As a teacher and parent I am constantly looking for fun ways to engage my children and students in teachable moments that ignite their imagination.
THAT'S NOT A UNICORN! , was born out of an illustration I shared with my middle school students. The illustration was about keeping your head up during the tough times in life. This evolved into a story of a young explorer who was searching for the elusive unicorn. The explorer became weary in his search and sat downcast in a meadow. Head down and sad the boy doesn't see the unicorn prance right in front of him. Instead of looking up he focused on the doubting words of his grandfather, whose only response to the explorers other discoveries was, "That's not a unicorn."
So the illustration turned into a really fun story about not giving up and going after your dreams.
That's Not a Unicorn is the first in what we hope becomes a series of children's illustrated books which are not only fun and exciting, but also allow parents to have a teachable moment with their children.
I have written the story, and laid the ground work for future books. My students have submitted art to be used in this fundraising edition of the book.
All money raised on Kickstarter will go to:
1) Preparing and publishing a student illustrated edition of the book.
2) Giving each student a copy of the book with their name as an illustrator. Can you imagine holding a book in your hands that you helped make, and that had your name in the credits? Pretty awesome and hopefully inspirational learning experience. It is great opportunity to give a lot of students a taste of success. Don't you think?
3) Preparing and send out all the rewards to our amazing backers.
Please send us your thoughts and ideas. Your voice is part of this amazing project.
Please bring this story about never giving up on your dreams to the children of the world. Also please help me show my students that their are amazing opportunities(like Kickstarter) to use your gifts, talents and express your dreams.
What are the rewards you get in return for your support?
Well I'm glad you asked. Everything is based off of some amazing student art. So we have hand drawn rewards, such as:
Unicorn Book Marks, calenders, coffee mugs, t-shirts, picture books and you get to join the "That's Not a Unicorn Family".
I hope this will become a community of support not just for this book, but for student projects of the future.

Risks and challenges
The truth is that you can have a great book, but if people don't talk about it the book goes nowhere. I need your help not to just fund but to spread the word. Please donate, post, link, like and share this project with all your friends and family.
It is true that this isn't my first time working on a children's book, but this will be my first children's book not commissioned by a client for their personal use and not mass market. Thus all the pressure is on my shoulders and I need a group of people who will believe in this project and help me make bring THAT'S NOT A UNICORN!, to life.
I have been doing all the leg work with publishing houses and I have already met with a couple of experienced artists to get the ball rolling on the illustrations.
Once funding has been secured I will be able to officiating commission the pieces of art needed to bring the book to life. I also have had extensive experience in layout and design of printed publications. Thus I have begun the preliminary layout work and am excited to complete it in the next few months. Then I will simply insert the art into the layout and the book will be ready for printing.
I have located a publishing house that will produce a limited run of the finished book (funded through your Kickstarter donations). This run will also include ebook and app based releases. This will allow me to summit the book to larger publishing house.
One of the biggest areas I need your help is in getting the word out.
The biggest challenge in children's publishing is to get market awareness. I am currently in contact with several teachers networks in an attempt to get the finished book into classrooms. Once the book in in front of the teachers and children I believe the market will demand a larger print of the book.
I am ready to tackle this challenge. Please join me in this adventure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
