creates reliable controllers from the start, we don't want our Kickstarter supporters to be beta testers. Throughout the last 2.5 years we have developed several prototypes through an iterative process, each one tested and improved. Our testing procedure continues with the latest working prototypes getting extensive testing in night clubs and pubs weekend after weekend and with many different DJs. Finally, we plan to extensively test each umidi after it is assembled to further guarantee they arrive working flawlessly.
Secondly, there is the challenge of delivering the project within a reasonable time frame, to address this challenge we have sourced all manufactures/back-up manufacturers/shipping companies etc. before launching the campaign, established our assembly procedure, and are working hard to finish the final design.
We promise to keep our Kickstarter backers updated on all our progress.
We appreciate your support, and we are excited to have you join us in our mission to change the DJ controller!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
