I've been building out of my garage - the woodshop! - for years. Cars don't park in my woodshop.
Today, Mrs M and I do about 30 craft fairs a year under the business name Mrs M's Handmade. She makes small batch lotions, soaps, scrubs & balms, and I make cutting boards, wooden serving pieces, game boards and home decor.
I am working very hard to grow the business. Last year I sold over 800 pieces ... and this year, I'm already running 25% ahead of that. One thing I've found is that so many people love my work when they see it at an event, but I can only be at so many events, especially as the holidays approach. If I could just get people to find me before the holiday crush, I could help a lot more people!
And that's why I'm here. If you're looking for a gift for that special someone - or simply want better tools in your kitchen - then I will appreciate your support.
To advance the business, I am hoping to purchase a couple of new tools, and if this campaign is wildly successful, I plan to lease a new workspace.
But first, the work has to get done. A couple of tools would help me do better work. My table saw is under powered (the previous motor only lasted for 12 years of service); it's not made to cut 2" thick hardwoods. You know, like I do almost every day! Also, a bench top oscillating sander would help me smooth concave curves, which are currently a challenge with existing tools.
I will be more efficient in a larger workspace that has a space for finishing (currently this is done just about everywhere I can put a table) as well as storage. With a bit more than my current 350 square feet of shop space, I could be more productive.
We finally rented a storage space this year so that I could stop having wood cascades: when a pile of special wood that I'm saving slides free from it's storage space and begins to flow across the shop. It's all too common; I was having wood cascades daily.
With a successful Kickstarter campaign, I will solve these 2 problems while creating heirloom quality cutting boards & serving pieces for my backers.
To see the woods I use, here's a link to a webpage on my blog site, MowryJournal.com, that identifies & describes the woods on various pieces I've made over the years.
For care instructions for your board, here's a link on the same site that tells you what to do.
All pieces will ship with a card that identifies the woods used in the piece. Care instructions will be on that same card.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Now, can I get to work for you?
Risks and challenges
It's just me in the shop. All work is planned to be as efficient as possible. I am the one ordering the lumber, cutting the boards, assembling each piece, shaping it, sanding it, and hand rubbing it when it crosses the finish line. As long as I stay in the shop, all will be well!
I've thought through the deadlines for the project and limited the number of rewards that can be purchased to ensure all work will be done in a timely fashion: before the 2018 holiday season.
Living in the Los Angeles area, I have multiple sources for the exotic hardwoods I use.
I will have the materials. I will have the time. Now, I just need your support!
Once your board is delivered, it's backed by my lifetime guarantee. If the board ever has a problem, in my lifetime, I will fix it or replace it.
