About

The Series

When the young and hopeful Dylan Bishop is down on her luck, she finds herself unexpectedly moving into a building of misfits and ultimately, finding a home.

Dylan is not having a good day. Upon moving to Toronto to pursue her dream of becoming a screenwriter, she unceremoniously has the job and apartment she has lined up yanked out from under her. Looking to her best friend Nickie for help, Nickie points her in the direction of an eccentric older woman that lives in the same building who currently seeks roommate. Settling in a new home and restarting her job search, Dylan learns to embrace her new life in all it’s uniqueness.

As the series hangs on story and character, The Building succeeds in offering a voice that is rarely seen in media today, that of a young, complex woman of colour. Both the show’s star and creator are black women eager to explore the stories of women often neglected in media; from old to young, straight to gay, black to white. We are able to offer a fresh perspective and shed the oft used tropes and stereotypes of ethnic depictions, all while having fun and entertaining our audience.

All the scripts have been written, the roles casted, the crew prepared. We just need you to help us make it happen.

The Plan

This original comedy series consists of nine episodes offered on Vimeo on Demand. However, this minimum budget covers the cost of shooting and completing the first four episodes only. And it's a bare bones shoot that covers equipment costs, location fees, minimal art direction and craft services. With more money we could shoot all nine episodes, increase the art budget so what you see on screen really comes alive, and of course, actually pay our cast and crew. They work hard, and they deserve to be compensated. In addition, with enough money we would be able to offer the additional materials, such as weekly interactive vlogs from protagonist Dylan.

But that's mostly a far off hope. The most important thing to us is that we get this story out there, but raising more funds means we can give you the best product available. As of now, our locations are split up amongst multiple different buildings. A larger budget would also allow us to find locations in the same apartment building, so give you that added bit of authenticity, and make everyone's life easier. A happy cast and crew is a successful cast and crew.

The Team

Creator Lu Asfaha and Star Samantha Cole

Lu Asfaha - Creator/Writer/Editor

Lu has been devoted to increasing diverse media representation for many years. Having rarely scene positive portrayals that looked like herself, or those around her, when growing up, she felt this was and still is a failing of popular media. So, sick of the common portrayals of hyper sexual best friends and selfless caretakers that black women often embody on the screen, she sought out to create a show that subverted those stories and delivered laughs at the same time. She recently picture edited the short LGBT film Something Like This, as well as writing and directing the dark comedy Dead End.

Yusuf Alvi - Producer

Yusuf is a Toronto based Producer and Production Manager known for producing the independent Canadian feature "Reign" (2015). Previously he has worked on such short films as Little Dougie (2015) Thank You Roman Stince (2014) & Camper's Conundrum (2013). He is a graduate of Film and Television Production at Humber College and has a strong passion for creating and crafting strong stories and narratives.

Risks and challenges

Once the project is successfully funded, we will begin preparing for principal photography, and a lot of things can go wrong on set. Equipment can malfunction, cast can show up late, or not at all, an unexpected storm can wash us all into the lake. But we're indie filmmakers, with years of experience running safe, low budget sets, and always get the picture.

If equipment malfunctions, we get replacements, or make do with what we have. If cast come to set late, crew members stand in and we push back their shots until they can be in them. If they don't show up at all, we quickly recast. Hopefully no one will get washed into the lake. In this business you assume that everything will go wrong, and come up with a Plan B. And C through L.
