About this project

Thank you so much for your support for Leah Stein Dance Company!

We are excited to announce that Battle Hymns will be presented in San Francisco, for four performances on April 26th-28th in collaboration with musical director Robert Geary of the Volti Chorus, the San Francisco Choral Society, and the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir.  Performances take place at the The Kezar Pavilion; an historic stadium at the edge of Golden Gate Park.

We are close to meeting our budget for this event, but we need your help!!

Your donations will directly support:

Lighting designer Leigh Mumford

Production manager Lora Allen

Percussionist and Musician Toshi Makihara, who performed in the original Battle Hymns in June 2009.

It is so important that we are able to include their participation!
We are collaborating with many talented dancers for this project:  Bethany Formica, Ellen Gerdes, Megan Mazarick, David Konyk, Gabrielle Revlock, Michele Tantoco, JungWoong Kim, Jumatatu Poe, and Mina Estrada.  We have been rehearsing steadily since early January.

We are thrilled that they are available for this landmark event for Leah Stein Dance Company.

The Battle Hymns score was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang and is based on letters, texts, and songs from the Civil War Period.  The choreography reflects the complex emotional tensions present in war.  Leah calls attention to the tension between the force of the ‘military mission’ juxtaposed to the personal experience of those on the battlefield and those left behind.  One is more restrained, controlled and anonymous and one is more vulnerable, raw, and human.

"A remarkable response to war"    -Philadelphia Broad Street Review

With your help, we can complete the biggest production in Leah Stein Dance Company's history!

And, again, THANK YOU so much for your GENEROUS SUPPORT!

Risks and challenges

There is a risk in producing an event of this size. Travel costs, production costs, and artist fees are all needed in the production of this landmark event. It is essential to have our production manager, lighting designer, and musician be fully involved. Without these key members, challenges will arise both administratively and artistically. Thank you for your generous support!
