Define the Line - a comic book that is revolutionizing sexual harassment training to empower individuals to create workplaces that are harassment free.
Join an empowered community that is daring to Define the Line.
"Define the Line" is a workplace harassment training tool in the form of a comic book to help train, educate, and empower employees, managers, and business owners to create workplaces that are harassment free.
Within the pages of Define the Line employees, managers, and owners will have checklists to know what next steps to take. Included in the pages we'll have self-checks and evaluations to ensure everyone knows how to Define the Line for themselves and others.
simplyHR LLC, cofounders, Tina Todd and Nikki Larchar, have over 15 years of experience helping business owners go through the process of investigating harassment claims. Inspired by real-life accounts, "Define the Line" will highlight some of the most frequent and common types of harassment in the workplace.
With 1 in 3 women ages 18 - 34 reporting that they have experienced workplace harassment, traditional training methods aren't working.
With 6 different scenarios within "Define the Line" readers will be witnesses to harassment in varying levels of severity. Each scenario will show:
- How we naturally respond to harassment (freeze up, ignore it, etc),
- How we can be confident and define the line when it's crossed, and
- What co-workers (our greatest heroes) can do to help create workplaces that are safe and secure for everyone.
Employees and harassers come in different shapes, sizes, and genders. We are working with Moriah Hummer the comic book artist for Flat Track Furies to create characters that showcase just how wonderfully diverse our workplaces are.
Human Resource gurus, Nikki Larchar and Tina Todd, guide readers through the scenarios and provide best practice information throughout in order to help employees understand what next steps they should take.
"Define the Line" will not only be a way to educate employees and employers but will also empower individuals to work together to create workplaces and organizations that are free from harassment.
It was a dark and stormy night... Okay, it was a slightly above average Tuesday, and we were sipping on margaritas, because as some well-informed person on the internet somewhere once said, "no good story every started with having a salad."
As the second round of margaritas made their way to our table, we began brainstorming about how we could make harassment training more interesting. And then, something fascinating happened. Stories of each of our own individual experiences with harassment started to emerge.
Unsolicited storytelling started to happen EVERYWHERE. As we met with other business owners, community members, and friends, we began to hear their narratives. Their stories ranged in level of severity, but all had a common thread. There weren't any resources to help educate on what to DO if you're harassed or if you see someone else being harassed.
And we were like... wait, WHAT?
Being the HR nerds that we are, we began doing research. Like LOTS of research. And you know what we found out? There aren't very many studies on harassment training (interesting...). The few studies that have been done had some fascinating insights:
And alas, the Comic Book idea was born! With so many tools and resources being offered in only a digital format, there is something magical about having a physical book. Something that you can flip through, that you can go back to as a reference, and that's different from the rest of the training, online modules, and videos that we are constantly bombarded with. Something you can refer to not only in a work setting but anywhere! ANY TIME!
We need your help to print the first 500 copies and pay our wonderful artist Moriah Hummer!
1. The "Define the Line" Comic Book
Six varying scenarios will bring to life different workplaces, relationships, and characters. Within each scenario we'll show:
- a situation and how we naturally respond (freeze up, awkward laugh, ignore),
- then we'll rewind the scene to see how we can define the line when it's crossed, and
- we'll rewind one more time to see how we as co-workers can step in and define the line for others.
2. "I Define the Line" stickers
Stickers are great for showing off how awesome you are.
3. Define the Line Harassment Workbook
Includes everything you need to roll out Define the Line as your sexual harassment training within your organization. What you'll get in the digital workbook:
- Trainers Handbook - outlines best practices for training, provides you with guiding questions for discussions, 5-minute opening activities, and 10-30 minute enrichment activities,
- Evaluations and Group Checks - to ensure that everyone understands and is ready to define the line,
- Harassment Investigation Kit - Investigation checklist (to keep you organized), Workplace Grievance and Complaint Form, Workplace Investigation Interview Questions (what to ask the accuser, witnesses and accused), and the Workplace Investigation Final Decision Document.

Hello there! We are Tina Todd PHR-CA, SHRM-CP and Nikki Larchar SHRM-CP co-founders of simplyHR LLC. Nice to meet you!
We started simplyHR a human resources consulting firm dedicated to educating small businesses on the employee rules and regulations that impact their business in August of 2016. We are the definition of a bootstrapped start-up, which means we have yet to take out any loans or grants to operate our business.
While creating simplyHR Basics - A handbook for employers (now available as an online resource) and with each creation of a customized Employee Handbook we've come to understand the value of setting deadlines, getting feedback, the power of revision, and that a detailed timeline can move any project along.
Our goal at simplyHR has always been to find ways to make Human Resources simple, easy and FUN. With a collective 15+ years of experience working in Human Resources, we are no strangers to the boring, cheesy, down-right painful-to-watch harassment training videos and online modules.
Define the Line will be the tool we wish we had when we were conducting workplace harassment training.
We are excited to empower organizations to create safe a secure workplaces for everyone.
Risks and challenges
"Define the Line" is our first attempt at creating a comic book. We have assembled a group of comic book writers, artists, enthusiasts and a community of people passionate about the project to help us throughout the project. There may be foreseeable challenges in the future, but we promise to keep all of our backers in the loop. While creating a comic book is a new adventure for the simplyHR LLC team, we are no strangers to creating, publishing, and distributing content and books.
We have previous experience with setting deadlines, creating content and releasing our book (simplyHR Basics - Handbook for Employers).
As business owners, we are aware that projects are going to have some bumps along the way (it's just what happens) but we feel confident that we can tackle any challenges that come along.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
