ALL OUT WAR is officially having its world premiere at NXNE in Toronto!!! This is a super big deal and we are so thankful to everyone that has supported the film, you have made this a reality! In preparing for this we have been working around the clock to finish the film in time and the film will premiere!
This in no way means that we no longer have a need for the Kickstarter funds, perhaps even the opposite. More film festival applications plus marketing and publicity costs are way over our head right now. And as our campaign promises, more funds will help us create more custom music for the soundtrack. It never ends, and we need your help more than ever. So throw us a bone and share the campaign! And we hopefully we will see you at more festivals all over the world!
KNOW THE LEDGE
Somewhere in the world right now, two people are using every ounce of their strength, passion and creativity to destroy each other in combat. This ritual can be witnessed in any city from N.Y. to Shanghai. It’s called battling, and it’s the main pillar of one of modern history’s most explosive subcultures: b-boying.
B-boying, or breakdancing, is a style of street dance that was born in the 70’s on the pavement of forgotten neighborhoods. Initially viewed as a fad, 40 years of progression have proven that breaking is here to stay. Today, this urban art form has a world-wide presence and grows in scale and influence every day.
Filmed in a fresh, unique style, All Out War is a feature length documentary that follows four b-boys from different positions on the breaking spectrum. The stories of Machine, Alien Ness, Dyzee and Casper intersect at one of b-boying’s most prestigious competitions: The King of the Ring.
All Out War has been a passion project of mine for years now. Growing up in the 80’s, breaking was the thing to do. It was no longer an underground tribal dance that was done in house parties in The Bronx, but had quickly gone commercial and spread worldwide. After the next craze came along and the spotlight shifted from b-boying, I always wondered what had happened to the dancers and crews of that era.
As I began research I tried to find different documentaries on the topic. I only managed to locate one film that gave great insight into the history of breakdancing culture, but I longed to know what it is really like to be a b-boy or b-girl. Not being a dancer myself, I could only imagine battling in a raw cypher or in front of thousands of people at a big competition across the globe. Following these individuals on the battle trail reveals what it truly means to be a b-boy.
This sets All Out War apart from a growing list of breaking films. Traditionally, a breakdancing movie highlights the progression of the art form. But these days, b-boy progression is more accurately documented by YouTube than DVDs. So, instead of simply focusing on the war, this film equally devotes itself to the warrior. This leads to the discovery of new truths about breaking and what it takes to be the best b-boy in the world.
This film is a raw exploration into one of our generation’s most incredible creations. These four stories will enlighten and inspire everyone, from b-boy legends to those who still don’t quite understand what a b-boy is. In the end, it turns out that this revolution will be televised, and the result is All Out War.
CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME:
Halfway through production we maxed out our budget, and since then I have had to pay out of pocket in order to try and finish the film. Realistically I cannot get the film where I want it to be on my own. We have set up this Kickstarter campaign for two reasons:
1 - Fund the final finishing costs so that it sees the light of day.
2 - Get you hyped so that the film doesn't go unwatched!
We really value every contribution and will make every dollar stretch as far as we can. However, it is not just monetary support we are looking for. There has been a lot of interest in this project over the last ten years, but that is a long time to hold people's interest. We want you to know the film is ALMOST done! This campaign is an open call for your support. Wear a T-shirt! Tweet about it! Post it on Facebook! Tell your friends! ALL OUR WAR is coming!
We need to raise at least $14,000. This will cover simple finishing costs, including colour correcting and the sound mix. Most of this post-production work keeps getting put on hold due to budget constraints, and your contribution will go directly to the making of the final cut - and on a reasonable time line. With your help the film will be ready for screening this June!
Our stretch goal of $20,000 will provide us with the funds to create custom music and sound design - crucial for a dance film. We originally cut the film with some great tracks but unfortunately the high costs of licensing them would run ten times our production budget. Any additional funds we raise will go to hiring independent musicians, producers and renting studio space so that we can create a soundtrack that rocks.
The "In-Our-Dreams" goal of $50,000 would really change the game. All Out War has the potential to live on after its debut and we want to make the project bigger! Since the King of the Ring in Toronto, there has not been a dance competition to match it in scale and intensity. We want to host another one-on-one battle featuring thirty-four of the top b-boys and b-girls from all over North America. We have most of the resources we need to do this, we are just missing the cash-flow. This war isn’t over yet, and with your help we’ll keep on fighting the good fight.
LOVE & SUPPORT:
We’ve had some amazing support along our journey from local grant agencies like The Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, along with Redbull Canada. We’ve also had strong support from some of Hip Hop’s pioneers and have interviewed some of the greats - members of The Cold Crush Brothers, DJ Disco Wiz, photographer Joe Conzo and Kurtis Blow, have all shown us lots of love. We can't wait for you to join our team of amazing supporters!
Enough about us - what are you gonna get out of this?! Check out some of the amazing prizes designed by our good friends at Rouse & Fable!
I've literally poured blood, sweat and a lot of tears into the making of All Out War and I would have never gotten it to where it is today if it wasn't for the help and support of some amazing people. Thank you for taking the time to check out our Kickstarter. It has taken a long time to get to this point, and we can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. This is our final battle cry to get the film made and out into the world.
Thank you for your support, hopefully we’ll be seeing you in theatres soon!
Love and respect,
Risks and challenges
We’ve encountered numerous challenges and obstacles already. Everything you can imagine from lost luggage at the airport, car accidents, stolen equipment and even being black listed from entering the US. I’ve literally mortgaged my house to try and finish the film, yet it still not enough.
After ten long years, my biggest fear is that all the amazing footage we've captured will go unseen. We have been around the b-boy scene for a while now, and I know people are itching to see the finished product - and I can’t wait to get the film out into the world! Pledging $1 to this campaign means as much to me as $100.
We plan to have the film DVD ready by September, which is a realistic goal that we are on track to meet. All the prizes we have designed will be printed and ready for shipping shortly after the campaign ends. This is an exciting last step, and we are glad to be two-stepping with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
