Set in the world of Little Red Riding Hood, will you be the hunter or the hunted?
Take on the role of Red as you desperately try to navigate through dense forests, dark caves and desolate buildings to reach the safety of your grandmothers house, all while avoiding the beast that hunts you.
Play as the Wolf and utilize your predatory instincts to seek out the elusive Red.
As Red, your only chance for survival will depend on your various skills, such as invisibility, decoys and otherwise being light on your feet. Your cloak and basket will be your closest companions. Should the Wolf find you, your only real hope is to run and hide.
As Wolf, your predatory skills will guide you to your prey. Sharpen your senses to enhance certain sounds, climb trees for better vantage and hide amongst the shadows. Once you find your prey, stalk and frighten them by howling or leaving leftovers of the local wildlife, or simply go straight for the kill.
As mentioned above, the game world will consist of several different aspects, such as forests, cave systems, run-down shacks, as well as open fields, lit pathways and shallow rivers. Each time you play, these elements will be somewhat randomized, so no two games will be the same. Experience rich and vibrant colors during daytime, or deep and foreboding terror in the moonlight at night.
There will be several different ways to play Hood, and each will have a slightly different effect on the gameplay.
Hood will be playable with up to three other people (four in total) across both local networks and online hosting. Each additional player will grant Red enhanced abilities, while simultaneously detracting from each of the Wolves. Should the Wolves find each other however, their collective abilities will become greater.
Prefer to be a lone Wolf/Red? You can test your skills against an AI with varying difficulty, as well as specify additional map settings such as size, time and other handicaps/restrictions.
Hood is planned to be released on the Steam platform for PC/Mac/Linux. It will be fully compatible with XBOX 360/One controllers, with planned support for others, as well as keyboard and mouse. Additional distribution platforms may be considered after a successful Steam launch.
If the target amount is reached (or surpassed) and the game is not Greenlit through Steam, it will instead be made available on Itchio, and Itchio keys will be distributed in place of Steam keys.
While the game shouldn't require a high-end machine to run smoothly, there will be several adjustable LOD (level of detail) settings to suit most modern computers.
There are a handful of reasons as to why the project budget is relatively low, but this is mainly due to myself. I'm an experienced Unity programmer, and have a degree in Games Design. As games are my passion, I'm happy to cover the programming and design side of the development for free, setting aside the budget for other areas. These will include (but are not limited to):
- Concept art.
- 3D Modelling.
- 3D Animation.
- Sound Design.
- Additional Texture Design.
If you are skilled in any of the above areas and would like to contribute to the project non-financially or join the Nexus Games team, please feel free to send me a message at firstname.lastname@example.org, or fill out an application here:
Please be aware however, that I will not be able to offer you any fixed payment for work completed (at least not until after a successful Kickstarter!). Instead, I'd be more than happy to negotiate a percentage of all post-production profits.
While those who pledge a certain amount will see their name in-game in the credits section, any who pledge any amount will see their name on the Hood webpage (with permission).
The details listed above may be subject to change based on technical limitations, time constraints and gameplay testing, however the overall concept will otherwise remain intact. As the gameplay is further defined, a Concept Document will detail what will be included in the game, and will be made publicly available here in a future update.
The current rewards are not all that will be made available. Once there is some concept art established, additional reward tiers will include various print work, such as posters and art bibles.
Kicking It Forward:
We strongly support the Kicking It Forward initiative.
Risks and challenges
Currently, the only foreseeable obstacle will be getting the game Greenlit on Steam. To attempt to overcome this, before being released on Steam Greenlight, a playable demo will be made available, both for playtesting purposes and to allow Steam users to get a better idea of what the finished product will be.
If the game is not Greenlit and the funding goal is reached, it will be released to Itch.io instead and the same rewards will apply.
