NEW! SEE THE PUMP AND APP IN ACTION
For any mom who wants to return to the corporate world while breastfeeding - or who just wants the option to be away from her baby for more than a few hours at a time - a breast pump isn't an option. It's a necessity.
Current breast pumps are loud. To use them, you have to go someplace private and take off your shirt. It’s exponentially more difficult to keep up at work. If you are or you know a pumping mom, then you’re familiar with this ordeal that takes hours out of the day. Using these outdated breast pumps literally creates a barrier between a woman and the world around her – at work, home or anywhere in between.
THE BREAST PUMP RE-IMAGINED
Babyation was born after Sam read an article in The New York Times Motherlode blog. The authors posed the question that "Shouldn't the breast pump be as elegant as an iPhone and quiet as a Prius by now?" That really struck a chord with us. It seemed absurd that, with all of the advances in technology, breast pumps hadn't changed in the last decade.
Babyation has re-imagined the breast pump to make life easier for moms everywhere. We've spent the past two years refining our patent-pending design, which has been validated by a pediatrician and lactation consultant.
BABYATION'S REVOLUTIONARY PUMP
When we began the design process, we asked ourselves: What would a breast pump be if it was invented in 2016 instead of in 1854? How can we create a modern breast pump for a modern mom?
Our pump is quiet. The bottles don’t hang off the breasts. It is controllable by smart phone and offers customizable programs and an incredible app. It is comfortable and discreet. Quite simply, it’s a game-changer for moms everywhere. Stay-at-home moms, working moms, work-from-home moms…everyone benefits.
Check out a side-by-side comparison:
The front mannequin depicts Babyation's unique form-factor. The bottles can easily be located on a desk, on the floor or in a bag...wherever is most convenient for mom. Contrast our design to that of a current leading breast pump shown on the back mannequin, with the bottles hanging off the breasts. The difference is clear!
Below is a comparison of our breast shield prototype versus that of a product currently on the market:
As you can see, ours features a much lower profile. It's optimized for comfort, efficiency and discretion.
PROTOTYPE SNEAK PEAK
This is it! The Babyation breast pump has been through several iterations of our prototype and components to ensure that we have built a pump that best serves the needs of moms everywhere. We've written the code, 3D printed many iterations of prototypes, and built the tech to make it all work.
Here's where things stand today: we have perfected our prototype, and we have successfully extracted milk from the breasts. We have built low-profile breast shields that fit into a bra and we can control the pump from a smartphone. As you can tell from our video, our product is whisper-quiet and the bottles are no longer located on the breasts.
The difficult part is done! Now that we have the prototype, the next step is to design for manufacturing.
Our industrial design team is refining the design of the enclosure. The enclosure is the shell that contains all of the circuit boards, motor, battery, and other tech that make the whole system work. (The enclosure houses all of the elements that we've already finalized.)
The cosmetic design will continue to evolve during and after this campaign, but the overall design of the parts that help express milk has already been completed.
While our engineering team is hard at work, we have begun preliminary meetings with domestic manufacturers to ensure we are ready to begin tooling development as soon as the design is completed. It is important to us to build our product in the U.S.
We believe in beautiful design that accounts for every detail, including the finishes, functionality and packaging, and we won't rest until our pump looks and feels like a product you'd be proud to own. Therefore, the pump that will be available for sale will be much more refined than what you see in these photos.
JOIN US ON OUR JOURNEY!
Moms can experience the pumping revolution in March 2017 – and we can get there faster with your support!
February 2016 - September 2016
The look and feel of our pump and app will be refined to be sleek and beautiful, and they will simultaneously undergo all necessary testing. We have some awesome partners to help us with this; we'll tell you about them in our exclusive updates for backers!
September 2016 - January 2017
We'll work with experts to ensure we pass all regulatory approval. Meanwhile, we will develop tooling and finalize our supply chain.
January 2017 - March 2017
Upon approval, we'll complete the tooling and begin our initial production run.
Get ready, moms and moms-to-be, for a whole new pumping experience! Our first pumps will be ready to ship.
We are Sam and Jared, a wife-and-husband team based in St. Louis, Missouri. We have a seven-month-old son named Exton (who is Babyation's Chief Baby Officer!).
We know it's not enough for you to just believe in our product. You need to believe in our team as well, and we are just that: a team. Jared is responsible for product development (with Sam's input, of course!) and technology. His background is in system integration, electronics, software development, and IT engineering. Sam handles all business aspects of the company. A Wharton grad, Sam spent nearly a decade at ESPN in business development and strategy and subsequently has been working as an advisor to startups and consulting firms.
Most importantly, though, is that we are parents. Sam lugs her pump around everywhere we go. She has used nearly every pump on the market. There are always parts drying on the counter and bottles of milk in the fridge. We live and breathe breast pumps.
We also have a great team of experts and consultants that we collaborate with on key initiatives.
SHARE YOUR STORY
We all know someone who can benefit from Babyation's revolutionary breast pump, whether it's a friend, sister, daughter or co-worker. The most inspiring part of starting this company has been the outpouring of women and men who share their pumping stories with us, and we’d love to hear yours.
Risks and challenges
Entrepreneurs are often asked what keeps them up at night. Here's what disrupts our sleep (besides our son!):
We're most concerned about what we can't control. Things like our suppliers running out of parts or the regulatory process posing a challenge. But that's why we're working with the best people to help us navigate the difficult waters and decrease the uncertainty as much as possible.
This project is incredibly important to us. We are on a mission to make breast pumps better for moms everywhere, and we want to (and will!) get this right. We want every detail to be perfect and to meet every possible need.
If you have any questions or concerns, we'd be happy to address them directly. Feel free to shoot us an email at email@example.com. We'd love to chat!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
