"When I’m at my desk, it’s really easy to pair program and be very productive with two screens. When using DuoScreen, I find that it’s just as easy to be productive and continue pair programming on the go."
-Colin Dean, Advisory Software Engineer
“It’s great for getting work done because I can have my textbook open on one screen while I have my problem set open on the other and I can get my work done very quickly.”
-Alex K., CMU Master's Student in Engineering
“When I'm playing World of Warcraft or League of Legends, a second screen is super handy. I use it for referencing information or separate communication while gaming, and I'm really glad DuoScreen will allow me the option to bring my second screen anywhere I want to game.”
-Tannis Kapell, Longtime Gamer
Around the turn of the millennium, the use of two screens for a single desktop computer began to popularize -- and for good reason. Increasing screen space increases the amount of content you can keep at your fingertips. Having two screens allows you to organize more content, saves time, clicks, and keystrokes when switching between programs, and improves multi-tasking.
The use of laptops also skyrocketed. Instead of travelling to our computers, we were now taking them with us for both work and play. Despite the rise of both these technology trends, there has not been a technological innovation to make second screens as mobile as the modern laptop.
This problem plagued Nick Greco. He had often used dual monitors, especially in his work as a software developer. However, he also liked working away from his office desk environment. He needed to find a way to bring a second screen to use with his laptop when he didn't feel like working at his office desk.
Then, he met Ben Matzke, who faced the same dilemma. Together, they conceived of a solution: building a second screen into a laptop dock.
Taking this idea and running with it, they applied and were accepted to Pittsburgh's Thrill Mill startup incubator, beating out dozens of other new companies in the process. Not soon after, the first prototype of the DuoScreen was constructed. That DuoScreen was fully functional and slim enough to not be a burden to carry easily. It effectively solved the problem they sought to fix.
Nick and Ben weren't satisfied. They were happy they built a solution to their problem, but they wanted it to be cooler, sleeker, edgier. After months of work developing this first DuoScreen, they decided their practical solution needed an upgrade.
Enter Jacob Howell, a veteran industrial designer who helped redesign DuoScreen into the product we have brought to Kickstarter. His expertise in product development helped make the DuoScreen appeal to a larger market, reflect the brand identity of Nomadz, and brought the initial vision of the DuoScreen to life. His seamless entrance has lifted the entire operation to another level.
Nomadz Inc. wants to find solutions to increase the efficiency, convenience, gratification of mobile computing. We see a world where all computer stations become mobile, and we have a passion for building technology to meet this evolution.
The DuoScreen is embodiment of this combined vision of Nick Greco, Ben Matzke, and Jacob Howell. DuoScreen has come a long way since the early days, and we now have a product that not only lets you bring a second screen with your laptop, but also is the coolest looking piece of hardware you own.
Risks and challenges
As we jump head-first into Kickstarter, we see three major challenges that we are prepared to overcome:
1.) Refine the final design — While we were pleased with the prototype, we still feel there is some room for improvement. We're still testing different rails, hinges, and straps to provide you with the very best version of DuoScreen.
2.) Making the DuoScreen affordable — One of the challenges we've encountered is finding the optimal balance of number of units manufactured, initial capital required, and the unit price.
Our $100,000 fundraising goal will let us produce the smallest number of units at the price we want—but leaves us a razor slim margin for error. Anticipating this challenge, we've had extensive discussions with manufacturers to make sure we can produce the initial batch the affordable prices available on our Kickstarter.
3.) We're a young company — Nomadz is a new company, and we're using Kickstarter as a launchpad to hit the ground running. While we face natural challenges of being first-timers, we still look at it as an advantage. Older companies have multiple projects that divide their attention, we have a singular focus on the DuoScreen Kickstarter, and this one mission is our top priority.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
