We’ve hit our goal of $5,000. After just 8 days, we’ve managed to make D4RT in Yantaló real. A massive, glowing thank you to everyone who contributed, blogged, tweeted and liked!
This means I’ll spend the next three weeks researching, compiling shopping lists, finding the best way to get art supplies to Yantaló and conceptualizing the mural I’ll create with my class. I’d love to add “planning the future of D4RT” to this list. Here is how it would break down:
- $13,000: D4RT lands in a Cambodian orphanage in the summer of 2012.
- $20,000: one more D4RT 2012 installment is funded. Ideally, this will be a second visit to Yantaló to continue work on establishing a permanent art program there.
- And so on. The more we raise now, the bigger and better this becomes. When I think about how vast D4RT can be and the kind of difference it can make, I get actual chills. Networks, corporate supply donations, large-scale public art pieces and permanent art programs taking root. It could happen, and will, with your support.

What is D4RT?
D4RT is a mobile art class that aims to bring workshops and public art projects to impoverished communities all over the world, with its first installment to take place in September of 2011 in Yantaló, Peru.
Yantaló is a village in the Peruvian Amazon jungle with a population of less than 3,000 people. Seemingly untouched by the modern world, the community survives in an destitute state. In this area, an education is a commodity. Some children travel up to 10 miles a day by canoe and dirt roads just to make it to school. Thanks to the Yantaló Peru Foundation, improvements are being made in health and education, but, even with these improvements, hot water and electricity are scarce and, for now, there is just one small, government-run school in Yantaló. There isn't a single art program available.
Coordinating with Luis Vasquez, the President of the Yantaló Peru Foundation, I want to bring D4RT to Yantaló and teach a 5-day kids' workshop in everything from understanding materials to an introduction to portraiture. I'm crafting a fantasy-based lesson plan that will allow total creative freedom, while instilling basic principles of representation. For the first three days, we will explore our tools and work on small exercise projects. The remaining time will be spent working on a special final assignment: we'll work together to create a mural celebrating the imagination. Because there are no art stores anywhere near Yantaló, I will provide every student in my group with an art supply kit.
Additionally, I'll photograph my students and the art they create, as well as document the entire D4RT Yantaló experience to create a postcard set and, possibly, a book. It is my hope that D4RT will invigorate the kids' left brain hemispheres, encourage them to think creatively every day, and plant the seeds of a future, permanent art program in Yantaló.
Why should you contribute?
As someone who has been through a kaleidoscope of art classes in her lifetime, I know what it takes to engage kids' interests and imaginations and can offer a fun, unique perspective on the subject of art. I've taken every necessary step to make D4RT real and need your help to take the final crucial steps. The money raised with Kickstarter allow me to develop a comprehensive lesson plan, pay for mural supplies and extensive art kits for each of my students, and get me to the Peruvian jungle alive.
What happens if I raise more than my goal?
If we raise slightly over $5,000, the proceeds will go to improving the quality of art supply kits I bring to Yantaló. If we raise significantly more than my goal, the proceeds will go to fund future D4RT installments all over the world, as well as a D4RT coffee table book.
Yes, but I'll be working with representatives of every town D4RT visits to coordinate class locations, attendees and public art spaces.
To me, "Dart" signifies adventure and fun - the foundation of this project. I added number 4 to the name to make it a little more searchable on and offline.
