About

An empty house.  A forgotten dog.  A mysterious discovery.  What has happened?  Intrigue.  Suspense.  Wild speculation.  Even a little finger pointing.  Nail-biting cliff hangers!  OK, so maybe no nail-biting cliff hangers, but there is hidden in this short book a lesson on the importance of remembering to care for a pet.

Origin:  I wrote this several years back, inspired by a real life dog and her bladder issues when left alone.  But a children's book needs vibrant pictures to go along with the story, and I could not muster anything beyond rough sketches.  So into the back of the filing cabinet it went.  Fast forward to the present, where opportunity is more readily available to self publish.  All I needed was an illustrator.  Enter Matt.  After advertising the position, Matt submitted a first draft.  After a quick adjustment, he presented the cover art that you see here.  It was exactly what I wanted.  I get a smile every time I see it, and I'm very excited in these early stages of the project to see each new illustration make this book come to life.

The Book:  This is a short book for children, thirteen pages long with a few sentences to go along with each illustration.  Some original lines have been edited to what I feel would be more age level wording.  So right now the storyline is done and there are rough sketches.  The finished book will be hard cover, 9 x 11 inches, a perfect size for a parent to read to a young child.  Here are some sample pages from the rough draft:

The family comes home, but the dog doesn't greet them at the door

Soon they discover the reason behind the dog's reluctance:

What follows is some reasoning that only a child could conjure up.  Finally the "problem" is cleaned.  Tensions run high...

But Dad and the dog make up in the end.

Funding:  The last and most important piece of the puzzle.  I thought I knew what costs would be associated with putting together a book until I sat down and started to work it out.  We have print costs, materials, shipping, fees, oh it makes me swoon.  We get lower prices on the t-shirts as the number ordered increases.  I wanted to keep the price reasonable, so we need to get a bunch requested before we break even.  Reaching our funding goal will allow us to pay for the first print.  After that we will print additional copies as needed.  If the project is a success, we are hoping to make it available as an online book purchase and possibly an ebook version.  Dare I hint about a possible sequel?  I also would like to reccommend one of the personal touch options.  Our family had a few of these done with books, and the kids got a real kick out of it.

Pass the Word:  Like what you see?  Know someone else who might?  Please let them know.  The only way we can be successful is by getting the word out there.  You can help us along by lots of ways.  Put it in a blog, mention in a twitter, add a link to our project, anything!

Thank you for any consideration in supporting our children's book project.  Here's to hoping we can make it a success!
