About this project

Oregon Sunstone...and the amazing people who mine it! This is the story of a gemstone, a people and a way of life. Oregon Sunstone is the Official State Gemstone of the US State of Oregon, but the people who dig it out of the basaltic rock of southeastern Oregon are as much the story as the gemstone itself. To date no book has been devoted to the gemstone or the people to tell the amazing story of each. This book is based on my years of working alongside the miners of Oregon Sunstone, getting to know them, their families and their way of life in a desert location that few people know exist within the continental United States. These are mostly U.S. Military Veterans sharing kindred spirits of brotherhood in a location that is as harsh as many deployment locations.

This 10x8 landscape photo book contains 98 pages with over 100 full-color photographs, and is dedicated to the amazing women of Oregon Sunstone. They left the comfort of home to join their husbands in some of the most inhospitable living conditions one can imagine, in order to seek out the beauty of the Oregon Sunstone. Without the women of Oregon Sunstone, there is no doubt in my mind that this story would never have happened.

I invite you to share my journey working alongside this hardy group of individuals as they extract a truly rare gift of nature in the Oregon High Desert. By joining forces with the good people of Kickstarter, we can print this book at lower prices and make the story available to more people. The gemstone deserves the attention, but more importantly the people who mine it deserve the recognition.

Your support of this project will help us provide free copies of this book to the Oregon Department of Education to raise the awareness of the State Gemstone of Oregon to the children of Oregon.

Thank you for your consideration.
