About

WHAT'S RAZED?

RAZED is a board game for 2 - 6 players made almost entirely from wood (not the dice or rulebook!). The opposing sides fight to either destroy the city, piece by piece, or they valiantly try to save it. The city is made of small blocks of wood which form the many buildings. As damage is caused, these blocks are removed and the full extent of the damage is revealed. What's more, I have yet to see any game similar to it.

IT LOOKS KINDA FUNNY

The form is a deliberate choice. Let's start with wood as a medium. Ever since I started making games for my friends and myself, I have used wood. It's tactile and has a nice weight to it. The pieces supplied with RAZED are unpainted and unvarnished so you can personalise them to suit your needs/style/time setting.

The RAZED board
The RAZED board

The round board is made from 3mm birch ply, which complements the aesthetic qualities of the game. It has become the signature of all my games and was meant to represent a slice through a tree trunk. I see my games as part game, part display piece.

As the playing pieces and board in RAZED are HAND-PAINTED, there will be some minor variations in colour and style. To my mind, this just adds character and an element of individuality to every single copy. If you are bothered about perfection, RAZED is probably not the game for you.

THE DAY RAZED WAS BORN

RAZED started off life as a D&D scenario. My unsuspecting adventurers thought the new city they were in was just the starting point for their adventure: boy, did they get a shock! It was actually a few years later, while tidying up a cupboard, that I found some of the notes and I realised that it might just work as a board game. The original suffered from too much detail, but slowly (and sometimes painfully) it emerged into the form on offer today. I must admit that I'm a proud father of this bundle of joy!

RAZED'S LITTLE BROTHER

Meet the 36'ers
Meet the 36'ers

About half a year ago, I met an old friend and we got talking about this project, which was in its early stages. Since I didn't have a copy to hand, I drew a miniature version on a napkin and had a Eureka moment: this was a perfect foil to RAZED. After a few games, we worked out what would be included and what it would look like. To save on cost, the lucky recipients of Meet the 36'ers will be sent a PDF of the rulebook.

Below is a photo showing the relative sizes of the two boards. I consider RAZED to be an ideal society game whereas Meet the 36'ers is the ultimate pub game!

HOW DO THE GOBLINS PLAY?

Originally RAZED took a whole evening to play, which was great when we had a whole evening to play it. The trouble was that wasn't very often. I went back to the drawing board and stripped out a lot of fun but unnecessary rules. RAZED can now be set up and played to a satisfactory conclusion within an hour. Obviously if you are new to the game, it may take a bit longer but most players understand the rules within a few turns. If you read the rulebook, there really shouldn't be any difficulties.

The basic turn is divided into a Movement phase and an Action phase. This allows one side to counteract the other, which I feel mirrors real life situations. There are multiple actions available so tactics do come into play; the variation makes each turn unpredictable.

Dice have been introduced (in a novel way) to determine outcomes. Once again, they work well in deciding the success or failure of a particular action. I've also made it possible for weaker units to overcome better ones: remember, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

YOU'RE SPENDING IT ON WHAT?!

Obviously a large chunk of the money generated through this project will be spent on wood. The boards are being custom cut by a specialist firm, which isn't cheap but gives a quality finish. To reduce some costs, I'll be making the playing pieces myself and hand-painting the boards. Therefore I require some paint, brushes, a new saw and a great deal of sandpaper. The rest will be spent on printing the rulebooks and providing the finishing touches. Money well spent if you ask me!

BUT WHAT ABOUT...?

If there's something else you want to know about RAZED, get in touch. I'm more than willing to answer any questions that you might have. Cheers!

Risks and challenges

Obviously this is my first project on 'Kickstarter' but I have been producing my own games in wood for many years. Therefore I have a reasonable idea of putting together a game that is well-constructed and fully tested.
Most of the work has been done with regards to suppliers. All my suppliers have been provided with artwork and will be ready to start production straightaway. I am currently sourcing back-up suppliers in order to have an emergency contingency plan.
Additionally, I have my own workshop so I can lock myself away from any and all distractions.
I am confident of completing my project as stated.

I will give you my personal copy of RAZED as used in some of the play-testing. It is certified on the back of the board by me, and comes complete with a painted city walls and towers set. All the buildings were also painted by my fair hand. I will also throw in a copy of "Meet the 36'ers", the anGRYforest bags, the special edition d6s and the rulebooks as in the limited edition. There's also your name at the top of the credits in the main rulebook. And if that wasn't enough, I will send you a link to a secret page outlining my next project. Is this the Mother of all Rewards? Well, quite possibly.
