A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

New DirtySixer 36er MTB & Road versions
Expanding the 36er DirtySixer bikes range.
After creating the first and only real big proportionate 36er bike for the tallest riders, running a successful campaign here for our All-Road DirtySixer bike -259% funded- and selling to NBA players like Shaquille O'Neal, it was time to offer expend the offer with more options. Now our small limited production 36er get two different additional models. The Mountain Bike (MTB) and the Road version of the DirtySixer!
Why a DirtySixer 36er MTB & Road?
Being 6'6"(or 198cm) myself, I know what it takes to make the only safe, proportionate and durable big bike for the tallest cyclists. When you're really tall, you can try to ride a standard bike, but you'll quickly discover that even the biggest frame size won't fit and have dangerous limitation. Worst "adapting it" with long seatpost and stem to fit our taller bodies totally mess up the geometry and weight distribution. You get a flimsy bike that can't even be ridden "no hands" and quite fragile too. On top of looking odd at best. After breaking my ankle crashing on a big frame road 700c bicycle, I created the big 36er DirtySixer concept. After selling more than 25 of our AllRoad model, I'm now introducing the MTB and Road version. Expending the real big bike concept for us tall people to different users and usages. Our big 36" size wheel allows us to build a proportionate and scaled up bike in every aspect. The DirtySixer bikes are exclusively designed, engineered and fabricated for us tall riders. The result is a safer, more balanced bike with a better geometry that puts the rider in the center of the bike. The longer wheelbase moves the weight of the rider forward, towards the center of the bike, resolving the inherent instability of the regular 700c bikes. Add to that specific ergonomics and a more upright and comfortable riding position. Those who suffer from chronic back, neck, shoulder and wrists pain while riding know what I mean. The big 36" wheels also provides a smoother ride too. Building a proportionate DirtySixer for tall also mean increasing our pedaling efficiency thanks to longer cranks, specifically selected to be proportionate to your long legs. All these technical solutions allows the DirtySixer to provide a unique and safe solution for you the tall riders. Being taller than average should not prevent you from having an awesome bike. The DirtySixer MTB and Road versions now expand the range of riding fields and our goal is to gather the tall community around our big bicycles! Tell your tall friends: they need a DirtySixer bike!
A proven solution for tall people:
The DirtySixer bikes are the only big bike to bring fun, safe and durable ride for the tall and sometimes heavy riders. Our proven design and solution have been tested by more than a hundred tall riders and adopted by more than 25 tall customers around the world, like Shaquille O'Neal (7'1") and Mark Eaton (7'4") to name a few. Our customers come back from their test rides with huge smiles on their face and comments like: "I have never felt so good or comfortable on a bike since I was a child"! After thousands of hard miles on all of our prototypes and face to face comparison with the older 700c/29er solution, we are totally confident in our unique solution. The gain is unmatched for us tall. The value of a bigger bike, purposely designed and fabricated to support our tall body is incomparable. We are the only ones to have the knowledge and the unique engineering background to design and produce the best bikes for tall: the DirtySixer 36er. Test riding a DirtySixer when you're tall is the best thing to be convinced. Come visit us in Santa Cruz and we will organize a ride.
DirtySixer 36er Mountain Bike explained
After more than 4 years of testing our (rigid) AllRoad DirtySixer on trails at the Sea Otter Classic cross-country race, at the famous downhill Downieville, Tamarancho, China Camp or on the Santa Cruz trails, we felt the need for a specific Mountain Bike (MTB) version. A hardtail MTB since full-suspension bikes have a narrower range of usage than a hardtail. We developed a specific super sturdy frame to accommodate the rougher usage and the fork travel. It's the perfect bike for trail, single track or Cross Country, Enduro, but not pure Downhill. We developed the MTB version DirtySixer using the inverted dual-crown Groove fork from the Colorado based company MRP. This is the sturdiest DH type fork available. We asked MRP to custom tune their forks to our specs in order to reduce the original travel from 200mm to 100mm. This helps clear our bigger wheel. They also made a custom specific 20mm thru axle for us to accommodate our 150mm hubs, that are wider than the conventional 110mm mtb bikes. Wider hubs means stronger wheels. We developed our very own triple clamps (commonly named dual crowns) in-house, developing our own design/geometry and fabricating them on our CNC machine here in California. The result is just amazing. With the big momentum and roll-over ability of the big 36" wheels (remember the low angle of attack of these wheels) the 36er MTB DirtySixer smooth out the trails and soak up rock and roots to a unknown level. This MTB 36er DirtySixer will make every trails and single track a blast, flowing over obstacles with pure efficiency, control and comfort too! Mind you, the switch backs are also pretty fun when you get your DirtySixer fully leaned, planted on its big contact patch, allowing you to keep your speed and momentum through these technical turns. Plus the long wheelbase offers an incredible stability at high speed. The 36er MTB is available with wide range cassette or Rohloff.
DirtySixer 36er Road Bike Explained
After riding our AllRoad DirtySixer for thousands of miles on fire roads, trails but also on asphalt, it was time to bring for a pure Road version. A DirtySixer that would get lighter rims, slick tires and drop bars. The geometry has been modified to allow a lighter feel and sharper cornering. We altered the trail numbers and a different fork design make this Road version more lively while retaining the safe and stable characteristics of the AllRoad. We retained the same wide hubs front and back to offer the strongest and most durable wheel solution. We use a Shimano 1x11 derailleur system to allow the widest gear range possible using 11 to 42 teeth cassette (49T option available). Of course the Road 36er DirtySixer is also available with the Rohloff XL hub. This internal geared hub has an even wider range of gears all inclosed inside the hub. It is super reliable, can shift without pedaling and also offer the strongest wheel build possible with its wide dishless design. The best solution for riders over 300lbs. Taller riders comes with broad shoulders so we spec'd 48 cm center-to-center drop bars. We are working on a custom solution for bigger bars for the future. The riding position is designed to be a more relaxed and comfortable compromise for us tall with a more upright definition: think more like a touring or randonneur bike rather than a time trial bike. We tall don't usually have the same flexibility as pro racers! Since the DirtySixer Road bike is not a race bike nor it will pretend you can win the Tour de France on it we chose to make it efficient for every rides. To push the versatility further, we decided to keep the rear eyelets (from the All Road version) to allow you to use our custom rear rack in case you want to get side panniers on your DirtySixer Road bike for touring or simply for commuting.
California Hand Fabricated!
Like all of our DirtySixer bikes, our new MTB and Road versions are fabricated here in California, by our local (Sacramento) engineer and fabricator, Ventana Bikes. Ventana brings more than 25 years of experience in building impressive full-suspension tandems, among other strong and reliable mountain bikes and fat bikes.

Shipping and duty fees
Because KickStarter does not allow us to charge shipping case by case after you pledge, we estimated them. We have inquired to find the best shipping company at the best rate but we cannot get exact shipping price for any situation until we know where your DirtySixer will go. If you are willing to come to the Bay Area, you can pick up your DirtySixer in person. In this case we will have to charge California sale taxes. For international backers, we will go through the same process. Also please note that duty fees (or import fees) cannot be handled by DirtySixer bikes. Backers will have to inquire and assume themselves about import fees.

Risks and challenges
Hand fabricating a new limited batch of DirtySixer bikes is now going to be an easier task. Making big, safe and fun bicycles for tall riders is still a very special job to achieve at our boutique level. In a world of mass-produced bikes, where all the available components are standardized for average riders (think 5'8" and 165lbs), it's a challenge. Because our tall customers are not average, we have to source or fabricate bigger, longer, stronger and safer components to build the DirtySixer bikes. Thanks to our experience with our first batch and with rigorous testing and development, we have streamlined a good way to get our custom parts made. However, some of our providers require a "minimum order quantity" to create new molds or fixtures in larger sizes. This is where the community of tall riders can help: we need to reach that number in order to produce these new models. These new Road and MTB versions of the DirtySixer are offered during this campaign at a $500 off MSRP only if we can order multiple bikes. You can help getting your tall friends, family, coworkers, colleagues or teammates on the right bike and help us too helping them! Please share the word. Let them know that the only bicycle in the world really made for tall people is the DirtySixer and it can be build with their help!
