About this project
A 36er bike for the tall riders
Being a member of the tall community at 6'6"(198cm) myself, I never had a bike my size, not to mention one safe to ride or durable. When you're really tall, you can try to ride a standard bike, but you'll quickly discover, there is no such thing as "one size fits all" for us. And the dangerous limitation of "adapting it" to our taller bodies. There are things that we cannot (us tall) just "make it work". About five years ago, I broke my ankle crashing on a poorly designed 700c bicycle, those big frame that look like scaffolding. While recovering from surgery, I started designing the DirtySixer as the ultimate answer: a real big bike for us tall people. I wanted to use a bigger wheel size and the big 36" rims were the perfect solution. They had never been used to build a proportionate bike exclusively for tall riders. Thinking outside of the box (and the wheel size legacy), I designed the DirtySixer from the ground up as a scaled up bike in every single component, not only the wheels. I created a safer, more balanced geometry that puts the rider in the center of the bike. The longer wheelbase moves the weight of the rider forward, to the center of the bike, resolving the inherent instability of the regular bikes that were "adapted" to tall riders. I wanted tall specific ergonomics, with a more comfortable riding position (because my back, neck, shoulder and wrists were hurting), and increased pedaling power through longer cranks (proportional to rider's inseam). All these characteristics allows the DirtySixer to provide a unique and safer solution for tall riders. Being taller than average should not prevent you from having an awesome bike. DirtySixer is the solution, and our goal is to gather the tall community around the best big bicycle ever!
We have been introduced to the NBRPA (National Basketball Retired Players Association" thanks to Bill Walton himself. And we are the only bicycle company endorsed by the NBRPA.
Shaquille O'Neal (7'1") retired NBA player, Business mogul, Former athlete, Purveyor of fun.
"Wow! I've had alot of things made for me before but nothing like this. Thank you!"
Alex Leanse (6'10") at McLaren MTB Race 2013. Alex became our test rider soon after.
"Hi David, this is Alex. We met today at McLaren Park, I was the 6'10" guy with his arm in a sling. Thank you again for letting me take the DirtySixer around the parking lot. Your creation is extraordinarily awesome! Like you say on your page, "if you're taller than 6'6" there's a good chance you've never had a bicycle your size." I thought my XL Karate Monkey and XXL Stumpjumper FSR felt pretty good, but the moment I swung a leg over the DirtySixer I knew that 29" wheels will feel just too small from now on."
Reland Boyle (6'8") after riding his custom made DirtySixer 2015. Reland is our East Coast Rep.
"Besides the obviously much, much larger wheels and wider tires than what I have on my touring bike, on the DirtySixer the crank arms are much longer and the Q-factor is much wider which initially had me feeling like a small boy trying to ride his older brother’s bicycle. The steering geometry is also very new to me, but after a week I can say that it’s all beginning to feel pretty natural. Now my touring bike feels like a tiny toy by comparison. I can’t wait to get the DirtySixer out on some proper trails and hit some sweet jumps."
Blake Cadigan (6'10") at the Sea Otter Classic 2015.
"Thanks David, I'm stoked about the bike. And the brooks saddle was a great feel. It was the first time in my life I felt comfortable and somewhat "normal" on a bicycle that is built for larger men like ourselves."
Jack Brown (6'8") after the cross country race at Sea Otter Classic 2015.
"Thank you for letting me try the DirtySixer at this year's Sea Otter classic. I used to love bike riding in my younger days but it had become more and more painful. I thought it was just because I was getting older and was ready to accept the days of soreness after riding 19 miles of hilly terrain this time. However, I felt great after the ride and didn't feel any aches. The DirtySixer made me realize I have been riding the wrong sized bike all these years. Thank you for re-introducing me to a sport I really love!"
A proven solution:
The DirtySixer is the only bike to bring a fun, safe and durable big 36er bicycle for the tallest and heaviest riders, thanks to our proven design. Our multiple -tall- test riders have been clocking thousands of hard miles on our prototypes. For 3 years in a row at the Sea Otter Classic cross-country race, riding down the famous downhill trails of Downieville, Tamarancho, ChinaCamp, Santa Cruz trails etc. We have now the knowledge to produce the best DirtySixer bike ever: it's an all-road bike, a cross bike, a touring bike, a town&country bike: it's a do-everything bike! It will be fabricated here in California, by the best fabricator, Ventana Bikes. We are proud to work with this local (Sacramento) partner, who brings more than 25 years of experience in building impressive full-suspension tandems, among other strong and reliable mountain bikes and fat bikes. The DirtySixer is a configurable bicycle: you can get the single-speed today and later swap the drivetrain for a wide-range 10 or 11-speed cassette and derailleur. It's possible, just order a Shimano cassette, derailleur and shifter at your local bike store and they will put them on. Or let's say you get the single speed or derailleur version today and later want the reliability and simplicity of the German built 14-speed Rohloff? No problem, just order a complete new custom hand-laced rear wheel and shifter from us and your local bike shop will put them on your DirtySixer. As for ergonomics, we have wide 800mm handlebars for everyday use and trail riding. We will offer later custom handelbars with bigger tubing diameter (your big hands deserve it) in several style (flat or sweepback type)! Wide custom saddle made with silicon gel or the leather by Brooks England are available options. DirtySixer is a small company with an commitment to our tall community, providing big quality solutions.

Part List or Components
DirtySixer is always looking at providing the best value for the money and of course the most durable parts. Our efforts to source the best/strongest components at the best price depend on how many we will order. Until the end of the campaign we will hold on the list of the parts for brakes, shifters, handlebars, seat post and saddle as well as pedals etc. Only when we know how many bikes we will produce we can go negotiate the best parts to offer the best value possible. Hang on, it will be really awesome.
The San Francisco Exploratorium
The San Francisco Exploratorium did a feature with DirtySixer bikes to explain the benefits of a proportional wheel size to the height of the rider. Check it out below:

Shipping and duty fees
Because KickStarter does not allow us to charge shipping case by case after you pledge, we estimated them. We have inquired to find the best shipping company at the best rate but we cannot get exact shipping price for any situation until we know where your DirtySixer will go. If you are willing to come by Santa Cruz, you can pick up your DirtySixer in person. In this case we will have to charge California sale taxes. For international backers, we will go through the same process. Also please note that duty fees (or import fees) cannot be handled by DirtySixer bikes. Backers will have to inquire and assume themselves about import fees.
After more than 3 years of Research & Development and a lot of miles test riding and replying to all sorts of questions from curious people and journalists, here is the coverage (so far) of the DirtySixer bikes in the news. Let us know if you can connect us with more and be able to spread the word to a wider audience!
DirtySixer Color Options
Sky White is the DirtySixer signature color. But for more personalized DirtySixer, we offer 2 levels of custom colors available.
A first level with 11 custom colors (adds $190) and a second level of 6 candy custom colors (adds $260).
Our powder coating process is also environmentally friendly: Since the powder coating process does not use solvents in any way, VOC emission problems are eliminated. Powder coating is just that, powder. It is non toxic, and not more harmful to the environment than dust. Plus it's super resistant! Let your tall friends know they can have their big DirtySixer bikes in those amazing colors!
Risks and challenges
Building a small batch of big, strong, safe and fun bicycles for tall and tall & heavy riders is a very difficult task in a mass-production industry where all the components are standardized for average riders (think 5'8" and 165lbs). Our customers are not average and for that reason we have to source or fabricate bigger, longer, stronger and safer components to build the DirtySixer bikes. Through rigorous testing and development, we have sourced and created many custom parts. However, some of our providers require a "minimum order quantity" to justify creating new molds/fixtures in larger sizes specifically for our components. This is where the community of tall riders can help: the more bikes we order into production this round, the easier and faster we will be able to convince our partners to produce per our specific requests. We can only offer the DirtySixer bikes at this price during this campaign if we order multiple bikes, at least more than 5. Please share the word with all your tall and very tall friends/family members and colleagues. Let them know that the only bicycle in the world really made for tall people is the DirtySixer and it can be build with their help! Thanks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
