Hi, my name is Mark Ames, inventor of the Iris Bowl. After months of designing, prototyping, testing, and adjusting, we are proud to bring to Kickstarter our innovation.
It's an anodized aluminum container like nothing the world has ever seen before. With a twist of the top ring the iris closure glides open. Twist the other direction and it glides closed.
The Iris Bowl has many uses, and is a perfect desk companion for storing paper clips, stamps, rubber bands, or whatever else you might want.
While practical for keeping many different types of things, its real uniqueness is in how its lid opens and closes. Twist the top counter-clockwise and the iris blades glide out. Twist clock-wise and the blades glide back together. An elegant feat of engineering. No visible points of assembly... blades which glide open and closed beneath the twist ring. Can you figure out how it's constructed?
The Iris Bowl is color anodized, a process which oxidizes the aluminum to sapphire and creates an extremely hard jewel-like surface. Reward includes your choice of color anodize: Silver, Red, Green, Gold, Violet, Orange, and Blue.
Stretch Goal Reached - Black!
Black will be added as a color choice for the Iris Bowl. We don’t have any of our prototypes anodized in black to show you, however Tim (my brother) has a product called The Orb anodized in black, which will give you an idea of how it will look:
Stretch Goal $15,000 - Rainbow Petals!
Once we hit $15,000 a stretch goal for the addition of rainbow option for the petals color will be added. We don’t have any prototypes with this, however we’ve produced a mock-up to give you an idea of how it will look:
The Orb Add-on:
We've made an arrangement with Tim (my brother) of Progressive Products to offer The Orb as an add-on to any tier. Simply increase pledge amount $20 for each Orb USA reward and $21 for each international.
The Orb color choices: Silver, Red, Gold, Green, Orange, Grey, Blue, Black, Violet, Turquoise

Manufactured out of aerospace aluminum alloy 6061-T6511 on state-of-the-art computer controlled machinery in San Luis Obispo, California.
As a contract manufacturer, we're constantly running parts for our clients. We work hard to keep our machines busy, and our clients happy. However, this means most all our company resources are allocated to our valued clients. With this Kickstarter our goal is to become one of our own clients! We'll have the funds to allocate development and machining resources to our very own product. Our hope is that this is just the first of many quality and innovative products that we'll be creating and producing.
Please note, the Iris Bowl is NOT FDA compliant and is not designed for direct contact with food.
Risks and challenges
With over 30 years of manufacturing experience, we're well equipped to complete this project on-time and to our high standards of quality. We're a USA based company doing all the manufacturing of the Iris Bowl in-house on our state-of-the-art equipment.
However, it's impossible to be 100% self sufficient. For example, we rely on suppliers for our raw metal stock, tooling, and an external provider for the color anodize finished. There is always a potential for unforeseen circumstances which could cause a delay. We have a commitment to communication, and any issues, problems, or delays that might arise will be shared and explained in regular project updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
