We take our training to the streets of Mumbai.
We take our training to the streets of Mumbai.

There has never been youth circus programs in India. Building on three previous years of teaching and performing in India Kevin and Erin Maile O’Keefe will return to Mumbai, Bodh Gaya, Bangalore and Udaipur to train the first social circus teachers in December 2019-January 2020.

The CircusYoga Teacher Training is designed for anyone who works with groups of people of all ages to facilitate learning or healing.

In Level 1 CircusYoga  Teacher Training social workers and circus teaching artists will learn the fundamental principles and practices of Social Circus such as:

Multi-generational & partnering practice

Collaborative group play & creativity

Practices that unify a group: focus, integrate/incorporate, activate

Playful and dynamic classroom management technique

Cultivation of your authentic teaching voice

Introductory circus skills such as juggling, clowning, and partner acrobatics

Integrate your previously acquired skills and practices into CY culture

Dive deeper into advanced partner acrobatics

Develop a specific practice for your community

Expand your circus skills and master the next level

Discover Mandala Yoga and build human and family pyramids

Analyze inter-personal dynamics and discern when and how to intercede

Apply the principles and practice of social circus to under-served populations

Create a closing celebration that gives your group closure and joy

Social circus is defined as a “social change intervention that uses the circus arts as a tool for fostering personal and social development of identified ‘at-risk’ individuals.” The primary goal of social circus is to help participants achieve personal and social development by nurturing their self-esteem and trust in others, teaching them social skills, inspiring them to become active citizens, and helping them to express their creativity and explore their potential.

Kevin O’Keefe (the founder of Circus Minimus, CircusYoga and the American Youth Circus Organization) and Erin Maile O'Keefe (co-founder of CircusYoga) have taught at Our Children India’s program called Learning Beyond. LB is a 8-day camp experience where orphans from all over the India learn magic, puppetry, theater and circus. At the conclusion of our 2017 camp Our Children organizers and Kevin met to plan how to extend that social circus experience into the daily lives of children living in orphanages. In 2018 Kevin and Erin led the first five-day CYTT for social workers and circus artists in Mumbai. In 2019-20 they will return to Mumbai for another 5-day CYTT, and expand into other cities where they have taught and performed before such as Bodh Gaya, Bangalore and Udaipur.

A circle is the most democratic shape for teaching - everyone is included, everyone can see and be seen.

SOCIAL CIRCUS …

• is non-competitive - everyone participates and everyone “wins”

• is not gender specific – girls can be strong and boys can be beautiful

• builds trust

• develops appropriate risk taking

• is done safely and safety is the number one concern

• is a community building magnet for life long learners and learning

• is creative

• promotes group problem solving

• has the physicality of sport and the art of theater

• develops coordination

• increases concentration

• builds self-confidence

• encourages stage presence

• improves balance, rhythm and reflexes

• helps sequencing ability

• promotes visual tracking skills

• improves fine and gross motor skills

• increases patience and persistence

• promotes fitness, youth leadership & social skills

• is an alternative recreation model

• supports Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences

• gives children a real context and application for learning, circus is not theoretical

• is inclusive - there is a place for everyone, and every child gets a moment to shine the in sun, the class clown, the acrobat, the princess, the high wire walker

• challenges all with “impossible” feats

• is an opportunity to show-off

•       is a chance to make a good living- have a good life

• improves coordination, balance, reaction speed

• is collaborative - the group is greater than the individual

• is inherently multi-cultural

• is a totally integrated learning environment

• is a safe space with boundaries that children get to play in

• exposes children to travel opportunities and chances to exchange with others

• exposes children to performance opportunities where their skills can be tested

The re-launch of this program can only take place if the O’Keefe’s can raise $5000. Can you help?

Risks and challenges

Building on the previous two years successes means the risks are lower in 2019-20. We met our goals and rewarded all 93 funders from the previous two years.  In 2018 we trained 15 social workers and circus artists. Many of them will return for the next level of mastery. As word spreads we will have many new teachers to train as well.

Every teach training ends with a photo shoot on the streets.

Risks and challenges

We are freely offering our teacher trainings building on a firm two-year foundation. We got excellent feedback about the 2018 Teacher Training for 15 social workers and circus teachers. They are already offering workshops in CircusYoga at shelter homes. Many of the teachers are eager for more training. This year we will extend our reach this year beyond Mumbai to Bangalore, Bodh Gaya, and Udaipur. The risks are minimal.
