About this project
What is this documentary about?
Traveling thousands of miles and hours spent in a train going through India isn't only to reconnect with my mother. My intent for this film is to inspire children to learn from the struggles and hardships they've been dealt and to take charge and create their own futures and plan their own path. Rather than staying on the ones previously given. What you will find in this documentary is the story of my childhood, abandoned by my mother, abused by my father and taken into the foster care system. Then, during the following years through the hardships in many different foster homes, the desire within me grew to do not only what I loved but also what was most important to me. In this film, you will see my story and the journey to reconnect with my mother in India after being separated for 19 years. The journey will be documented with a very talented group of filmmakers and through the lens of my camera. I'm very anxious to get this Documentary piece completed and with your help I know we can make this happen.
How many children are in foster care?
Nationwide, more than 463,000 children live in foster care. In California, which has the largest foster care population than any other state, the number of foster youth has tripled in the last 20 years (Source: AFCARS Report 2009).
Why are these children placed in foster care?
Children enter foster care for several reasons:
- 18.8% Physical Abuse
- 7.9% Emotional abuse
- 6.2% Sexual Abuse
- 3.2% Caretaker Inability

What happens to foster youth who emancipate (age-out) from the system?
- 65% emancipate without a place to live
- Less than 3% go to college
- 51% are unemployed
- Emancipated females are 4 times more likely to receive public assistance than the general population
- In any given year, foster children compromise less than 0.3% of the state's population, and yet 40% of persons living in homeless shelters are former foster children. A similarly disproportionate percentage of the nation's prison population is comprised of former foster youth.

What's the goal of this documentary?
People have already made documentaries about how they think the foster care system is bad. But that’s not the story we’re trying to tell. The goal of this documentary is not to just to tell one person's story, but to shine a light on the foster care system and give hope to the kids currently in it. We want to show foster care kids that they can make it through.

Risks and challenges
With all the images I will be photographing in the making of this film, it will be a challenge to selectively choose the images that will be used for the rewards being that I will be photographing thousands of images. However I do plan on allocating hours towards image selection and processing of the photos.
We are looking at a couple editors for the footage once its been filmed and its a risk to go with an editor that doesn't have much experience so it's very important that the funds are there to back a phenomenal editor to piece together the film.
Traveling thousands of miles with camera gear increases your chance of damaging camera equipment and the whole point of this project is to create a film with the essential tools. If we are funded the full amount we have the right resources i.e. backup systems etc.
With your support, I know we can make this happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
