DreadBall 2nd Edition Kickstarter - LAST WEEKEND

The DreadBall 2nd Edition Kickstarter finishes on Monday. If you want to grab a rules upgrade for the new edition, or pick up any of the brand new teams, this will be your last chance before they hit retail in a year's time. If you want any of the Kickstarter exclusives, this is your last chance, period.

With the third Team unlocked - soon to be followed by their Captain - the DreadBall 2 Kickstarter is now entering its final hours. Whether you're an existing player, or entirely new to the best sports game of the Warpath Universe, there's a reason for everyone to back.

There's already loads of value in the existing pledge levels - from new teams to Kickstarter exclusive coaches. The Jack pledge is a great low price upgrade for existing players, while MVP includes everything new form the kickstarter and thensome!

If we get far enough, we also hope to fund one more team - the 'Cyborgs'. Star players brought back to the pitch by twisted bio-mechanical science, this team is as brutal as it is varied. Please head on over to the Kickstarter this weekend and pledge your support if you're interested!

DreadBall 2: New Rules, New Pledge, New Teams

Posted by Mantic Games (Creator)

The DreadBall 2 Kickstarter has been up for about 5 days now and without your help we'd have never had the game we have today.

In this update we've got a great post on what the rules committee are working on changing and improving in the rules - we thought this might be of great interest to you.

Also, we've listened to the feedback from the community about the project so far, and we've got some hefty stretch goals that will boost the value of the DreadBall 2 Striker pledge, whilst also adding a new pledge level designed for those who just want to upgrade their collection to 2nd Ed.

What is changing in DreadBall 2nd Edition?

By the DreadBall Rules Committee

“All right you miserable bar-stewards,” Jesus Ortiz barked at the hapless members of the DGB Rules Revision Committee, “I’m locking this door, and I don’t want to see any of your ugly mugs until we’ve got these rules nailed down harder than the furniture at a Zee convention!”

The members of the Committee shared a forlorn look as the heavy wooden doors of the conference room slammed shut behind the great man, the aroma of the cheap cigar he kept clenched between his expensive teeth at all times left behind him.

“Well,” said the Chairman, a pudgy man in his mid-thirties clearly out of his depth, “you heard the man. Let’s get cracking…”

Being given the task of working on the Galaxy’s Greatest Sport is a privilege and a responsibility, and one that every member of the Rules Committee takes seriously. Drawn from the DreadBall community, these are people who live and breathe DreadBall, who know every one of its quirks and are dedicated to making the Galaxy’s Greatest Game even better.

In this post on the Mantic Blog, we explore just how we’re going to do it. Read More

$45 Jack - DreadBall Veteran Pledge Level goes live at 8:00pm BST

Having spoken and listened to the community, we know there are a whole bunch of players who are eager to participate in the Kickstarter with a pledge that boils DreadBall 2nd Edition down to the essentials, and so at 8pm BST tonight we’ll release a new pledge level that does exactly that.

The Jack Pledge Level will include the Core Rulebook (MSRP $25) and the DreadBall Team Guide (MSRP $25), both physical and digital, as well as the revised DreadBall 2nd Edition Card Deck ($5 KS add-on), which has new action and event cards. There’s also a set of card counters that will be immediately upgraded to the new 3D plastic DreadBall counters ($10 KS add-on) the moment they are funded – because they are fun and add extra value to the pledge level.

This pledge level will go up for $45 at 8:00pm BST.

We are currently funding the plastic counter set, which includes this nifty Eye in the Sky score track figure.

Striker level goes BIG

The Striker pledge level ($100) gets you the complete 2nd Edition core game ($80 MSRP), Team Guide (MSRP $25), DreadBall Ultimate (MSRP $25), extra players, prone markers as well as digital copies of each book and 3 Kickstarter Exclusive miniatures – plus every stretch goal will be added to the pledge level at no extra cost.

Our next stretch goals will bulk up (literally) this pledge level even further - and we’ve broken them into 2 to make them easier to hit.

NEW TEAM: Matsudan

When House Kajima annexed Neo Matsudo it could not help but be noted that the culture of the sentient lizards already living there bore a striking resemblance to the feudal societies of Old Earth. Some claimed a divine providence, and that Matsudans – the race had been called – were as equals with their human lords.

Of course that was not accepted, but it did not stop the coaches of the Kajima Taipans from seeing the Matsudan’s potential. The creatures are immense, weighing nearly a quarter tonne, and performed a ritualised trial of strength not unlike ssireum and sumo of Old Earth.

The Matsudans thrived, taking on the House’s identity and also falling for the love of the Sphere’s greatest sport. Their play style is called ‘glacial’, and for obvious reasons. They may not be the quick, but they are inexorable, and even a grown bull Orc is not guaranteed to come off better in a fight.

Stretch Goal: $140,000 BONUS Matsudan Team – 6 Players

When we hit this stretch goal, we will add a new plastic team to Striker ($100 and Early Bird) - the Matsudan! You will get 6 players - a mix of Jacks and Guards - a selection of different poses.

Stretch Goal: $150,000 BONUS Matsudan Substitutes – 6 Players

When we hit this stretch goal, we will add add a further 6 players to new plastic Matsudan team in Striker ($100 and Early Bird), in a selection of different poses.

These goals combined add an extra $30 worth of value to the Striker pledge level, making it truly a deal not to be missed.

There’s lots of fun stuff still to come and I hope that you'll join us for a round of the Galaxy's Greatest Sport on Kickstarter. The DreadBall kickstarter project is now live and runs until midnight BST 7th August.

It’s a whole new ball game!

Posted by Mantic Games (Creator)

Hey, Sports Fans!

Since it’s launch in 2012, DreadBall has been tremendously popular – all thanks to you guys. Which loads of great miniatures, leagues and players out there, the game has gone from strength to strength. For the past 4 years, all over the world thousands of coaches have taken to the pitch to play ball, win tournaments and claim trophies - or often to just bash their opponent’s heads in, forgetting about the ball and scoring strikes. Based on player feedback, we feel that it’s time for a change.

Over the years DreadBall has grown beyond the simple core game and 2 expansion teams we originally had planned! It developed into 6 season books, 25 teams, a cast of MVPs, a multi-player expansion, several stand alone expansions and a supporting range of accessories, pitches and giants. Two of those books and several teams are now out of stock and the range has become intimidating to new players and unbalanced as new teams have joined the game. With the core game going out of print and 4 years of community feedback under our belt, it’s time to tidy it all up and make it into something even better.

DreadBall is returning to Kickstarter Tomorrow, to bring in loads of new players and fund the 2nd Edition of the game. This will be focussed on rebalancing the Teams, streamlining the rules and layout and overhauling the league mechanics. Launching at 1:30pm BST on Friday 22nd July and running for just two weeks, the DreadBall Kickstarter is designed around one main pledge level that gets you:

DreadBall: The Futuristic Sports Game core set

It includes:

  • Core Rulebook: with everything you need to know to play plus League System and advanced rules for cheerleaders, coaches and more.
  • New Teams: the Draconis All-Stars robot team and Ninth Moon Tree Sharks Yndij team.
  • DreadBall Pitch: with new artwork and location zones for cards, action tokens, discard pile and an in-built scatter diagram (as requested by the community!) The hexes on the pitch are a little bigger at 28mm rather than 25mm to give some room for arms and tails.
  • Everything you need to play: Revised cards, counters, dice, redesigned roster pad, RefBot MKII and lots of newly redesigned DreadBalls.

The pledge level also includes:

  • DreadBall Team Guide: Containing all the rules, background and stats for every team, team captain and MVP.
  • DreadBall Ultimate: This expansions allows up to 6 players to play DreadBall at the same time and includes rules booklet, counters, and card deck. There’s even a newly artworked pitch design (mock-up ‘sketch’ below), included on the reverse side of the standard pitch. Now you’ll only need to carry one pitch around!

We like to include exclusives to our pledge levels to say thank you for backing the project and DreadBall comes with two from the off: Fergus, an offensive coach and Tracer, a Support coach.

Fergus comes from the spaceship yards of Plutos, where a Plutosian gets a thick skin and a loud voice or is never heard. Fergus takes that philosophy and applies it to the pitch. He plays to win by any means, and if a call goes against him then shouting at 150 decibels can’t hurt.

Once one of the G-Net’s most popular superstars, Tracer believes that once a team is on the pitch there is little they can’t do if encouraged appropriately. She whips up the crowd with skills learnt from the stage, starting chants so catchy even the other teams sometime join in, and drives her team onto greater feats of athleticism.

As you can see, both have very distinctive looks and will look great in any hobbyist’s collection.

The pledge level will be available for $100 and contains items worth over $150 MSRP from the start – and, should we break our funding goal, the pledge level will get even better value as we break stretch goals and throw in free stuff. We’ve had some great ideas from the community – from miniatures representing the Eye in the Sky to DreadBall’s own Commentary Team event card holder – that we hope to see become reality.

I hope that you’ll join us for a fun campaign. Thank you for your support!
