About this project
Please support the post-production expenses of Superpowerless, my debut feature film as a director. Previously I have been privileged to help produce films such as Surrogate Valentine, An Honest Liar, A Picture of You, Daylight Savings, Congratulations, Last Kind Words, Yes We're Open and White on Rice.
Superpowerless is the very personal story about Bob, a superhero who has lost his powers shortly after turning forty. It is a collaboration between life-long friends, and creative partners, Duane Andersen (myself) and Josiah Polhemus.

Kickstarter provides you an opportunity to support this fun project and to receive rewards for your participation. If we do not reach our goal by the deadline, we will not receive anything, and you will not be charged. Please help us reach our goal.
All superhero stories have a genesis, and ours is no different. The genesis of Superpowerless takes place at De Anza Elementary School in Palo Alto, California where I met Josiah in the first grade. As school kids we made Super-8 movies (me as the director, and Josiah as the actor) and dreamed of one day growing up to make real films.
After years of being out of contact we reconnected via the miracle of the internet and discovered that we were both still pursuing our dreams. We then started planning the day when we'd make a real film together, with me as the director and Josiah as the lead actor.
Every day on set Josiah and I would say to each other: If only our ten-year-old-selves could see us now.
We have an amazing group of people together to help finish our film, including Independent Spirit Award Nominee Dave Boyle editing, Sarah Saturday of Gardening, Not Architecture composing our music, and Emmy Award winning sound mixer Carlos Sanches doing our final sound mix.
But we need your help to make it all happen. We need funding for all the expenses related to post, as well as some deferred expenses from production.
Watch Sarah in this cool Gardening Not Architecture music video:
Your contribution will go to make sure that the movie is finished with the professional quality and standard that I've always strived for.
Every donation counts, and I appreciate all your efforts.
We have an awesome cast featuring Josiah and the super talented Amy Prosser, in the leads. Duane and Josiah have known Amy since around junior high school. Over the years she has crafted an impressive resume of great stage performances. We're thrilled that she agreed to make her film debut as Mimi, Bob's girlfriend, who is facing some significant mid-life decisions of her own.
Supporting Josiah and Amy in an ensemble of talented professionals:
Natalie Lander plays Daniell. Natalie is an amazing up-and-coming actress with a recurring role on ABC's The Middle, and is the voice of Kinzie Kensington on the popular video game series Saints Row.
Guinevere Turner plays Marie. In addition to being a talented actor, Guinevere is an accomplished writer and director. She wrote the screenplays for the benchmark indie hit Go Fish, the cult classic American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page. She also wrote for and acted in the popular Showtime series The L Word.
H.P. Mendoza plays Sam. Another multi-talented multi-hyphenate, H.P. is a writer, director, composer, cinematographer, etc, etc. His films include Colma: The Musical, Fruit Fly, Yes, We're Open, Longhorns and the incredible I am a Ghost.
Pepe Serna plays Holst. A legendary character actor, Pepe has appeared in over a hundred films including Scarface, American Me, The Black Dahlia, and Buckaroo Bonzai. He recently starred in Dave Boyle's Spirit Award nominated film Man from Reno, which was the third film he has made with Duane and Dave. Superpowerless is his fourth.
We have a lot of cool rewards including the basics: DVDs, posters, etc; to the more unusual: Songs written for you, your name in a film, and a baseball game with a TV legend.
Digital Level: At our most basic level you receive a digital download of the soundtrack, the movie and the screenplay.
Hard-Copy Level: Get hard copies of the movie, the score, the script and the poster! Plus a T-Shirt designed by our T-Shirt sponsor Riven Athletics. $100 gets you ALL of the Hard copy rewards, plus ALL of the digital rewards.
Limited Edition Level: At this more exclusive level you can receive limited edition music from Gardening, Not Architecture; posters and DVDs signed by the cast; a signed copy of the prop book, Sidekick Triumphant; or get original art from lead actor (and prolific artist) Josiah Polhemus.
The Saint's Row Level: We know there are rabid Saint's Row fans out there. Here's your chance for non-virtual interaction with Kinzie Kensington, voiced by our very own Natalie Lander. Step one of the package includes a photo of Kinzie, hand-signed by Natalie. Step two includes lunch with Natalie herself (chaperoned by myself).
Above and Beyond Level: For your above-and-beyond support we have some great awards set up. Have lunch with the filmmaker and cast (including Natalie Lander or Pepe Serna); have H.P. Mendoza write a song about you; or have Sarah Saturday include you and your loved one in our film's closing song; Are you an aspiring filmmaker? I am a low-budget film guru who has produced a dozen low-budget films, and I will schedule and budget your script and consult on your business plan; Or have a character in my next film named after you.
Hall of Fame Level: This award is one for the record books. Attend a Dodgers game with Duane, Natalie and Natalie's dad, David Lander, better known as Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley. David is a huge baseball fan and worked as a baseball scout for many years. If you're a baseball and TV fan, this one is for you.
Superhero Level: For your outstanding generosity we have outstanding rewards: Receive credit as a Co-Producer, or Executive Producer; Attend the festival premiere and after-party; or we'll come to your house and screen the film for you and your friends a week before the world premiere.
A note about receiving rewards:
Most rewards will be delivered shortly after the first festival premiere of the film. We are anticipating this will happen sometime around January 2016, in a far-flung hope that maybe we're part of Sundance that year. In the likely event that we're not invited to Sundance we will distribute gifts shortly after whatever premiere date is best for the release of the film.

Risks and challenges
The great thing about this project, opposed to other projects on Kickstarter, is we're almost finished. So, there's essentially no risk that we WON'T finish the movie. Whether the film plays at festivals or gets any sort of distribution, however, is always a risk. Most of my films have played at big festivals, including SXSW, Tribeca, Los Angeles Film Festival, AFI, and many others. All of my previous films have also received SOME KIND of distribution. I've also successfully self-distributed films, so I am confident that Superpowerless will get out there, in one way or another.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
