DEATH COMES IN RED.
EVERY STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED! WHAT'S NEXT?
Thanks to the unbelievable support of our backers we were able to fully fund and reach our first Stretch Goal in under 48 hours! Thanks so much :D
We've also reached every Stretch Goal we had planned at the beginning of this campaign, so what now?
This is a pretty hefty upgrade that will surely add some major collectible value to issue #3! We aim to cater every backer by upgrading the regular cover to a gorgeous Chromium Collectible cover!
On top of that, every backer pledging for at any print tier will be getting already:
- A fine Mini-Print by Rafael Vasconcelos Leite
- Collectible "Gold Signature Series" card by Hector ElSevilla Lujan
- A second collectible "Gold Signature" card by Kael Ngu
- 8 extra pages added to the book featuring artwork by Ryan Ottley, Mirka Andolfo, Gabriel Piccolo, Mirka Andolfo & more!
- The third collectible CROW magnet that will make up a flock of crows on your fridge
- The ashcan edition of the comic in print
She has no name, no home, and no family, just a title: Curse Chaser. Water on the planet has been gone for seventy years and mankind has been reduced to a handful few perpetually living in hell.
And no hell is complete without its demons.
People will do anything to survive. When their lives, their children’s lives, when their world have no chance and that old and forgotten evil curse seems pretty reasonable, it’s just that much easier to strike a bargain with the Devil.
But not under her watch.
The Few and Cursed is a post-apocalyptic western set in an alternate 1910 where monsters and the supernatural roam the wasteland that is now Earth. Going from town to town, crossing oceans in horseback, the Redhead is the only one possible of balancing the scale.
THE CROWS OF MANA’OLANA
The Few and Cursed - Crows of Mana’Olana is a six-part comic series by Felipe Cagno (that would be me :D) and Fabiano Neves, with colors by Dinei Ribeiro and lettering by Deyvison Manes.
This campaign is to raise funds to print ISSUE #3 and perhaps some Stretch Goals along the way to allow us to deliver even more goodies than our first two bouts here on Kickstarter.
If you are hearing about this for the very first time (welcome!!) and want to get back issues as well, we have some nifty combos and early birds for you or even individual tiers. Make sure to scroll down to pick whatever tier attends your needs best.
A quick synopsis for newcomers:
The Crows of Mana’Olana is an old Hawaiian bedtime story parents used to tell their children about gigantic Crows that come in the cold night to snatch them off their beds if they didn’t behave.
Issue #1 introduced the Redhead to readers as we got to see her chase a local Indian myth, the Tsilkali, a giant snake preying on the small town of Mountain Ville, California.
In Issue #2 we follow the Redhead to the border of San Andreas and see her first meeting with a 94-year old survivor of The Reaping, Jebediah Younger. They team up to cross the Pacific after the Crows of Mana’Olana and we get to see how real they really are… and how dangerous.
In this next installment of the series, Issue #3, the Redhead and Jebediah finally make it to Mana’Olana and in a flashback readers will experience firsthand what the Redhead is truly capable of.
Below are some sample pages from issues #1 and #2 and an exclusive WIP sneak peek at the first pages of issues #3. The script is 100% complete and Fabiano is already working on the art.
- Part 3 of 6 - The Crows of Mana'Olana
- Standard comic book format: 6'625" x 10'25"
- 24 full colored pages
- Regular cover by DC Comics EDDY BARROWS & IVAN NUNES
- Incentive variant cover by JOE PRADO
- Kickstarter variant cover by FELIPE MASSAFERA
Production on issue #3 has started already and we expect to start shipping out the rewards about sixteen weeks after the end of this Kickstarter campaign. That should put us in late September although I’d love to get this out a couple of weeks before.
We estimate a production time of about six weeks and as we print our books in Taiwan, that process usually takes another eight weeks from approval to customs and delivery. A couple of weeks to sign and pack everything and we should be good to go.
Variant covers give us an opportunity to showcase and collaborate with artists we admire and that can give our character a different spin. For issue #3 we are very honored to be working with three outstanding artists.
Joe Prado and an yet to be announced top colorist will take art duties for a gorgeous portrait like the example below.
Felipe Massafera has a phenomenal track record when it comes to covers and the artwork below reflects what to expect from him.
It’s become a tradition already to include a gallery of pin-ups done by some of the top artists working in comics today. It’s always our first stretch goal in every campaign and here’s hoping we get to keep the tradition going on issue #3.
These were just a few of the pin-ups we had for previous issues.
One of the coolest stretch goals we reached in our last campaign was the manufacturing of two collectible and high-end cards featuring brand new art. Already looking to keep this going the two cards below were only the first of a set of nine and the plan is to get two more done this time around.
These are available as Add-Ons regardless of the tier you pick. So if you missed out any of our Kickstarter campaigns last year you can always complete the set. More info below in the Rewards section!
FELIPE CAGNO - Writer
I'm 33 years old and I have been working pretty much exclusively with comics since 2013. I have a background in filmmaking, got my Master's degree at Chapman University and wrote and directed my first feature-length film in 2012, A Bullet With No Name.
My first comic book series was The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand epic adventure. It was an adaptation of a feature screenplay I wrote while at Chapman and working at producing companies like Arad Pictures, Weed Road and Misher Films.
Trying a different approach to comics, I came up with the short narrative challenge "321": comic book stories with 3 pages, 2 characters and 1 twist ending. The 321: Fast Comics (both volumes available right here as part of rewards packages or add-ons) series was Kickstarted right here last year, and featured stories from every genre you can think of with a myriad of top-name artists attached to them.
On top of The Few and Cursed I also have another creator-owned series in the works, Classified, a spy thriller. Earlier this year I completed two original graphic novels. Too Good to Be True (recently kickstarted) is a dramedy about a wannabe comic book artist that meets his inspirational Hollywood crush.
Choices: A Hero's Tale is a graphic novel about a young guy that wants to be the world's first real superhero. It's inspired by the comics from the 50s and 60s when superheroes were just fun.
Recently I also got the opportunity of writing a Planet of the Apes short story for comic book app Madefire and Fox.
FABIANO NEVES - Artist
Professionally working as an artist since he was nineteen years old, Fabiano was first published in the US in 2000 with Xena Warrior Princess. He then went on to work for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Dynamite among other publishers.
A talented colorist as well, Fabiano has done both interior pages and covers for Xena, Marvel Zombies, Red Sonja, Robocop, JLA’s Vibe and Constantine among many other titles. The Few and Cursed represents Fabiano’s first creator-owned project.
DINEI RIBEIRO - Colorist
Dinei has been working with illustration since 2007 for advertising companies until he decided to try his luck in comics through his own studio.
The gamble paid off as Dinei has a number of titles in his resume for companies like Dynamite, Zenescope and Legendary Comics, and most recently DC Comics.
His credits include interior pages and covers for “Red Sonja”, “Vampirella”, “Green Hornet”, ”John Carter & Dejah Thoris” and he’s been working with artist Ed Benes for DC Comics and in their creator-owned sexy thriller “Nina & Ariel”.
STRETCH GOALS UNLOCKED!
Thanks to the immense support we got in our previous two campaigns we were able to offer some pretty cool extras.
I already mentioned the collectible cards with exclusively commissioned art for them, we also managed to deliver a variant Ashcan Black & White edition in print of the whole book, that’s two comics for the price of one, the also aforementioned pin-up gallery, a pair of crow fridge magnets that hopefully will complete a set, post-card, mini-prints and I could go on and on.
Here’s hoping we continue reaching these stretch goals together! Who’s with me?!
Lots of cool stuff to look for including the two collectible cards and my personal favorite: both 321: Fast Comics books as part of reward packages or as an add-on. Interesting to know the Redhead's first appearance was on 321: Fast Comics Vol. 1!
The 321: Fast Comics is a comic book anthology series published last year with two volumes right here on Kickstarter with some of today's biggest comic book names taking up the challenge of producing short stories with:
1 Twist Ending
Some of the artists in the series include Ivan Reis, Alex Sinclair, RB Silva, Joe Prado, Andrew Dalhouse, Cris Peter, Marcelo Maiolo, Rod Reis, Israel Silva and many more! You can check some of our reviews below:
"Just jam-packed with so many pages of good comics." -- Ain't It Cool News
"4.5 out of 5 stars!" -- comicbooked.com
"Brims with talented artists and with a neat premise..." -- The Spire
"The Short Story Perfected!"- The Pullbox.com
"It’s a high concept idea that gets knocked out of the park." -- The Outhousers
Fabiano's art book is also available as an add-on much like any of his original sketches or commissions.
A few things to keep in mind:
*Most reward tiers include FREE SHIPPING to US (international shipping is available at a cost)
*Every reward tier includes YOUR name in our "Thank You" section (regardless of the tier you pick, we are very grateful to have you joining us on this quest!)
*Also included in every tier is a digital copy of The Few and Cursed #1, #2 and #3 (downloadable PDF) unless otherwise noted. For instance if you choose to get only issue #1 in print then you'd only get that digital copy.
How do Add-Ons work?
- Add up the total of your selections (plus shipping if it applies)
- Click "Manage Your Pledge" in the upper right corner (blue button)
- Add the total of your Add Ons to your pledge amount. You don't need to change the tier you've selected
- You are done! Later you'll get a backer survey asking how you spent your add-on dollars.
- Thank you!

*Important notice: Due to high volume of art books with sketches on them sold in our first campaign we are not able to offer these again. Fabiano did his best to accommodate everyone's sketch request but it ultimately delayed delivery and production of our next issue. Sorry, guys!
Commissions are still available upon request though. E-mail me at email@example.com or send me an inbox message right here on Kickstarter.
Fabiano and I are all about 100% transparency and we believe you deserve to know where your money is going to.
All of the money raised by Kickstarter will be used towards three things: Printing, Shipping and Fees.
Here’s a breakdown of our costs:
- Printing - $2,332.27
- Shipping - $2,500.00 (rough estimate based on my last KS)
- Shipping supplies - $300
- Production - $1,130.00 - Fees (10% Kickstarter) - $600.00
Total - $6,862.27
Any additional funding over our goal will first cover whatever is left from the above and all the extras like collectible cards, pin-ups, magnets, etc.
Once all the costs have been taken care of whatever is left will be used towards production of future issues.
I'm also substantially raising our shipping supplies budget to give our Shipping process yet another upgrade.
We already pack and mail our rewards using hard cardboard photo mailers plus dust-free clear plastic bags and I'm also looking to give this a boost with cardboards inside the package as well.
For tiers that include 321: Fast Comics books, Fabiano Neves Art Book and/or commissions, bubble mailers will be used sandwiched by cardboards.
Our primary goal is to entertain you and release the series entirely through Kickstarter. It all starts with YOU and YOUR support so thanks so much for sticking with us :D
Risks and challenges
This will be my 6th Kickstarter project, 15th crowdfunding campaign if you count my experience with a similar platform in Brazil, and by now I can say I have a pretty good handle of what to expect prior, during and after a lengthy campaign.
I love crowdfunding, it's an excellent opportunity to get in direct touch with readers and fans. If you have any criticism, feedback or question, I'm always around to open a dialogue with you whether it's through Kickstarter's Message system or email at firstname.lastname@example.org
My biggest challenge is always shipping. I'm always looking for ways to make your packages arrive as safely as possible and in a timely manner. It's not easy... I've actually made friends with my local post-office dealing with such a difficult logistic but I feel I've made improvements and there is always room for growth.
For this campaign I plan on streamlining the logistics for some of our higher-end reward tiers, especially those including original artwork since those are not dependent upon myself only.
As I mentioned before production on issue 3 is already on the way and I expect to ship everything about 16 weeks after the campaign ends. I use Kraken Printing for my printing needs and they print and ship the books from Taiwan so that process takes about 10 weeks. The extra time is for production and then for signing everything, packing and then going to the post-office for a few days.
All in all I'm glad you are here and thanks so much for backing!
