Production update - January 7th

Posted by Mantic Games (Creator)

Calling all BPRD Agents,

Woo-hoo! It's officially the year of Hellboy and we can start counting down the weeks until delivery. Today we've got a short update from Panda about production (short story: it's all going well). However, the really exciting news is that a mass production copy of the Kickstarter Edition has now arrived in the Mantic office. We'll be filming an unboxing video with James soon and will post the video later this week.

So, over to you Panda...

"Hello and Happy New Year to everyone,

Great news from our side! We have just sent the first mass produced copies to Mantic and production is nearly finished on all components. We will now carefully examine these first mass produced copies together with Mantic to ensure everything is perfect and will start assembling the games shortly thereafter.

Not much else to say or update from our side, everything is going according to plan and everyone on the team is excited as the shipping date is getting closer and closer. To get you excited as well below a few pictures of the close to final miniatures. Those were the last test shots before we started the production. Beside the color, which will be a darker grey in the finished game, those are the final pieces. We hope you like them as much as we do.

We wish everyone a great start in the new year and a lot of fun unpacking and playing Hellboy: The Board Game soon!

Best regards,

Kathrin, Chris, Emma, Adam and the Panda Game Manufacturing Team"

      Thanks for the update @Mantic

@Mantic: Thank you for the response and clarification. Unfortunately, I think there is going to be some wasted money involved with international shipping costs, but it sounds like this will be the only option. Either way, I can't wait to play the game!

Hi everyone (particularly @Dexter Frankenstein) - regarding re-opening the pledge manager. Unfortunately, in the past when we've done that, people have started adding extra things, which then messes up all the orders with the factory and causes no end of logistical problems. We are going to make extra Spectral Johann miniatures around the time the KS ships and will make sure KS backers can order them from the Mantic website at the same price as it would have cost during the KS too.

I'm curious to see the unboxing video and also curious to know the exact size of the box. I'm starting to worry it won't fit on my shelf. :-)

    5. DaveTypo on

If you just want johann can you have a store order it for you? You wouldn’t have to pay for shipping.

    6. BloopidyBloop on

@Dexter well I can’t fault your reasoning. I personally think there must be some reason they’re not re-opening the PM but you’re right, it wouldn’t hurt for them to clarify the issue more. And you’re far more respectful than a lot of people here in KS comment sections lol (this campaign overall has been pretty good in that regard!)

    7. Dexter Frankenstein

@Desmond and @Bloopidy: My frustration comes from having run pledge managers myself and knowing how simple of a request this is. I reached out to @Mantic directly with my question and a proposed solution—based on experience—but did not receive a reply. I thought commenting here might yield better results.

The fact that Mantic have stated that Spectral Johann will be available in their store, immediately after fulfillment, means they are running their production numbers well beyond the pledge counts. I just want to give @Mantic more of my money without having to flush £15-£20 down the toilet to ship a single miniature, when I’ve already paid £72 for them to ship a giant box or two to my house.

Their reply about not being able to reopen the BackerKit survey was in Update #72, on September 18th. That was well before they announced production was beginning. At that time, I spoke with BackerKit about the project and they said that even though the survey had been locked down, it would be a simple fix for them to reopen surveys upon request, to add a single item to a pledge. This can be done up until fulfillment begins—which will most likely happen at the fulfillment centers in March.

As @Desmond mentioned in his comment, there is a precedent for Mantic not responding to valid questions from concerned backers. This, in my opinion—as a backer and business owner—is lazy and unprofessional.

I’m still as excited for Hellboy: The Board Game as I was when it launched. However, it is completely fair to ask questions (especially when they’re not being answered) and leverage criticism in a respectful manner, when appropriate. I’ve been supporting projects on Kickstarter long enough to know a reasonable request from an unreasonable one. A simple acknowledgment from the creator is all I’m looking for.

I was not convinced about the practicality of the original doom token. Which to me looked like a tall cylinder, possibly prone to toppling (height versus base width) and rolling (shape). Not ideal for a tracker. So I prefer this one.

Liz does appear somewhat... klingon? But I suspect lighting is the culprit.

    9. Sean "TheShellFace" on

@Neil Amswych, that's the ragnarok rasputin from the SG's, not the regular rasputin

    10. Neil Amswych on

These busts remind me of the movie Boxing Helena! Hahahaha.

I agree with others that the Right Hand of Doom token isn't as clear as it was before but I understand because it's doom enveloping around Hellboy, so I'm willing to let that go.

I notice that Rasputin changed. What is on the hand that's pointing? It looks like a drill bit. I actually rather liked the outstretched arm pose that was in the original KS. It was very dramatic.

I second the opinion about the Liz bust.
About the fist...I actually didn't even realize it was a fist and I was wondering what it was.
I hope the real thing will look better than its photo and I look forward to see the unboxing video.

    12. leo.reca on

The minis look very nice! I too have some concerns about Liz's bust and especially the Doom token, which seems underwhelming and confusing from the photo. We'll in the unboxing video

    13. Carsten on

Nice update. I like the miniatures - except for the fist. It is an iconic piece of art - there is no need to hide it in a swirl of tentacles. The right hand of doom impending doom token from the campaign site looks much better (goal: 920,000).
I also hope Liz didn't get horns, but was just shot in an unfortunate angle.

Hellboy looks amazing and I can't wait to have him on my table.

    14. BloopidyBloop on

Sorry - got cut off. I also have a feeling a lot of cards will have pictures of minis on them which just seems...silly lol.

    15. BloopidyBloop on

      I also have a feeling

    16. BloopidyBloop on

@Dexter Desmond is right - I had forgotten. They have, in fact, already stated they wouldn’t reopen the pledge manager. So that’s that. I’d have liked to have it reopened as well but obviously that would cause an issue with logistics that they’re unable to take on. I know you’ll probably say they should and could take those on but we’re not the ones organizing the project and I’d defer to the game creator’s judgement on that one.

    17. Kees on

I think the Liz bust looks a bit off, with the giant forehead. Also, wasn’t the left hand of doom thing supposed to be way taller? Could hardly see what this was!

That being said, can’t wait for the game to arrive!

      Desmond Auer on

@Dexter They already stated that re-opening the pledge manager was not possible since everything had been locked in by them and Panda.
Unfortunately, they STILL haven't answered the question about the cards: whether some all will be illustrations straight from Mignola files, or some by Mignola and some just as non-painted miniatures with a 'glow'. HOPEFULLY all will be revealed in the upcoming video they are producing in the 'great unpacking' of the prototype box.
As far as I remember, the cards are going to be a mixture since they 'locked' the picture files ages ago (without telling US that it WOULD be a mixture, or implying such).

    19. Dexter Frankenstein

Silence isn’t a great way of communicating anything. In fact, it communicates nothing. “We’re not reopening the pledge manager,” would be an effective way of communicating that information.

My group and I pledged the better part of $1,000 in support of this project. I don’t think it’s too crazy to ask for a path to contribute more by adding an item that was not accurately described during the campaign. Comments in the last update regarding the Holiday Hellboy certainly form a consensus with regard to people wanting to pay more money for more stuff, while also being treated fairly with regard to shipping costs.

    20. BloopidyBloop on

I think their silence has made it clear they’re not reopening the pledge manager

Countdown has begun in my head already.

    22. Dexter Frankenstein

@Mantic: How about opening the pledge manager so backers can Holiday Hellboy and Spectral Johann to our existing pledges at no additional shipping cost?

You guys keep ignoring this one even though many backers have expressed interest. BackerKit will help you accomplish this. It’s their job.

    23. Mark N. Ziff

      And the film April.

    24. BloopidyBloop on

@Shawn I was thinking the same thing! I can’t tell if it’s just an optical illusion or if there’s something wonky going on with her brow.

    25. Shawn Palmer on

Does the Liz bust look like a scary demon to anyone else?
