Heart’s Hollow is the first project, in the making, by
Bitter Playhouse for Windows, Mac and iPad. It promises to break the mould of dating sim gaming by including fantastic elements of puzzle,
adventure and asset management.
Scene: an old, Victorian House in the small town of Heart's Hollow.
Mission: complete simple tasks, maintaining
the safety of the three oddball old ladies that live there.
The mission, of course, becomes increasingly difficult as gameplay progresses. It's a light-hearted and quirky story-driven game that focuses on mystery-solving dialogue, leading to a multitude of endings, from romantic to homicidal.
makes Heart's Hollow unique?
We’re creating a game that's easy to
learn, but addictive and challenging to master. While the gameplay remains
fairly simple, quirky and funny, the plot is a little bit darker and more adult
The story allows you to pick your own
romantic interest, and has multiple endings, depending on your gumshoe and
Who could you meet in Heart’s Hollow?
The protagonist in our tale is a newcomer to the
seemingly sleepy town of Heart's Hollow. Charlie is taking a gap year from
psych studies to gain work experience appropriate for grad school. What could
be more commendable in a psych student than working as a caretaker for three
senior citizens? But the true secret of Heart's Hollow starts to reveal itself
as Charlie cleans up the old ladies' Victorian home, and digs up the dirt.
Lilith, Millicent and Matilda are three quirky sisters
who suddenly find themselves in their golden years. Lilly still wears her
dazzling pearls, Milly still eats like she has the metabolism of a teen, and
Tilly still breaks it down whenever she hears a beat. She usually breaks a few
bones in the process too. That's why they need Charlie to take care of them,
helping them run the household and ensure they don't get up to too much
mischief. In return they help Charlie open up and find love. But, while doing
the chores, Charlie discovers that the sisters' home could be linked to the
mystery around Heart's Hollow.
Billy is the handyman employed by the sisters to take
care of the upkeep of the house. He comes around once a week to do repairs and
general maintenance work on the old Victorian house that doesn't fall under
Charlie's chore list. He's the strong silent type and doesn't open up too
easily. But get close enough and he'll never leave your side. Billy owns a
cabin in the woods behind the old house where he likes to work on his
sculptures. The woods have a reputation in Heart's Hollow, for being a dark and
dangerous place, but that doesn't seem to bother Billy.
Jill is taking over her family business of
landscaping. As part of her apprenticeship, she tends to the sisters' large,
but overgrown garden. Before she arrived no one was quite sure where the garden
stopped and the woods started. She is very down to earth and loves spending
time outdoors. Everyone calls her a daydreamer... but who knows what's really
going on behind those large, bewildered eyes?
Heart's Hollow is so small, it still has a doctor that
makes house calls. Dr Kelly comes by to check up on the sisters, making sure
Lilly takes her meds, Milly is following her strict diet, and Tilly is getting
enough exercise in her walking frame. She left a prestigious career in the city
to find solace in the small town. What could she be running from? As a former
surgeon, Kelly knows that the quickest way to the heart is straight through the
The sisters' old house comes with a lot of history... the kind of history that plagues attorneys. Takeshi comes by often to wrap up the paperwork around the estate, but always seems to get distracted. It's strange that such an intelligent man should be unable to complete the documentation for a few old ladies. Is he really that inefficient? What is it about this old house that keeps him coming back?
