Jungle MVP

With just 30 hours to go - Alpha Simian is in!

Alpha Simian is now available in your choice of freebie multi-hex miniatures – and will shortly be added to as an Extras that you can add to your pledge for just $12! The Mech and the Nameless Spawn are both now available:

Let’s look behind box number 7…

$580,000 – The Zees Team

Some Corporate sponsors haven’t got easy access to bizarre aliens or giant robots to form unusual teams, and everyone wants something weird to draw in the crowds. Farbiketek scientists began experimenting with retraining cerebrally enhanced monkey clones mainly for their own amusement when a supply problem marooned them on Shebentor IV’s outer moon for over two years. By the time the rescue team arrived they found two teams of highly trained monkeys playing DreadBall and nothing more than a few bones of the original scientists. Not one to miss out on a potential profit, the commander of the rescue mission kept the teams intact and ran a league of his on on the way back to base. The rest, as they say, is history…

If we hit this goal, we will be able to fund the Zees – the third Season 3 team!

Zees are a tricksy team of Jacks adept at avoiding the Referee. Extra players on the pitch and easy fouls are common, and there’s even talk of a special way of distributing action counters to get all your models to move in a turn… so super nimble evil little blighters!

Once this team is funded, we’ll add two Zees players into Striker! and make the teams available in the Buy One Get One Free (and for all of you who don’t like odd numbers, there will be an eighth team!) section ready for you to pick up! Rest assured that we've more to add to Jack and Striker in the future but we are now reaching breaking point - the more people that back this project, the more we'll be able to give you back!

Please let us know what you think in the comments and let’s see if we can nail this goal down soon. There’s a big beastie to come soon…

+1 for open helmet to see the monkey face and gloves on the feet instead of boots

      My thoughts on the 'Zees'

      Evolved monkey clones - Yes.
      That artwork - No.

They look like the bad guys from a cheap Saturday morning cartoon. In the 80's.
Unless a species is nocturnal (or an insect with a compound eye) it should not have eyes that big relative to it's overall head and body size.
Plus I think a lot of the other comments here about the feet have serious merit. They don't look right either.

    3. Mystic Weasel on September 29, 2012

Just to throw it in, the full helm is my favourite head out of the lot, like the visor mask too. But would need a couple without masks to see what they are i guess.

    4. Clive Weldon on September 29, 2012

Alpha Simian looks the part, get his little friends to match ;o)

    5. Clive Weldon on September 29, 2012

+1 As per Euansmith above and far better described than I would have done, if they're apes, make them less like humans, and keep their feet in armoured gloves... surely one of the main advantages of a simian is the ability to use your feet as hands, and vice versa?
Prehensile tails anyone? OK maybe not if they're apes, but would emphasise the fact that they're not just ugly humans.

I like Team Z as Jack Kirby style Parademons; but, if they are supposed to be apes, I'd like to see them with simian proportions. To be apes they need short, bowed legs, an angled pelvis and long arms.

cool stuff. looking forward to more actiony poses.....although there is a weird appeal to a team of monkey-centurions all standing stiffly and staring at their fists.

    8. Kevin van der Vleuten on September 29, 2012

I hope that silhouette is not some crazy ForgeFather tank x3

    9. Sean on September 29, 2012

I love the centurion feel! Helmet 3 and the optional look great. Definitely making it tough to resist adding more extras. Painted gold and red these guys will look awesome.

    10. MRiley on September 29, 2012

The name evokes "ape" but the background says "monkey" - they can go either way on tails.

No no no leave armor alone it is epic. Hands down my fav team exactly how they are.

    12. Robert Wheeler on September 29, 2012

Less armour more ape body showing may help.

    13. Robert Wheeler on September 29, 2012

No tails please. They're apes not monkeys. Some sort of glove/mitten footwear is a good idea.

    14. MythicKhan on September 29, 2012

Monkey tails, and armoured hand-feet are both brilliant ideas. I have to say that I really like the armour too.

Short answer: they just went on my list of teams to eventually get!

    15. Ben Neff on September 29, 2012

@MRiley Same impression at first glance for me. I saw the "monkey" influence after reading the post, but at first i thought "More Goblins?" Emphasize the ape/monkey and this could be my fav team idea. Gloved feet would be sweet.

    16. MRiley on September 29, 2012

Gotta say I thought they were some breed of goblinoid at first look. I can see the simian idea upon closer inspection, but hand-feet (with armored gloves) would help. Tails would also help, even though the name is derivative of chimpanzees.

I _love_ the armor, though - keep that idea going!

    17. Jason Moquin on September 29, 2012

I agree.....give them hand-like feet(even armored feet could show that) and slightly hunched. They do not look very simian-like standing like that and wearing boots.

    18. JP Max on September 29, 2012

@Gliblit Agreed on the posture. Although these guys were based on gorillas, the dimensions would still work (being they're both from the ape genus)

    19. Gliblit on September 29, 2012

I just realised one little thing, they stand too straight to be monkeys.

And anatomically they are very human. Longer arms, shorter bend legs would do wonders. Armour is fine, least puny monkeys get crush with one hand by and Orx.

    20. Matt Houghton on September 29, 2012

As for the shadow I feel the loop is part of the top like a giant tentacle !!

    21. Matt Houghton on September 29, 2012

Yup fix the apes and il fix my pledge to include them and the big monkey as well :) hope the big monkey can throw the little monkeys :)

Disagree with David, I like the Zees. Don't like 'em? Don't get 'em. Can't please everyone.

    23. IdConstantine
      on September 29, 2012

Maybe the solution is not to relate the Zees to monkeys at all? Call them some other alien race and create a more monkey looking race down the line? I love the look of them as is. :)

    24. Dorthonion on September 29, 2012

A little less armour, slightly more 'modern' but with a Romanesque feel, and feet that are exposed and more hand-like.

    25. Superbuzo on September 29, 2012

Agree with David, Vermyn players are relatively lighty armoured (only chest, shoulder and knee pads, they dont even wear a hat!!!) this monkeys look too protected, also whats the big deal with putting high heels to all boots? its supposed to be sporting equipment. I love roman and ancient armour, but not for a futuristic sports game. With these looks would make a great army for KOW, but IMHO not dreadball.

    26. Mr_Church on September 29, 2012

I honestly can't tell those are monkeys. They're definitely not human, but just not monkey enough.

    27. David Laughing Ferret on September 29, 2012

Well I was very very excited for the chance of an Ape team after seeing the alpha simian- bc he is stunning- make him just like the sketch and I'll sing your praises for years.

But, as much as this pains me, the Zees don't do it for me- shocking to me, since I'm a big fan of apes& monkeys. but there are several problems I see:

      1. The fluff says they are nimble, but they are wearing a great amount of armor- made even more problematic in that these are small primates, not big apes.

solution: give them less armor. Allow some areas of 'actual monkey' to show, on legs and arms, like the Alpha Simian: this will 'free them up' for greater movement, and also make them look more monkey-like, since we'll see more monkey- as it is now, there is just a bit of face, and it's just not enough. You can keep a Roman feel to the armor by use of molded chest plates, like Romans (and in the Burton's Planet of the Apes)

      2. Too similar to corporation. With the amount of armor, they'll seem more like short space romans than short space apes. Since it's a whole team of Jacks, no real demand to distinguish player types, which means less poses & mold making I'd imagine- can you see your way to provide some extra bit options? Such as bare heads without helmets? And why not tails? Tails could be a great boon for balance, maybe these are more like apes than monkeys, but they *could* be more like monkeys... or they could be apes that have been genetically modified to have tails, just to make them more agile for Dreadball. This would also sell the simian concept better.

      3. Shoes: Completely agree with those above who pointed out that shoes make little sense for their style. If the squidlies can walk on bare exposed tentacles, certainly apes can have both feet and hands exposed. My preference would be for bare & hairy hands & feet just like the Alpha Simian, with maybe a right hand modified glove.

I know it's impossible to please everyone, and some people are going to love them as they are, I'm just throwing in my 2 cents that I would love them with the changes I propose, but doubt I'd be interested in them as they are, even though I am a bit ape-crazy ;)

    28. Jeremy Squire on September 29, 2012

Can't wait to use the line "Get your hands off me you damn dirty human."

    29. Jeremy Squire on September 29, 2012

I like the idea of the Planet of the Ape monkeys but they do need to look more monkey like, tail nothing on their feet or the glove idea and also more of a crouch than standing at attention. Now I got to see if I can come up with the extra for team 7&8 or if I don't get them for now.

What teams do the beasties play for or has that not been decided? That might help people decide which they want to get.

    30. Alessandro S. on September 29, 2012

@ Funkychef - It appears to be so, yes... :\

    31. Funkychef on September 29, 2012

No free models to Striker or Guard? so the pledge from update 33 to include 1 free model for Guard 2 free for Striker every time you create a new team is now totally gone? :(

    32. Roger J A Duthie on September 29, 2012

Is the new beastie a giant brain? :P

If the team are all Jacks, why do we appear to have the usual 'Striker, Jack, Guard' concept art - getting more armoured from left to right, with the 'Guard' having no dreadball glove? Poor concept artist did 3x more work than needed! ;)

    34. Gliblit on September 29, 2012

Middle body, helm from the right, LOVE the helm design.

    35. Ooook on September 29, 2012

      @Adam Souza : +1, didn't figure they were monkeys either... :-D
and +1 for Gloves on Feet !!

    36. Matt Houghton on September 29, 2012

Also the monkeys are in thirty going to be rather small !! Shorter than a dwarf and using hands and feet equally !! Can imagine now a player trying to run down the pitch with a monkey on his back hitching a free ride and making his job harder !!

    37. Dave Grant on September 29, 2012

I agree with the handed feet idea. The concept of the team using feet as hands would be more in keeping with how simians operate in the wild. I would also like to see final 3 to 4 points of contact with the base in the final sculpt.
I had thought I was decided on my extra teams but looks like I may have to increase the pledge instead. Looks like Christmas will be lost to me through painting and playing. My son is as excited as I am about our new game. Space hulk may be staying in the cupboard for I while.

      on September 29, 2012

I love the optional full fin helmet. Gives them the look of a plumed corinthian helmet.

    39. Matt Houghton on September 29, 2012

Is the image a floating reg bot with crowd pacification cannons ?

    40. Plug Uglie on September 29, 2012

not a fan of the new teams look just the rules. why not make them more monkey like instead of roman soldier for some reason

    41. Adam Souza on September 29, 2012

I''m agreeing with the Gloves on Feet crowd. I didn't get that they were monkeys until I read the description. They should have different posting and not stand so upright.

    42. Jose Luis on September 29, 2012

Of the three that I like most is the third. Being monkeys i see them little agile and too armored. And they lack the tail which is essential

    43. Matt Houghton on September 29, 2012

Yes gloves on feet and no high heeled boots pleas would make all the difference :) also longer arms to make them more monkey like on first view I thought they where lizard dwarves !! Visor helm and full helm are cool as well as it keeps them more a mystery of what they look like :) questions are always better than the answers :) like the roman planet if the apes feel also is there MVP called ceaser ? Or bobo ?

      WinterWolf on September 29, 2012

Like the visor, but some should be open helm so you can see they're monkeys. The idea of gloved feet sounds good too, as they'll all be ball-handlers and why wouldn't they also use their feet? Not sure how you give that the same look as the hands, maybe similarly you have a metal guard piece over the top of the foot halfway down, then just open toes and flexible downward, like the hands. The armor gives them a completely unique look from other teams. Since they're all jacks and you'll need alt sculpts, shouldn't be an issue to have some mohawk helmets and some not. Not a fan of the vertical metal piece on the boots of #3, but no boots would take care of that.

Louis Brenton on September 29, 2012

I was looking at the sketches of the Zees for a long time, trying to figure out what was wrong, & then I realized--it's the boots! These guys definitely need armored gloves on their "feet," rather than boots.

I don't know that they need tails. Some breeds have tails (spider monkeys, etc) & some don't (chimps, orangutans, etc). I like the second & third sketches best, open-face to display their monkey-ness. Proper posing would also help communicate what they are...crouching or running using a 3 or 4 point stance would help. Anything that makes them look like they'd move like the chimp warriors from the more recent Planet of the Apes movie.

      Cool idea.

    46. Franz on September 29, 2012

No mohawk helmet please, let's keep those Karman sober :)

    47. Gareth Davies on September 29, 2012

Those monkeys look hilarious! Damnit, I had already decided on my BOGOF teams!

About adding in the free models.
It will happen if we can raise more. The money raised is enough to get them sculpted but there's a cost in 5000 free ones. Hit 600k for the 12th team and perhaps we'll see 2 free of each team. But it's not a definite with the amount of free stuff already bundled in.

Add up that cost of everything extra thrown in free so far. You'll note it's a lot in monetary terms.

    49. Scott "KillaMini's" Myers
      on September 29, 2012

Like the 3rd Sculpt and keep the mohawk for sure, possibly make it very sharp. I'm feeling these guys have to be super cheaters and super dexterous to stay alive with the other Ultimate teams so the Armor makes perfect sense, otherwise one good hit = dead monkey.

Oh, we need tails for sure that might connect the skirt, (allows for more free movement of the tail).

    50. Anders H. Pedersen
      on September 29, 2012

Oh, and I too would rather see gloves than boots.
